Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Analisis CSIS
Volume / Edisi : 45 (No. 4)
Halaman : 381-296

Science in the News

Pengarang : Lucas Menke and Jerrid Kruse
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Science teacher
Volume / Edisi : 90 (No. 6)
Halaman : 57-61
Abstrak : Many have argued for a more holistic approach to scientific literacy that includes an understanding of science content along with the interactions science has with society and the use of science as a tool for social change (Valladares 2021). Socioscientific issues (SSI)–based instruction is a compelling method for helping students develop such functional scientific literacy (Herman et al. 2022; Zeidler and Sadler 2011). SSI are complex issues in society that have deep connections to science and/or technology (Sadler et al. 2004). As such, students must consider multiple perspectives and ideas to navigate the complexity of the real world (Owens et al. 2021), thus promoting scientific thinking and high-quality decision-making (Ke et al. 2021; Zeidler and Sadler 2011). To help foster these skills and knowledge in students, we developed a way to promote robust scientific literacy with small modifications and additions to existing media sources. These edits result in educative modules that present students with an SSI to consider and reflect upon. In this article we describe the potential learning domains and outcomes associated with SSI and these modules.

Did friendship impair the auditor's independence?

Pengarang : Sherwood, Matthew,Porter, Christine
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Issues in Accounting Education
Volume / Edisi : 37 (No. 4)
Halaman : 121–130
Abstrak : The objective of this case is to help students identify potential violations of independence between a member of an external financial statement audit team and a client employee. Additionally, this case informs students of the audit firm's responsibilities to identify and address independence violations should they arise. The concept of independence is often difficult for students without any practice-oriented exposure to grasp. The case, loosely based on an actual auditor-client situation, presents a situation an audit professional might encounter in the ordinary course of business to bring the concept of independence to life. Instructors can use this case to enhance their lecture and discussion of auditor independence, either as a graded assignment or a guide for an in-depth class discussion.

Connecting the Science of Water to Students Communities

Pengarang : Molly German, Jessica Hernandez, and Rachel Scherr
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Science teacher
Volume / Edisi : 90 (No. 6)
Halaman : 52-56
Abstrak : School education often directs students’ attention away from their own lived experiences toward knowledge developed in other places by people they will likely never meet (Smith 2002). Students in traditional science courses commonly learn from reading texts, listening to lectures, and completing worksheets rather than direct encounters with the world around them. Place-based education, by contrast, acknowledges that for many students, “valuable knowledge… is knowledge that is directly related to their own social reality, knowledge that will allow them to engage in activities that are of service to and valued by those they love and respect” (Smith 2002). Place-based education fosters understanding of one’s surrounding landscapes, environments, and communities; it engages learner-based, inquiry-oriented, interdisciplinary approaches to explore the ecological, cultural, and economic perspectives of a community (Deloria Jr. and Wildcat 2001). In the past several years, teachers at my school have been working to incorporate into our teaching human impacts on the environment and relevant environmental justice issues. Place-based education, which is rooted in historic and Indigenous educational practices, strongly supports environmental stewardship (Cajete 2000). During my chemistry teaching, I increase student engagement by helping students see connections between the analytical problem solving supported by a typical school chemistry curriculum and their own lives, families, and cultures. Water is an effective anchor topic to connect cross-disciplinary academic learning with real-world experiences (Endreny 2010; Santelmann et al. 2011). My students and their families have many memorable experiences with water that I felt would connect well to this science unit. In this article, I describe the place-based educational experiences I supported for my students in their studies of water in chemistry. Student learning goals for this unit included.

Volume / Edisi : 37 (No. 4)
Halaman : 107–120
Abstrak : This instructional case describes an embezzlement committed by the former executive director of a Southeast Idaho nonprofit organization, New Day Products. The case, based on an organization that helps people with disabilities, provides a rich context for students to learn about the important roles and responsibilities of nonprofit organizations' boards of directors. Highlighting the challenges faced by nonprofit boards of directors, the case asks students to consider how New Day Products' board of directors' governance decisions, including choosing financial statement reviews rather than audits, increased the executive director's opportunities to commit fraud.
