| Abstrak | : | In 1900, Lord Kelvin identified two problems for 19th century physics, two “clouds” as he puts it: the relative motion of the ether with respect to massive objects and Maxwell–Boltzmann's theorem on the equipartition of energy. These issues were eventually solved by the theory of special relativity and by quantum mechanics. In modern quotations, the content of Kelvin's lecture is almost always distorted and misrepresented. For example, it is commonly claimed that Kelvin was concerned about the UV-catastrophe of the Rayleigh-Jeans law, while his lecture actually makes no reference at all to blackbody radiation. I rectify these mistakes and explore reasons for their occurrence. |

| Abstrak | : | We study a simple system of charges and currents, consisting of two electric dipoles that are driven by exponentially growing currents running between the ends of each dipole. The exponential time dependence allows the electric and magnetic fields to be calculated exactly. The forces between the dipoles must be evaluated carefully when the exponential growth is slow and are shown to not be equal and opposite. The imbalance is accounted for by the rate of change of momentum in the electromagnetic field, so that the total momentum is conserved even though Newton's third law fails. Implications for momentum conservation for “semistatic” slowly varying currents, for which the Biot–Savart law is applicable, are discussed. |

| Abstrak | : | The toppling motion of a uniform rectangular block is investigated as a function of the friction between its pivot edge and the horizontal surface on which it rests. Initially, the edge of the block remains stationary, but it inevitably slips before the block lands. The inclination angle at which slipping occurs and the direction of slip depend on the coefficient of static friction. The toppling motion of a granite block was monitored at 400 Hz with MEMs gyro/accelerometers at the center of mass and at the pivot edge, as well as by “Tracker” analysis of video recorded at 240 fps. |

| Abstrak | : | Because the charge/discharge process of a battery is not perfectly efficient, there is an optimal point before the end of a downward slope at which a battery-based electric vehicle can save energy by engaging neutral (i.e., coasting). As an exercise in classical mechanics involving air and rolling resistance, we find an analytical expression for this distance on constant slopes, together with an expression for the energy saved. We compare the analytical solution to the numerical solutions for constant and sinusoidal hills. However, considering the characteristics of current electrical vehicles, the energy saved is only a few Wh per typical slope, resulting in negligible gains on any realistic trip. |
