Critical-liberation psychotherapy: Unsettling hegemonic power toward liberatory practice.

| Abstrak | : | Can psychotherapy support liberation? Critical and liberation psychologies have long critiqued psychology’s relationship to power. Analyzing power draws attention to the inbuilt cultural assumptions and values that have shaped theory and practice in psychology. Mainstream psychotherapy, for instance, risks functioning to preserve rather than disrupt an oppressive status quo that contributes to clients’ distress. We conducted a critical analysis of hegemonic power in mainstream psychotherapy and its embeddedness in moral, historical, and sociopolitical contexts. In this article, we identify impediments to liberatory psychotherapy, and we critique psychotherapeutic imperialism as the standard of care. Moving beyond critique, we have stewarded and described a Critical-Liberation Psychotherapy (CLP) model. CLP is decolonial in nature, developed out of a mutual accompaniment process that recenters marginalized views and practices from within and outside of psychology. CLP addresses intersectional power dynamics in psychotherapy. Through radical relationality and by facilitating the exploration of clients’ lived experiences in context, CLP aims to promote critical consciousness. We outline and illustrate CLP approaches to clinical formulation and distinctive in-session practices. Finally, we review its limitations and underscore how CLP functions to support refashioning subjectivities and modes of relating that expand liberatory possibilities. |

Supervision as decolonial love: Toward a transformative training process for Palestinian community health workers.

| Abstrak | : | Settler colonialism dehumanizes and alienates Palestinians in everyday life, including in our Whitestream mental health research, practice, teaching, and supervision practices. In this article, we focus on sharing insights into our supervision praxis in Palestine. We, the coauthors of this article, are four Palestinian psychologists and therapists, living and working in the Diaspora (Devin and Hana), in the Palestinian territories occupied by the state of Israel (Nihaya), and in the nation-state of Israel itself (Caesar). In this article, through conversation, we seek to articulate decolonial practices and epistemologies within our implementation process of a training workbook for community health workers in a refugee camp in the West Bank, Palestine. Our training process was based on a workbook entitled CURCUM’s Trees: A Decolonial Healing Guide for Palestinian Community Health Workers (available for free download in English at https://mayflybooks.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CURCUMs-Trees_A-Decolonial-Healing-Guide_ENGLISH-VERSION.pdf and in Arabic at https://mayflybooks.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CURCUMs-Trees-Arabic-Version.pdf). We, as the four coauthors of this article, decided to write this article in storytelling prose. We invite readers to bear witness to our intimate conversation, which was audio recorded one evening in Palestine, in June 2023. We share excerpts from this transcribed conversation, where we strive to describe our decolonial praxis in the face of indescribable colonial violence. We shed light on the pathways and complexities of creating transformative training processes for community workers in conditions marked by settler colonialism. We wrestle with our own positionalities, epistemologies, and relationships through enactments of decolonial love. In doing so, conceptualize our supervision praxis as holding and seeing each other deeply and decolonially toward reenvisioning possibilities for liberation unbound by settler colonialism. |
Design-Based Maps for Finite Populations of Spatial Units

| Abstrak | : | The estimation of the values of a survey variable in finite populations of spatial units is considered for making maps when samples of spatial units are selected by probabilistic sampling schemes. The single values are estimated by means of an inverse distance weighting predictor. The design-based asymptotic properties of the resulting maps, referred to as the design-based maps, are considered when the study area remains fixed and the sizes of the spatial units tend to zero. Conditions ensuring design-based asymptotic unbiasedness and consistency are derived. They essentially require the existence of a pointwise or uniformly continuous density function of the survey variable onto the study area, some regularities in the size and shape of the units, and the use of spatially balanced designs to select units. The continuity assumption can be relaxed into a Riemann integrability assumption when estimation is performed at a sufficiently small spatial grain and the estimates are subsequently aggregated at a greater grain. A computationally simple mean squared error estimator is proposed. A simulation study is performed to assess the theoretical results. An application to estimate the map of wine cultivations in Tuscany (Central Italy) is considered. Supplementary materials for this article are available online. |

Practice guidelines for ALIVE comentoring: An approach to liberating psychology education and training from the inside out.

| Abstrak | : | Western psychology has historically been a field that has excluded from its training pathways individuals who are members of the racial and ethnic global majority (e.g., Indigenous, African, Latinx, Asian). While progress has been made, 83% of practicing psychologists and 75% of doctoral trainees are White and not representative of global diversity. We describe a set of practice guidelines for mentoring within psychology training that was codeveloped to respond to oppressive conditions. The framework for these guidelines was organically shaped and practiced over 5 years in the Advocacy, Liberation, Immigration, Vocational Psychology, and Education Lab. These practices are grounded in liberation psychology, centering the lived experiences of individuals who are minoritized in society and elucidating processes for eradicating oppression. Advocacy, Liberation, Immigration, Vocational Psychology, and Education comentoring is practiced by (a) creating safety and resistance from systems of oppression, (b) prioritizing care for each other’s humanity, (c) awakening critical consciousness through honest dialogue, (d) coleading among minoritized individuals, (e) witnessing cultural virtues, (f) encouraging practices for social justice and structural change, and (g) collaborating across mental health disciplines. We offer insights for mentoring practice based on testimonios from seven students and faculty. These guidelines have implications for psychology training programs to become liberated from racist constraints. |
Bayesian Nonparametric Calibration and Combination of Predictive Distributions

| Abstrak | : | We introduce a Bayesian approach to predictive density calibration and combination that accounts for parameter uncertainty and model set incompleteness through the use of random calibration functionals and random combination weights. Building on the work of Ranjan and Gneiting, we use infinite beta mixtures for the calibration. The proposed Bayesian nonparametric approach takes advantage of the flexibility of Dirichlet process mixtures to achieve any continuous deformation of linearly combined predictive distributions. The inference procedure is based on combination Gibbs and slice sampling. We provide some conditions under which the proposed probabilistic calibration converges in terms of weak posterior consistency to the true underlying density for both cases of iid and Markovian observations. This calibration property improves upon the earlier calibration approaches. We study the methodology in simulation examples with fat tails and multimodal densities and apply it to density forecasts of daily S&P returns and daily maximum wind speed at the Frankfurt airport. | Abstrak | : | Indigenous science and education provide classification systems for ordering the natural, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual worlds. Alaska Native groups have shared values about life, kinship, and the interconnectedness of human beings. However, these values and knowledge systems are contested in the European American educational landscape, subjugating Alaska Native peoples through assimilatory acts of settler colonialism (e.g., boarding schools, Eurocentric achievement standards). Decolonization demands action, more than inclusion, to dismantle settler-colonialism and to address all the diverse manifestations and permeations across Tribal Nations. Further, Indigenous psychologies of liberation presume that action needs to take the form of indigenization, cultural-derived antidotes to healing soul wounds, with embodied representations of cultural practices, lives, and epistemologies. Thus, we will discuss the intentional, liberatory act of embedding and reinforcing Alaska Native Elders (i.e., wisdom holders, culture bearers) in the classroom within the Rural Human Services program at the University of Alaska. Using an Indigenous Inquiry Framework, we interviewed four Alaska Native graduates, one non-Native graduate, two allies, and one Alaska Native Elder graduate. Analysis of barriers and Indigenous liberation identified four key domains: (a) transformative healing and love, (b) Indigenous identity development, (c) a generative and holistic education, and (d) allyship. This organization of Alaska Native expertise in the University of Alaska system reflects the growing reclamation of Alaska Native education in the hands of Alaska Native leaders and communities. Alaska Native Elders in the classroom is a fruition of ancestral directives that facilitate space for gathering, deepening, and sharing knowledge, wisdom, and healing. |
Boosting in the Presence of Outliers: Adaptive Classification With Nonconvex Loss Functions

| Abstrak | : | This article examines the role and the efficiency of nonconvex loss functions for binary classification problems. In particular, we investigate how to design adaptive and effective boosting algorithms that are robust to the presence of outliers in the data or to the presence of errors in the observed data labels. We demonstrate that nonconvex losses play an important role for prediction accuracy because of the diminishing gradient properties—the ability of the losses to efficiently adapt to the outlying data. We propose a new boosting framework called ArchBoost that uses diminishing gradient property directly and leads to boosting algorithms that are provably robust. Along with the ArchBoost framework, a family of nonconvex losses is proposed, which leads to the new robust boosting algorithms, named adaptive robust boosting (ARB). Furthermore, we develop a new breakdown point analysis and a new influence function analysis that demonstrate gains in robustness. Moreover, based only on local curvatures, we establish statistical and optimization properties of the proposed ArchBoost algorithms with highly nonconvex losses. Extensive numerical and real data examples illustrate theoretical properties and reveal advantages over the existing boosting methods when data are perturbed by an adversary or otherwise.
