| Abstrak | : | Teaching English in Indonesia, particularly for students, remains a great challenge owing to the fact that English is a foreign language in this country. The challenge could be tackled through teaching literature. Literature has been a subject of study in many countries at a secondary or tertiary level, but until recently has not been given much emphasis in the EFL/ESL classroom. It is considered a very versatile subject and is generally considered one of the most difficult subjects to teach. Central to teaching literature in the classroom is to let students be involved in the experience and let them observe life more closely. |

| Abstrak | : | This study aims to see factors contributing to the implementation of a web-based Paragraph Writing class. The survey research design using open-ended questionnaire was implemented to find out the aspects, and based on the factors found from the questionnaire, an interview was developed to clarify how the factors really contributed to the students' writing skills. The subjects were the English Letters Department students of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta who were taking Paragraph Writing classes during the even semester academic year 20l0/2011. The results show that there are twelve high factors and also one other factor contributing to the implementation of the web-based Paragraph Writing class. |

| Abstrak | : | This paper discusses the implications of using the auditory priming method in teaching English word stress to Indonesian university students. In auditory priming experiment, 30 participants had to pronounce 80 English words after hearing the stimuli (i.e. pre-recorded 80 words with correct stress placement). The data was taken from the recordings of the students' responses, which were transcribed caref ully to determine the stress placement. Research revealed that auditory priming effect was achieved although the result was not statistically signif icant. The result of this study was signif icant for Indonesian EFL teachers as it give insight for the implementation of the auditory priming method to teach English pronunciation. |

| Abstrak | : | The purpose of the present study is to examine how first-year Thai undergraduate students who learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL) using referential forms in telling a coherent story in English. Participants were at intermediate level of English proficiency. Using Mayer's wordless picture book "Frog, Where Are You?" (1969) as prompts, the participants were asked to tell the story in English. The narratives were tape-recorded and later analyzed. The data were coded on three criteria: (1) referential forms (2) discourse contexts and (3) grammatical functions. The result of the study demonstrates that Thai EFL learners employ several linguistic expressions to maintain clear reference to the characters in their narratives, one of which is using a f ull noun phrase when referring to a character first introduced in the story and one already mentioned. A pronoun is used if the referent is the subject of the previous clause. This finding suggests that Thai EFL learners' referential strategies in narratives are similar to those of the native English speakers to a certain extent. Possible factors accounted for their limited linguistic ability to achieve complete discourse cohesion in English storytelling include language transfer, over-explicitness, and topic discontinuity. |

| Abstrak | : | Although the generic idea is often expressed in discourse, the acquisition of it is so slow among learners. Moreover, this idea is expressed through a highly complex system of the English language called the article system. As a result, learners tend to make errors when they attempt to convey the generic idea in their output. Since the Indonesian language has a different way to express the generic idea, Indonesian learners of English may be interfered by their first language when expressing this idea. Consequently, errors are inevitable. A thorough examination at how the generic idea is expressed in English and in Indonesian is perhaps the only way to understand this complexity. To help learners express the idea correctly and appropriately, teachers should give explicit instruction in forms of mini lesson and explicit corrective feedback (i.e. metalinguistic feedback). This article presents all the patterns to express the generic idea both in English and Indonesian, poses some pedagogical implications and discusses some useful approaches for English teachers in dealing with it. |

| Abstrak | : | Acquiring a foreign language requires a student to master the two elements of language, vocabulary and grammar, and the f our language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Within each skill, these two language clements play a considerably essential role since they are seen as the very core aspects of language learning and that they are regarded inherent in each of these skills. Thus, vocabulary and grammatical aspects cannot be separated from the f our language skills in language acquisition as without any one of which each skill is never acquired. Since the implementation of communicative approach in 1984 to the application of the competency-based language teaching in Indonesia, English programs at high schools have been meaning or message based rather than language usage or form oriented. As a result, grammar learning has been signif icantly kept aside if not totally ignored in class interactions, and that communication success becomes the main target in instructional objectives. This study attempts to map grammatical errors the students make in their speech productions. It employs an interview technique for data collection by recording the conversations of twenty respondents - junior and senior students -- on a selected issue of a particular topic and transcribing them in the f orm of written transcripts which are then to be analyzed from a grammatical perspective with the reference of grammar books. Those violating the grammatical norms will be considered as grammatical errors. It has been found out that learners' grammatical errors are derived from two major causes -- translating concepts of L l into L2 and their approximative system This study concludes that the communicative classrooms which utilize the competency-based language teaching bring about a positive impact upon grammar learning. This research is significant as it gives a great contribution to structure and speaking class teachers, students, as well as to the department for policy making. |

| Abstrak | : | This study describes the gratitude strategies realized by Indonesian EFL learners in responding to different situations. Data were collected from l 7 undergraduate students of English Department of Education Faculty of Atmajaya Catholic University Jakarta by using (O'Keeffe et.al, 20 I 1) Discourse Completion Tasks. This study revealed that the gratitude strategies employed by the participants of this study ranged from simple, brief thankings to lenghty, complex thankings. All participants produced mixed speect act sets of thanking in the following conditions: a) social status (between a vice-president and a newly hired personnel, b) indebtedness (because of money loan and meal treat), and c) breaking promise. On the other hand, in informal contexts, such as between friends and the setting of public area, the participants tended to use simple or brief thanking. |

| Abstrak | : | This paper reports an investigation of factors affecting a successful language learner. It describes how events throughout the learning processes support the learners in becoming successful in learning English as a second language (EFL). Data was collected from personal experiences regarding English language learning by the three student participants and three lecturer participants in the English Department Manado State University, Indonesia. Semi-structured interviews and personal narratives were used to gather the data. There were three key themes generated from the interview data: family and community, institutional inf luences and individual factors. The findings highlight that family members, teachers and individuals play important roles in supporting learners becoming successful in learning English. |

| Abstrak | : | The present study examined Chinese university EFL learners' anxiety in English classrooms in varying learning contexts, and causes for and impact of anxiety on their performance in English. Analyses of 215 journals and 1203 questionnaires revealed the f ollowing conclusions: (l) around a third of the whole participant sample and each university sample experienced anxiety in English class, (2) various reasons such as low proficiency in the target language, lack of vocabulary, lack of practice, Jack of preparation. and poor pronunciation were responsible for anxiety in the participants, and (3) anxiety mainly debilitated the students' performance in English and the majority of the participants felt helpless about feeling anxious when using the language in English class. |

| Abstrak | : | Based on a Gaussian mixture type model of K components, we derive eigen selection procedures that improve the usual spectral clustering algorithms in high-dimensional settings, which typically act on the top few eigenvectors of an affinity matrix (e.g., ??????????) derived from the data matrix ????. Our selection principle formalizes two intuitions: (i) eigenvectors should be dropped when they have no clustering power; (ii) some eigenvectors corresponding to smaller spiked eigenvalues should be dropped due to estimation inaccuracy. Our selection procedures lead to new spectral clustering algorithms: ESSC for K = 2 and GESSC for K > 2. The newly proposed algorithms enjoy better stability and compare favorably against canonical alternatives, as demonstrated in extensive simulation and multiple real data studies.
