Calculating Prodigies in the Nineteenth Century: Science as Spectacle or Real Skill?

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The American Mathematical Monthly
Volume / Edisi : 132 (No. 6)
Halaman : 527-539
Abstrak : A calculating prodigy, or mental calculator, is someone who can mentally perform mathematical operations involving very large numbers or very fast mental calculations. From the nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century, this phenomenon met with considerable interest, and several calculating prodigies became famous enough for us to trace their careers. They found themselves at the crossroads of three worlds: the world of entertainment, where their skill at juggling numbers was admired; the world of the brain and psyche, where their peculiarities were explained and used to better understand how the brain functions; and finally, the world of mathematics, where the reproducibility of their methods and their potential as future scientists were of interest. By examining the commonalities in their trajectories, this article explores the images and practices behind the development of numeracy, at the intersection of reasoning and calculation, in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Western societies.

Excavating and Analyzing Mathematics in the Mary Somerville Collection, Oxford

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The American Mathematical Monthly
Volume / Edisi : 132 (No. 6)
Halaman : 512-526
Abstrak : Mary Somerville (1780–1872) was renowned in her lifetime as an expert mathematician, being commissioned in 1827 to write a work that would bring recent developments in physical astronomy in continental Europe to the attention of British readers. Published in 1831, Mechanism of the Heavens was ultimately the only mathematical work published under Somerville’s name. In this paper we explore the substantial Mary Somerville Collection, held by the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, to piece together the traces of mathematics which remain, and build a clearer picture of what it meant for Somerville to be a mathematician in 19th-century Britain.

Abraham Robertson, the Binomial Theorem, and the Nature of Plagiarism in Mathematics

Pengarang : Christopher D. Hollings
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The American Mathematical Monthly
Volume / Edisi : 132 (No. 6)
Halaman : 501-511
Abstrak : We examine a charge made against the Oxford mathematician Abraham Robertson in 1807 that in publishing what he claimed to be a new proof of the Binomial Theorem, he had in fact plagiarized a method used by Leonhard Euler thirty years earlier. We place Robertson and his work into their historical context, before looking at the details of the proof itself and considering the nature of the charges against him. We use the case to reflect on the nature of plagiarism in mathematics.

The Mathematics of Crossword Puzzles: In Celebration of Karen Hunger Parshall

Pengarang : Joseph W. Dauben
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The American Mathematical Monthly
Volume / Edisi : 132 (No. 6)
Halaman : 479-500
Abstrak : The histories of word crosses and their mathematical equivalents, magic squares, go back at least as far as the SATOR squares of ancient and medieval times, and further back in the case of magic squares which were known even earlier in China. The modern crossword puzzle made its debut in America when one first appeared in the New York World in 1913, but the now-familiar 15x15 grid that appears in many newspapers across the country was standardized by The New York Times when the daily crossword puzzle was launched there in 1950 (a Sunday puzzle had been featured in the Times’ Magazine beginning in 1942). Mathematics plays numerous roles in crossword puzzles in diverse ways, from numbers that determine the size of the grid to geometry which is reflected in the symmetries that grids usually assume to numbers explicitly placed in grids, all of which are exemplified and discussed in this tribute to Karen Hunger Parshall, an adept solver of crossword puzzles herself.
