A software-based lock-in measurement for student laboratories

Pengarang : David T. Chuss
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Journal of Physics
Volume / Edisi : 86 (No. 2)
Halaman : 154-158
Abstrak : A student laboratory experiment is presented that introduces the concept of a lock-in measurement through the exploration of the relationship between the power detected from a modulated light source and the distance between the source and the detector. The lock-in measurement is done in software using time-ordered data for both the reference and the detector signals. The achievable experimental sensitivity is shown to increase by several orders of magnitude over the simple case without using modulation. In addition, the student becomes familiar with selected computational techniques pertinent to large data sets.

Teaching about Magnetic Materials—A Pedagogical Dilemma

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 62 (No. 3)
Halaman : 188-190
Abstrak : Although magnetic materials had been studied for over 2000 years, it was not until the development of quantum mechanics in the early years of the 20th century that any satisfactory explanation of their properties could be provided. This paper outlines some of the difficulties that this fact presents for teachers attempting to explain permanent magnetism to learners at different levels who do not have a background in quantum physics. The authors suggest how a consistent and physically correct approach may be achieved.

Analyzing student conceptual understanding of resistor networks using binary, descriptive, and computational questions

Pengarang : Abid H. Mujtaba
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Journal of Physics
Volume / Edisi : 86 (No. 2)
Halaman : 146-152
Abstrak : This paper presents a case study assessing and analyzing student engagement with and responses to binary, descriptive, and computational questions testing the concepts underlying resistor networks (series and parallel combinations). The participants of the study were undergraduate students enrolled in a university in Pakistan. The majority of students struggled with the descriptive question, and while successfully answering the binary and computational ones, they failed to build an expectation for the answer, and betrayed significant lack of conceptual understanding in the process. The data collected was also used to analyze the relative efficacy of the three questions as a means of assessing conceptual understanding. The three questions were revealed to be uncorrelated and unlikely to be testing the same construct. The ability to answer the binary or computational question was observed to be divorced from a deeper understanding of the concepts involved.

Using Drones in a First-Year Physics Lab

Pengarang : Chadwick Young
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 62 (No. 3)
Halaman : 182-187
Abstrak : Drones are increasingly more available, and they collect very accurate positional data. Further, students are fascinated by drones, and some students will use drones in future STEM careers. Then, it is useful for students in an introductory college or high school physics course to conduct experiments and data collection with drones. Herein are six such experiments. This is an entry-level quad drone and costs about $500; we recommend purchasing additional batteries and the charging hub. The drone is small (∼242?g), so it does not require registration or a license to fly.1 In addition to its small size, the flight characteristics, stability, and positional accuracy are well suited for classroom STEM activities.

Using the Contrasting-Cases Approach to Improve Student Ability to Draw Conclusions from Measurement Dat

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 62 (No. 3)
Halaman : 178-181
Abstrak : Measurement uncertainty is a key concept in introductory physics lab courses. Research has demonstrated that students often struggle with grasping the concept and applying it to drawing conclusions from data. The study discussed here explores the utility of an activity to improve students’ ability to draw conclusions from measurement data. This activity uses the contrasting-cases approach, which has been shown to be effective at increasing learning. The utility of the activity was explored in five think-aloud student interviews. Thematic analysis results show that the activity allows students to consider a variety of features from the contrasting cases and critically examine the validity of their conclusions. This suggests that the activity can be implemented in class to promote productive discourse.
