Embracing the Game-Like Character of Science and Engineering Activities: A Perspective to Guide Teachers' Instructional Decisions

Abstrak : Recent science education reforms emphasize the goal of developing students' science and engineering practices. To foreground those practices during science instruction, teachers need conceptual tools to guide their instructional decision-making. In this conceptual paper, I propose that thinking about science and engineering activities as educative games provides a useful model for designing productive educational experiences. Central to this argument is a recognition of the ways that games allow learners to experience and cultivate new forms of agency-including those aligned with the practice of science and engineering. When immersed in a game, a student/player pursues clearly defined goals using a limited set of available actions, and in doing so they act out and experience a form of agency that they might not otherwise have been able to access. Viewed in this way, science and engineering activities can be analyzed and evaluated with respect to the forms of agency that they cultivate in students, including the extent to which those forms of agency are consistent with those of science and engineering. In addition to presenting this way of thinking about science and engineering activities, this paper proposes a practical model to assist teachers in analyzing and designing science and engineering learning activities.

Lessons from transforming second-year honors physics lab Available to Purchase

Abstrak : New technology like the Arduino microcontroller platform presents an opportunity to transform Beyond the First Year (BFY) physics labs to better prepare physics students for work in research labs and beyond. The flexibility, low cost, and power of these devices provide an attractive way for students to learn to use and master research-grade instrumentation. Therefore, we introduced new technology, including Arduino Due microcontroller boards, to a second-year honors physics lab in order to provide improved learning experiences for students. This transformation was implemented in three lab modules and focused on diminishing the black box nature of the traditional labs while encouraging students to engage in troubleshooting. The importance of troubleshooting was made evident to students by the instructor emphasizing it as an inevitable and central part of experimentation. This lab transformation also required that students perform work that was “above and beyond” the scope of the assigned experimental work for part of the course credit. While the technological aspects of the transformation were received well by a majority of students, our observations during the initial implementation suggested a need for some modifications to instructional practices in order to improve the learning and experiences for all students. In particular, we find that many students can benefit from additional scaffolding in order to complete above and beyond work. Similarly, we find that students in general, and under-represented students such as women, in particular, may need thoughtful intervention from the instructor, e.g., in order to avoid becoming isolated when the lab work is designed for pair work. Otherwise, some students may be left to work alone with a disproportionate work-load if students choose their own partners. With these lessons taken into account, recent student experiences in the transformed lab were notably improved.

Preservice Biology Teachers’ Generic and Subject-specific Career Choice Motives

Abstrak : Teachers’ career choice motives are defined as the interests, orienta tions, and motives of young people that motivate them to aspire the teaching career. Teachers’ career choice motives have been shown to impact teaching and job retention. Many studies investigated teachers generic career choice motives but studies on teachers’ subject-specific career choice motives are widely missing. This study investigated preservice biology teachers’ (N = 168) generic and subject-specific career choice motives by using open-ended questions and applying a qualitative content analysis approach to the data analysis. Category systems with generic and subject-specific career choice motives were deductively developed and inductively refined. The findings suggest intrinsic and altruistic motives to be most prominent. In contrast to most previous studies, the extrinsic motive benefits and returns of the teaching profession was also mentioned quite often. Furthermore, the qualitative approach made it possible to differentiate between the motives subject interest in biology and relevance of biology. Only small relationships were found between the generic and the subject-specific career choice motives of the participants and between the career choice motives and sociodemographic background variables. Implications for future research and teacher education are proposed.

Connecting field and intensity correlations: The Siegert relation and how to test it

Abstrak : The Siegert relation relates electric field and intensity correlations of light, under given assumptions. After a brief derivation of the relation, we present an experimental setup that can be implemented in a student laboratory: it allows measuring both field and intensity correlations at the same time, thus providing a direct test of the Siegert relation. Some experimental results are presented when the scattering medium corresponds to a cold atomic cloud. As a conclusion, we discuss typical situations where the relation fails.

A step forward in kinesthetic activities for teaching kinematics in introductory physics

Abstrak : We present a set of kinesthetic activities that utilize a local positioning system to teach kinematics in the physics classroom or laboratory. The activities build on previously reported activities in scope and complexity, incorporating two-dimensional motion and the simultaneous motions of multiple bodies. In these activities, students act out motions illustrated in graphs of kinematic quantities while holding a local positioning system device that tracks their position. Students are able to watch the data as they are graphed in real-time. These activities provide a kinesthetic experience of kinematics by allowing students to analyze their own movement rather than just the movement of specialized laboratory equipment.

Generalizing thermal resistance and a general thermal engine

Abstrak : This article outlines a generalization of the thermal resistance concept used to model and quantify the rates of spontaneous heat transfer. This leads to the natural corollary that a Carnot cycle possesses zero thermal resistance and provides restatements of the Clausius and Kelvin statements of the second law of thermodynamics. Subsequently, basic aspects of a general thermal engine are modeled by the series combination of two non-zero thermal resistances with a Carnot cycle. With constant thermal resistances, the efficiency at maximum power is found to be in agreement with previous literature also concluding that engine power is zero at the Carnot efficiency. An explicit form limiting maximum power output to system thermal resistance and reservoir temperatures is given. Minimizing the thermal resistance maximizes power output, congruent with maximizing heat flow and entropy production. Implications of this model towards practical power generation are presented.
