Digital Twins: Synergy Between Data Assimilation and Optimal Control

Pengarang : Sebastian Reich
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Siam News
Volume / Edisi : 58 (No. 3)
Halaman : 1
Abstrak : In the mid-20th century, John von Neumann envisioned numerical weather prediction as a forthcoming revolutionary application of digital computers. As recounted by theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson, von Neumann delivered a talk at Princeton University in 1950 where he stated that “As soon as we have some large computers working, the problems of meteorology will be solved. All processes that are stable we shall predict. All processes that are unstable we shall control” [2]. This vision has since sown the seeds for the modern concept of numerical weather prediction as a digital twin (DT) of actual weather processes.

Next-generation Algorithms for Next-generation Seismology

Pengarang : Matthew R. Francis
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Siam News
Volume / Edisi : 58 (No. 3)
Halaman : 1
Abstrak : High-quality seismic data is essential for the detection and characterization of earthquakes. However, such data can also play a useful role in understanding the impacts of hydrological fracking, volcanic eruptions, glacial melt, and other phenomena. In addition to various types of seismographs, researchers have begun to use fiber-optic cables to increase the coverage area of seismic detection — particularly in locations where other types of detectors would be difficult to deploy.

A Sprinkler Paradox

Pengarang : Mark Levi
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Siam News
Volume / Edisi : 58 (No. 4)
Halaman : 6
Abstrak : With warmer weather coming to the Northeastern U.S., I would like to introduce a few sprinkler-related questions that occurred to me some time ago [1]. The sprinkler in Figure 1 is an S-shaped tube that pivots on a frictionless hinge, with a steady supply of water to the hinge. Water shoots out of both ends of the tube, causing it to spin. The sprinkler was activated in the sufficiently distant past and is now in steady state.
