| Abstrak | : | Induction motors (IM) provide a very wide speed range, mechanically robust and relatively low cost motion control option. An up-to-date summary of the status of induction motor motion control technology is the subject of this paper. The topics which this paper includes are as follows: basic motion control system requirements; field orientation instantaneous torque control principles for induction motors (FO-IM); current regulators for induction motor motion control; flux and torque regulators for induction motor motion control; self commissioning and continuous self-tuning for field orientation. Technology advances based on modern control and estimation theory have the potential to further enhance the capability of this important class of servo drive systems. |

| Abstrak | : | The efficient and fast control of electric power forms part of the key technologies of modern automated production. It is performed using electronic power converters. The converters transfer energy from a source to a controlled process in a quantized fashion, using semiconductor switches which are turned on and off at fast repetition rates. The algorithms which generate the switching functions-pulsewidth-modulation techniques-are manifold. They range from simple averaging schemes to involved methods of real-time optimization. This paper gives an overview. |

| Abstrak | : | The historical development of power electronic converters to control electrical machines is traced up to the present state of the technology. The fundamental possibilities to control average power in a switching mode are considered and the concepts switching function, converter topology and converter structure defined. A systematic approach to developing more complicated topologies and structures for singular and composite converters is discussed and application to motion control systems given. A functional classification of motion control converters is also related to the switching nature of the power processing, illustrating the fundamental dilemma of this kind of highly efficient power control. The different control possibilities of using power electronic converters with electrical machines in motion control applications (DC drives, AC drives) are reviewed systematically. The paper does not attempt to compile a comprehensive list of all possible converter circuits and variations but focusses on generic issues and technologies. The switching technology in converters and its limitations is related to snubberless, snubbed, and resonant transition-type operation, with reference also to switch drive and converter protection technology. Some future generic possibilities related to electromagnetic integration of switching converters are discussed, also in relation to a motion control application. |

| Abstrak | : | This paper reviews the developments in microprocessors and digital ICs with a special attention to applications to motion control. First, the use of microprocessors and digital ICs in the control of electric motor drives is considered. General-purpose microprocessors and microcontrollers are then presented with emphasis on features that are necessary for the implementation of real-time control systems. High-performance advanced processors such as digital signal processors (DSPs), reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC) processors, and parallel processors are studied. Development and debugging tools required for developing sophisticated microprocessor-based control systems are considered. The capabilities of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in motion control and their design process are examined. Typical application examples illustrating research work in digital motion control using microprocessors and digital ICs are presented. The potentials of new devices are considered for application to high-performance drive systems. Trends for future development of the microprocessor technology for motion control applications are projected. |

| Abstrak | : | The paper presents a perspective on the various types of motors which are currently in use or proposed for application in variable speed drives. One focus is on motors for industrial and commercial use, reflecting the large and expanding market arising from concerns about energy saving and system optimization. A second focus is on high-performance motors capable of rapid response in speed and position control systems. The machine types considered include commutator, induction, synchronous and switched permanent magnet, and synchronous and switched reluctance. Each machine type is introduced from first principles to establish a basis for comparison and also as an aid to readers who have not recently refreshed their knowledge of electric machines. |

| Abstrak | : | Advances in power semiconductor technology are the driving force for enhancement of the performance of variable-frequency motor drives. The development of power semiconductor devices with MOS-gate structures has enabled the control of large amounts of energy with very little input power. An equally important advancement has taken place in the development of improved rectifiers with reduced losses for high-frequency operation. In addition, the advent of MOS-gated power switches has led to the creation of smart power technology which makes compact systems with built-in diagnostic and protection functions commercially feasible. Although the power semiconductor chips are all made from silicon today, recent analysis has indicated that devices fabricated from silicon carbide have the potential for completely displacing silicon devices in the long range. |
