| Abstrak | : | Each year, millions of people donate blood at blood centers run by not-for-profit organizations such as the American Red Cross, which supply blood products to hospitals. Many people can also give blood plasma and receive cash compensation from for-profit pharmaceutical companies, which use plasma to develop and manufacture medical products. Blood donations raise interesting accounting issues. How should the blood and plasma donations be accounted for by a not-for-profit organization and a for-profit company, respectively? How are these similar transactions manifested differently in their financial statements? Is the accounting treatment consistent with the objectives of the entities? What are the ethical and social issues in paying for plasma donation? The case leverages students' familiarity with accounting standards for business enterprises to deepen their understanding of not-for-profit accounting. The case also challenges students to think critically about accounting concepts and improve their Codification research skills. |

| Abstrak | : | The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) highlight the importance of creating more equitable learning environments and engaging all students in science (NGSS Lead States 2013). In professional learning, we target the hands-on, minds-on experiences teachers already use with students as the starting point of rethinking instructional design. Next, we focus on the evidence-based claims students can make from hands-on, minds-on experiences. With this key focus, teachers can develop pre-assessments that elicit students’ ideas and experiences and lead to evidence-based experiences. Similarly, students’ evidence-based experiences help teachers focus on essential need-to-know information presented through discussions, readings, and further elaborations (see Figure 1). Teachers appreciate the process because it helps them prioritize the most salient aspects of curriculum design to ensure we promote more equitable, robust, and memorable experiences for all students. |

| Abstrak | : | This learning strategy provides accounting faculty with a detailed course design and materials for a 3-credit, 14-week RPA course at the graduate level. This learning strategy is valuable in four respects. First, it leverages existing materials in the public domain and provides accounting faculty with a potential framework for using these materials to create an RPA course. Second, it teaches students RPA concepts and provides them with hands-on skills. Third, although it features a stand-alone RPA course, specific modules from this course can also be used as non-technical tutorials and be integrated into existing accounting courses. Last, it features resource and experience sharing based on the course implementation. Overall, this learning strategy adds an alternative resource to accounting faculty considering teaching RPA. |

| Abstrak | : | Carl Sagan famously said “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology” (Sagan, 1990, p. 264). As demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, all adults need to make decisions that require scientific knowledge and understanding. In some cases, lives will hang in the balance. High school science classes offer one of the last formal opportunities for students to become scientifically literate. However, knowing how science is done isn’t sufficient. Students must also develop the skills to apply that understanding in their adult lives. For this reason, educators can benefit from consideration of how adults learn and make decisions. |
Accounting academics' perceptions of 12 research journals

| Abstrak | : | This paper reports perceptions of over 1,000 accounting faculty regarding 12 accounting journals, specifically in how open they are to: (1) diverse topic areas, (2) diverse research methodologies, how effectively they produce new and useful knowledge for (3) non-academic stakeholders, and (4) academics. We find that the traditional Top 6 journals do not lead the academy along these four dimensions; in fact, some are viewed as the worst performers in these areas. Furthermore, we find that academics have a relatively poor understanding of the actual diversity of several journals. We also report how the academy perceives each journal's current value and how each journal should be valued when evaluating faculty on research productivity. We find that respondents believe the traditional Top 6 journals are and should continue to be weighted highly in faculty evaluation, but that the other journals should receive greater weighting. |
