| Abstrak | : | There are several themes and stages in the history of the United States (US) and Indonesia relations since the Cold War. Many would suggest that US foreign policy would change following the shift in the administration from Liberals to Conservatives or vice versa. Using the case of US-Indonesia relations in the Cold War era and post-9/11 period, specifically the Kennedy and the Bush Jr. Era, this article attempts to show that there is an element of continuity in US foreign policy. To counter communism and terrorism in these two different historical periods, grand ideas such as Modernization Theory guided how the US utilized its grand strategy to engage Indonesia. The two periods serve as a lesson of how the US has in the past attempt to influence the political outcome of developing nations like Indonesia. |

| Abstrak | : | This paper analyses the experiences, challenges, and opportunities for Indonesia's foreign policy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, it examines Indonesia's attempt to expand its diplomatic engagement in the Sub-Saharan Africa region under President Joko Widodo. Despite the perceived uncertainty in the political stability and security of the Sub-Saharan Africa region, Indonesia continues to seek enhancement of diplomatic relations there. Several factors influencing the decision include the perceived Indonesian modality of having a "historical linkage" with the region and the big potential of business opportunities for Indonesian brands and firms. We argue that despite being smaller in scale than other Indo-Pacific powers' growing influence and presence, Indonesia's presence in Sub-Saharan Africa could still capitalise on these modalities and benefit from a more consistent engagement based on several possible niches. |

| Abstrak | : | Data wrangling is a critical foundation of data science, and wrangling of categorical data is an important component of this process. However, categorical data can introduce unique issues in data wrangling, particularly in real-world settings with collaborators and periodically-updated dynamic data. This article discusses common problems arising from categorical variable transformations in R, demonstrates the use of factors, and suggests approaches to address data wrangling challenges. For each problem, we present at least two strategies for management, one in base R and the other from the “tidyverse.” We consider several motivating examples, suggest defensive coding strategies, and outline principles for data wrangling to help ensure data quality and sound analysis. | Abstrak | : | The sheer magnitude of the forced displacement during the Indonesia and East Timor political conflict in 1999 and its aftermath defies easy problematization. As it was euphemistically portrayed, the spectre of displacement cries out for a profound as much as an analytical response, significantly when the pro-integration ex-militias were displaced in West Timor. The trajectories discuss the mobilization of the ex-militias in West Timor in exercising their attempts to build upon their economic, political, and cultural modalities amidst the challenges they faced to survive. Studies of post-war transitions have yet to investigate the critical consequences of the ex-militias movement for the socio-economic and political development of their respective society and how they negotiate their lives with locals after the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) phase took place. A noteworthy finding of this study is the emergence of complex dimensions within the post-war trajectories of ex-militias, challenging the simplistic narratives often shaped by state-led policies. These complexities underscore the need for nuanced policy considerations to address the multifaceted challenges and opportunities ex-militias face in their post-conflict lives. |

| Abstrak | : | “Data science” is a useful catchword for methods and concepts original to the field of statistics, but typically being applied to large, multivariate, observational records. Such datasets call for techniques not often part of an introduction to statistics: modeling, consideration of covariates, sophisticated visualization, and causal reasoning. This article re-imagines introductory statistics as an introduction to data science and proposes a sequence of 10 blocks that together compose a suitable course for extracting information from contemporary data. Recent extensions to the mosaic packages for R together with tools from the “tidyverse” provide a concise and readable notation for wrangling, visualization, model-building, and model interpretation: the fundamental computational tasks of data science. |

| Abstrak | : | Notwithstanding the tangible consequences of climate change and the potential exacerbation of circumstances, there is a prevalent perspective that regards climate change as the key environmental obstacle to forthcoming economic development. This article examines the nuanced relationship between climate change and economic growth, with a specific emphasis on the Indonesian context. The inquiry extends beyond a simplistic binary choice, seeking to unravel the intricacies inherent in the interplay between these two critical phenomena. The foundational concept of decoupling climate and economic growth, supported by the just transition concept, is leveraged to frame the analysis and discussion. Emphasizing the imperative of adopting alternative perspectives and a more holistic approach, the discourse underscores the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted relationship between climate change and economic growth. This paper highlights that the framework for climate change and economic growth should not be perceived as mutually exclusive, and climate actions should rather be seen as an investment in the future. In light of the prevailing situation, addressing climate change is not an optional course of action, thereby necessitating a departure from the current status quo. Against the backdrop of Indonesia's impending government transition in 2024, the article provides policy implications for future governments. |

| Abstrak | : | Computers are a central tool in the research process, enabling complex and large-scale data analysis. As computer-based research has increased in complexity, so have the challenges of ensuring that this research is reproducible. To address this challenge, we review the concept of the research compendium as a solution for providing a standard and easily recognizable way for organizing the digital materials of a research project to enable other researchers to inspect, reproduce, and extend the research. We investigate how the structure and tooling of software packages of the R programming language are being used to produce research compendia in a variety of disciplines. We also describe how software engineering tools and services are being used by researchers to streamline working with research compendia. Using real-world examples, we show how researchers can improve the reproducibility of their work using research compendia based on R packages and related tools. |
Modeling Offensive Player Movement in Professional Basketball

| Abstrak | : | The 2013 arrival of SportVU player tracking data in all NBA arenas introduced an overwhelming amount of on-court information—information which the league is still learning how to maximize for insights into player performance and basketball strategy. The data contain the spatial coordinates for the ball and every player on the court for 25 frames per second, which opens up avenues of player and team performance analysis that was not possible before this technology existed. This article serves as a step-by-step guide for how to leverage a data feed from SportVU for one NBA game into visualizable components that can model any player's movement on offense. We detail some utility functions that are helpful for manipulating SportVU data before applying it to the task of visualizing player offensive movement. We conclude with visualizations of the resulting output for one NBA game, as well as what the results look like aggregated across an entire season for three NBA stars with very different offensive tendencies. |

| Abstrak | : | Many current and future data scientists will be “isolated”—working alone or in small teams within a larger organization. This isolation brings certain challenges as well as freedoms. Drawing on my considerable experience both working in the professional sports industry and teaching in academia, I discuss troubled waters likely to be encountered by newly minted data scientists and offer advice about how to navigate them. Neither the issues raised nor the advice given are particular to sports and should be applicable to a wide range of knowledge domains. |
