| Abstrak | : | As science classrooms become more linguistically diverse, it is becom ing increasingly important that pre-service teachers (PSTs) are trained with the skills and knowledge they need to support science learning for all students, especially English Learners. The purpose of this study was to determine how 11 secondary science PSTs’ instructional planning for language- and literacy-integrated science instruction changed over the course of their participation in two language- and literacy-integrated science methods courses. Data sources included open-ended survey questions, interviews, and participant-created lesson plans, instruc tional materials, and reflections. Inductive and deductive qualitative analyses were employed to identify themes across participants and data sources. Results suggest that, following participation in the meth ods courses, more PSTs integrated language- and literacy-integrated science practices into their instructional materials than prior to the intervention. Further, important changes in the nature of integration were observed. Results add to the emerging literature on preparing secondary science PSTs to teach in linguistically diverse classrooms and have implications for science teacher education and student learning. |

| Abstrak | : | More sustainable environmental behavior and management is necessary if we are to sustain human well-being; however, current educational practices are not well aligned to support the development of environ mentally informed citizens, including adequate teacher preparation. Classroom teachers are in a unique position to develop student skills and knowledge for sustainable environmental behavior through their teaching. Yet, teachers report a gap in their understanding of social- ecological systems, which presents a barrier to developing environmental citizens, or those enacting the skills and knowledge necessary for sustain able environmental behavior. This study focuses on the impact of a teacher professional development workshop designed to develop tea chers’ understanding of local social-ecological systems. We explore the effects of the workshop through the framework of environmental citizen ship which has five components: Ecological Literacy, Civics Literacy, Self- Efficacy, Values Awareness, and Practical Wisdom. The quasi-experimental design included a pre- and post-survey of teacher participants’ environ mental citizenship. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed that the med ian posttest scores were significantly higher than the median pretest scores, indicating a statistically significant increase in environmental citi zenship for all five components. The environmental citizenship of tea chers has not been reported in the literature, despite the emerging importance of environmental citizenship dispositions for delivering social-ecological systems content. Although the nature of the study limits our ability to generalize beyond this case, our findings suggest that environmental citizenship may increase as a result of teacher professional development, with potential to inform the type of education that leads to fostering environmental citizenship in students. |

| Abstrak | : | The regression kink (RK) design is an increasingly popular empirical method for estimating causal effects of policies, such as the effect of unemployment benefits on unemployment duration. Using simulation studies based on data from existing RK designs, we empirically document that the statistical significance of RK estimators based on conventional standard errors can be spurious. In the simulations, false positives arise as a consequence of nonlinearities in the underlying relationship between the outcome and the assignment variable, confirming concerns about the misspecification bias of discontinuity estimators pointed out by Calonico, Cattaneo, and Titiunik. As a complement to standard RK inference, we propose that researchers construct a distribution of placebo estimates in regions with and without a policy kink and use this distribution to gauge statistical significance. Under the assumption that the location of the kink point is random, this permutation test has exact size in finite samples for testing a sharp null hypothesis of no effect of the policy on the outcome. We implement simulation studies based on existing RK applications that estimate the effect of unemployment benefits on unemployment duration and show that our permutation test as well as inference procedures proposed by Calonico, Cattaneo, and Titiunik improve upon the size of standard approaches, while having sufficient power to detect an effect of unemployment benefits on unemployment duration. | Abstrak | : | There is growing recognition of the prevalence of “within school churn”, a phenomenon in which teachers remain within a school but are assigned a new grade level or course. In this study we examine the consequences of within-school churn for the pedagogical content knowledge of elementary teacher participants in an NSF-funded science PD program. We argue grade-level reassignment is akin to out- of-field science teaching for elementary teachers, as they encounter a new set of grade-specific standards, new subject matter topics, and new curricula. We observed that elementary teachers can be “re- noviced” when assigned to a new grade level, in that they may lack content knowledge and/or pedagogical content knowledge for teach ing their new science topics. Nonetheless, we argue there are impor tant similarities between experienced and reassigned teachers that merit consideration of their unique professional learning needs in comparison to novice teachers. |
