A textbook my students actually use

Pengarang : Dean A. Stocker
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 216-217
Abstrak : At the end of every semester I ask my students to rate our resources, activities, and assessments using the prompt, “(This resource) helped me to learn physics.” The textbook always ranked in the bottom three. I have many nontraditional students with multiple demands on their time and their resources, and it pained me that they had to pay for something that they did not find useful. So, using LaTeX, I wrote a textbook tailored to my students’ needs. I provide the digital version1 for free, and optional hard copies2 cost roughly the same as printing out the pdf at home. Now my students consistently rank the textbook in the top three most useful things for learning physics.

Degeneracy pressure in stars and stellar corpses

Pengarang : Jeffrey Bennett
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 212-213
Abstrak : The astronomical objects known as brown dwarfs, white dwarfs, and neutron stars seem quite different. A brown dwarf is a “failed star” that is not massive enough (mass less than 0.08MSun) to support steady fusion in its core. A white dwarf is the corpse of a relatively low-mass (less than about 8MSun) star that has died as a result of having used up all its available fuel for fusion. A neutron star is the incredibly dense remains of a massive star that has died in a supernova explosion (but that wasn’t massive enough to leave behind a black hole instead). So you might wonder, do brown dwarfs, white dwarfs, and neutron stars have anything in common?

Exploring refractive indices and lateral ray shifts using smartphone photography: An innovative educational approach

Pengarang : Sanjoy Kumar Pal; Pradipta Panchadhyayee
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 210-211
Abstrak : This study demonstrates a simple method to measure laser beam lateral shifts through liquids and determine refractive indices using smartphone photography. Using a rectangular glass container and ImageJ software, the method is applied to water, diesel, and isopropyl alcohol. Results align with the literature, indicating that this engaging, cost-effective educational tool is accurate.

Direct-Current RL Circuits with Fixed Resistance and Variable Inductance

Pengarang : Bogdan M. Leu
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 206-208
Abstrak : Compared to other circuit elements, inductors and self-inductance seem to find their way less frequently into the lineup of quantitative experiments and demonstrations performed in an introductory physics course. Factors contributing to this situation may include the short timescale of phenomena associated with inductors, the theoretical (calculus-based) background, a lack of suitable, easy-to-use equipment, or simply time constraints.

Temperature Dependent I–V Characterization of a Diode Using an Arduino Shield

Pengarang : Marciano Santamaría; Noriel Correa; José Emilio Moreno; Agustín Orro; Yarien Moreno; Álvaro Maturell
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 201-205
Abstrak : The Arduino development environment, when combined with basic electrical components, is an effective way to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this article, the results of the current–voltage (I–V) behavior of an Si commercial diode, in a wide temperature range, using the Arduino board and a Shield made with basic electronic components, based on a methodology that fully automates the acquisition of the experimental data, are reported.

Determination of the Charge of an Electron Using Faraday’s Law of Electrolysis

Pengarang : Vladimir Ya. Kezerashvili; Roman Ya. Kezerashvili
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 197-200
Abstrak : We are suggesting a simple experiment for the measurement of the charge of an electron based on Faraday’s law of electrolysis, assuming knowledge of the Avogadro constant. The performance and analysis of this experiment are within the skills and knowledge of most students taking algebra-based general physics classes and aimed at teachers of that course in high schools and two- and four-year colleges. It is demonstrated that a student can obtain a reasonable value for the charge of an electron via simple measurements.

Exoplanet and Binary Star Light Curve Demonstration

Pengarang : Adam C. Lark; Bradley Moser
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 193-196
Abstrak : Exoplanets, or planets orbiting around other stars, are currently an active area of research in astronomy1–3 and a hot topic in the introductory astronomy classroom. As a primary approaching to finding exoplanets, astronomers measure the light produced by stars and look for a decrease, or “dip,” in the amount of light. This dip in the brightness can be produced by either an exoplanet or a companion star that crosses, or transits, in front of the host star. We present an introductory astronomy demonstration that obtains a live light curve using a light source, a light sensor, and a pendulum.

Compensating Smartphone Accelerometers for More Precise Classroom Experiments

Pengarang : Hoon Yu
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 189-192
Abstrak : The advancement of technology has made the smartphone a tool that can easily be used not only in everyday life but also in educational environments. In particular, smartphones are equipped with various sensors such as three-axis accelerometers and gyroscopes, and free applications that can export the measurement values of these sensors have been developed, allowing for a variety of experimental activities using smartphones without the need for separate measuring instruments in physics education.1,2 Among them, experiments that analyze the motion of objects using the accelerometer of a smartphone are a good example of confirming and applying basic concepts of mechanics.

A Note on Gravitational Force Between a Non-Spherically Symmetric Mass Distribution and a Point Mass

Pengarang : Pirooz Mohazzabi; Julia Ann Smith Jones
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 186-188
Abstrak : Experience has shown that many students leave introductory physics courses with the impression that in the calculation of gravitational force, the entire mass of an extended object can always be assumed to be located at its center of mass. The objective of this article is to provide some simple counterexamples, and to encourage introductory physics teachers to bring this misconception to the attention of their students, emphasizing that this is not true except for spherically symmetric mass distributions.

Carbonfootbricks: Brick Your Carbon Footprint for Sustainable Decisions in Everyday Life

Pengarang : Philipp Spitzer
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 63 (No. 3)
Halaman : 181-185
Abstrak : Sustainability has increasingly become a central theme in global discourse, profoundly shaping educational paradigms. Education for sustainable development is now a fundamental component of numerous curricula worldwide. In 2020, my colleagues and I published an article on the sustainability of various plastics, detailing their production and recycling processes and their energy implications in this journal.1 The article demonstrated the abstract nature of the topic and the challenges associated with integrating it into educational frameworks. Based on the idea of that article and the discussion of the sustainability of certain product decisions, I introduce an innovative and accessible approach to teach sustainability concepts within science education by using (LEGO) bricks to visually compare the carbon footprints of everyday products.
