The forced harmonic oscillator: Coherent states and the RWA Available to Purchase

Volume / Edisi : 87 (No. 10)
Halaman : 815-823
Abstrak : We consider a forced harmonic oscillator in one-dimension. Using coherent states, we show that the treatment of the system is simplified, that the relationship between the classical and quantum solutions becomes transparent, and that the evolution operator of the system can be calculated easily as the free evolution operator of the harmonic oscillator followed by a displacement operator that depends on the classical solution. In addition, we consider the system in the rotating-wave-approximation (RWA), an application of the Averaging Theorem. We determine the relationship between the exact solution and the one in the RWA, test the accuracy of the RWA, and explain why the RWA gives accurate results in the realm of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Finally, we apply the results to a charged particle interacting with an electromagnetic field.

Teacher Educator Technology Integration Preparation Practices Around TPACK in the United States

Pengarang : Nelson, Michael J.,Rick Voithofer
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Journal of Teacher Education
Volume / Edisi : 72 (No. 3)
Halaman : 314-328
Abstrak : Given the strong influence of teachers educators' pedagogical modeling on new teachers' capacity to use technology to support student learning, this study sought to answer two interrelated questions: (a) How are teacher educators and teacher education programs currently working to prepare teachers to integrate technology? and (b) How are teacher educators implementing the TPACK (complex integration of technological [T], pedagogical [P], and content [C] knowledge [K]) model? The evidence to answer these questions was derived from an analysis of quantitative and qualitative survey responses from 843 teacher educators from approximately half (n = 541) of the accredited teacher education programs in the country. The results showed that teacher educators are increasingly integrating technology across the curriculum, that there is a fairly low level of TPACK adoption, and that conceptions of TPACK vary greatly. The study helps to better understand these teacher educator practices in relationship to the literature on preparing teachers to use technology to support student learning.

Evolution of quasi-history of the Planck blackbody radiation equation in a physics textbook Available to Purchase

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Journal of Physics
Volume / Edisi : 86 (No. 12)
Halaman : 887–892
Abstrak : In physics textbooks, the emphasis is normally placed on the physics. In order to give the subject a deeper dimension, the inclusion of history and persons involved in the development has been increasing. However, the actual historical development does not always follow a linear progression, which is the way the physics is presented in textbooks. In order to study how the inclusion of “history” has influenced the presentation, a study of the development of a well-known history in different editions of a physics textbook is done. The gradual development of a quasi-history is observed and possible explanations for this are investigated.

Cycloidal paths in physics as superpositions of translational and rotational motions

Pengarang : David C. Johnston
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Journal of Physics
Volume / Edisi : 87 (No. 10)
Halaman : 802-814
Abstrak : Cycloidal paths are ubiquitous in physics. Here, we show that representative cycloidal paths in physics can be described as superpositions of translations and rotations of a point through space. Using this unifying principle, the parametric equations of the path of a point on a rolling disk are derived for rolling without slipping, rolling with frictionless slipping, and when kinetic solid-on-solid friction is present during rolling with slipping. In a similar way, the parametric equations versus time for the orbit with respect to a star of a moon in a circular orbit about a planet that is in a circular orbit about a star are derived, where the orbits are coplanar. The parametric equations versus time for the path of the magnetization vector during undamped electron-spin resonance are found using the same principle, which show that cycloidal paths can occur under specified conditions.

Do I feel threatened No Im learning Affective and relational dynamics in science professional development

Pengarang : Carla Finkelstein, Lama Z. Jaber, Vesal Dini
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Science Education
Volume / Edisi : 103 (No. 2)
Halaman : 338-361
Abstrak : This paper focuses on interactions in a science professional development (PD) course in which participating teachers engaged in doing science. Whereas the PD design of this course aligned with research on effective PD practices, we found that these practices did not sufficiently account for the affective and relational dynamics that unfolded in the PD interactions. In this paper we explore how critical discourse analysis (CDA) can be used both to theorize and analyze the affective and relational work happening in PD, through the critical lenses of power and positioning. Our analysis surfaces tensions between participants and facilitators, as well as among participants, which often related to their notions of disciplinary expertise. More important, our analysis shows that attunement to affective and relational dynamics, including explicit attention to communication norms, is essential for engendering productive learning opportunities within PD spaces. We discuss the implications of this study for teacher educators and PD facilitators, and we end with directions for future research on affective and relational dynamics in teacher learning.

Zero range potential approximation in quantum scattering problems

Pengarang : Eliton Popovicz Seidel
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Journal of Physics
Volume / Edisi : 87 (No. 10)
Halaman : 796-801
Abstrak : This article presents the Zero Range Potential (ZRP) approximation as an alternative to treat quantum scattering problems. The main focus is to provide an undergraduate-level derivation of the ZRP boundary condition that describes the interaction between an electron and a potential, using the spherical-potential-well analytical solutions. The validity of the approximation is discussed qualitatively and quantitatively. Finally, the ZRP approximation is applied to the scattering of an electron by an atom, comparing the results obtained with modern experimental measurements.

Science and language integration with English learners: A conceptual framework guiding instructional materials development

Pengarang : Okhee Lee, Lorena Llosa, Scott Grapin, Alison Haas, Marcelle Goggins
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Science Education
Volume / Edisi : 103 (No. 2)
Halaman : 317-337
Abstrak : The purpose of this study is to present a conceptual framework that integrates science and language learning for all students, including English learners (ELs). This framework is grounded in the mutually supportive nature of science instructional shifts, spurred by A Framework for K-12 Science Education (National Research Council, 2012. A framework for K-12 science education: Practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and language instructional shifts, informed by contemporary thinking in second language acquisition. First, we describe the conceptual framework that consists of our perspective and design principles. Then, we describe one approach for using the conceptual framework to develop NGSS-aligned instructional materials that promote science and language learning with elementary students, including ELs. Finally, we offer implications for future research for our own design research specifically and for the field more broadly. The conceptual framework highlights how substantive collaboration between content areas, such as science, and the field of EL education can help ensure that all students, and ELs in particular, are supported in meeting rigorous content standards while developing proficiency in English.
