Pada tahun 1927 Sultan Hmnengkubuwana VIII menerbitkan lembar kernjaan (rijksblaad) Pranatan Dalem Bab Jenenge Panganggo Keprabon Ing Kera ton Nagari Yogyakarta yang mengatur pemakaian pola-pola batik tertentu untuk keluarga Kernton Yogyakarta. Batik adalalz artefak penting dari Keraton Yogyakarta yang memiliki simbol dan menjelaskan kedudukan pemakai serta rnakna di baliknya. Tujuan tulisan ini adalah mengkaji pola-pola batik tulis Kernton Yogyakarta dengan simbol yang melekat. Metodologi dalam penulisan ini adalah deskriptif narntif, memakai pendekatan sejara/z. Pola-pola pada batik kernton dengan simbol tersebut kerap terjadi konflik dengan penguasa kolonial Belanda, nmnun di bawah kepemimpinan Sultan Hmnengkubuwana VIII, berhasil didudukkan. sebagai benda budaya yang semakin detail, ke dalam, dan memperkokoh Kernton Yogyakarta. |

| Abstrak | : | Dr. Cross is correct that we did not use1 the correct form of the coefficient of restitution (COR) to quantify the conservation of total kinetic energy. The form described in his letter does a better job of quantifying conservation of total kinetic energy. We could have corrected our mistake by calling the form we used the “translational coefficient of restitution,” rather than just the COR. The form that we used in our article is the one used universally (or nearly so) in introductory textbooks. We could not find a counterexample. These texts do not discuss caveats that this form only quantifies conservation of center-of mass translational kinetic energy, the conclusion that we reached in our article. | Abstrak | : | In a recent article in this journal,1 a claim is made that kinetic energy can be conserved in a perfectly elastic collision between two objects even if the coefficient of restitution (COR) is not “perfect,” that is, the COR is less than unity. The authors defined the COR in terms of the normal velocity components of the center of mass of each object, which is a relatively common definition referring only to translational motion of the two objects. If one or both objects rotate after the collision, then it is more generally useful to define the COR in terms of the normal components of the incoming and outgoing speeds of the two objects at the point of impact. It is then easy to show that the COR is equal to unity in a perfectly elastic collision, regardless of the point of impact.2 Instead, the authors ended up with values of the COR that depended on the impact point. That problem is recognized by U.S. Major League Baseball, which specifies the performance of baseball bats in terms of the COR at the point of impact.3 |

| Abstrak | : | In the March issue of TPT, Colm O’Sullivan and Stephen Fahy discuss the pedagogical dilemma teachers face when teaching about magnetism and magnetic materials.1 The upshot of their article is that “to avoid embedding misconceptions when discussing magnetic materials … the electron must be understood as an elementary particle that has two independent fundamental electromagnetic properties—its charge and its magnetic moment.” I wholeheartedly agree with this statement and would further emphasize that, tempting as it may be, teachers should avoid using the magnetic pole model altogether. It is just as easy (and perhaps even easier) to instead introduce a model based on microscopic magnets. Such a model provides a more accurate view of reality and ultimately a more powerful predictive tool than a magnetic pole model.
