| Abstrak | : | On the Edge of the River Sar: A Feminist Translation (2014) is a Spanish-English translation of Rosalía de Castro’s final poetry collection, En las orillas del Sar (1884). I crafted these translations and the accompanying scholarly introduction in 2014, in recognition of the compelling feminist facets of this writer’s cosmovision and literary corpus. To date, this edited volume is the only extant translation of Castro’s master work that implements a specifically feminist methodological approach. Castro, a bilingual 19th-century woman poet, novelist and essayist from Galicia, Spain, and her ethereally beautiful and complex poetry each cross linguistic, political, and literary boundaries, transgressing both social and rhetorical norms. On the Edge of the River Sar is grounded in the expansive bodies of research related to both the poet’s life and works and the theories and praxis of feminist translation. As the gender of Castro’s poetic subjects becomes increasingly more ambiguous in the original Spanish text, these combined frameworks of knowledge provide a rich critical lens from which to render this fascinating collection in English. In particular, in this edition I employ a feminist translation toolkit that includes author- and text-centred supplementation in the form of introductory chapters situating both Castro in her literary and socio-historical context and the feminist translation methods in use; detailed annotations that present textual analysis and discuss translation decisions; and stereoscopic presentation of original poems and English translations. The primary objective of this framework is to explore and make visible the female, feminine, and feminist in each poem. One decade after the publication of this translated volume, the field of feminist translation studies continues to expand, and Feminist Translation Studies will provide a home for future scholars and translators to develop new approaches to translations such as this one. |

| Abstrak | : | This article aims to carry out a feminist paratextual and textual analysis of the English translations of two important Brazilian novels – Parque Industrial. Romance Proletário (1933/2022) by Pagu (Patricia Galvão), translated as Industrial Park: A Proletarian Novel (1993) by Elizabeth Jackson and Jackson, and As Meninas (1973/2009) by Lygia Fagundes Telles, translated as The Girl in the Photograph (1982/2012), by Margaret A. Neves. Written in different periods of Brazilian political history, these books have recently received much attention following a reedition of Pagu’s novel and Telles’ decease in 2022. After briefly introducing the authors and the under-representation of Brazilian women writers in the English translation, this article provides a concise political context in which the novels were published, i.e. the Vargas era (1930–1945) and the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Then, it presents a comparative analysis of the works and their respective translations, starting with paratextual elements and their implications for interpreting the novels. Subsequently, it compares some excerpts from the Portuguese editions and English translations, identifying the singularities in the representations of the female characters. The final considerations advocate for new translations or re-translations of Brazilian literary works to address the under-representation of women authors. |
Women`s representation, feminist and post-feminist discourses in the Latin American and Peninsular Spanish dubbing of Fleabag

| Abstrak | : | In recent studies on audiovisual translation (AVT), the impact of feminist movements and post-feminist sensibilities on women’s representation in cultural products and their translated versions has become more than evident. This research analyzes how women, feminist, and post-feminist discourses are represented in the Latin American and Peninsular Spanish dubbing of Fleabag. This TV show incorporates, complexifies, and criticises discourses on gender present in mainstream products. The methodological design is based on a qualitative approach with a socio-constructivist perspective, and the techniques applied are content and comparative analysis. The results show that while Latin American Spanish tends to reduce sex-related language and terms that point to oppressive situations addressed from a feminist approach, Peninsular Spanish intensifies these expressions, inserting swear words and language used in feminist discourses that, in some cases, are not present in the original. These findings highlight the complex relationship between AVT, gender discourses, and linguistic and cultural diversity in Spanish-speaking contexts. In addition, the results obtained suggest the need for further reflection and debate on how gender discourses are translated and represented on screen while considering specific audiences and cultural sensitivities. |
Resilient voices in translation : relational sociology and women-led publishing in Iran

| Abstrak | : | Relational sociology suggests that the conventional units of analysis in sociology become a web or network of interactions, moving away from individuals, institutions, communities, and systems as isolated entities. It therefore provides the nexus between macro-sociology and micro-sociology in understanding and promoting change. Drawing upon the emerging notion of social resilience as a relational concept, this paper describes and reflects on the politics of literary publishing through the lens of a woman-led publisher. To this aim, I will take the Iranian publishing house Roshangaran as a case study, in order to investigate their resistance strategies to overcome political/ideological constraints in the period 1997–2013. This period is defined by the transition of power after the presidential election of 2005, when the Conservatives took power following eight years of the Reformists in government. I will also assess the dominant position of translated literature in Iran’s literary market, arguing that translated literature can serve as a synergetic force, giving rise to a resilient discourse of resistance. |
Is feminist translation studies publishing truly international?

| Abstrak | : | Since the turn of the century, there have been increasing calls to expand the field of translation studies to integrate international thinking, conceptualisation, and theorisation. Such initiatives aim to foster greater creativity and new possibilities in various fields by incorporating perspectives from the so-called periphery models and frameworks. Taking this into consideration, this study intends to provide an analysis of the publishing development in the field of feminist translation studies (FTS) based on the information supplied by the Bibliography of Interpreting and Translation database (BITRA).The main focus is to determine the geographic distribution of publications and the languages employed in the development of feminist translation research. What is the status of publishing development in FTS? What trends can be identified in both central and peripheral contexts? Is there a balance between central and peripheral research participation? Is there any evidence of the enlargement of the field in the light of the data obtained from BITRA? This bibliographic review shows the gradual consolidation of the field, with key research hubs in English-speaking countries and growing contributions from Spain, Brazil, and Colombia. However, international publishing remains uneven, with central scholars dominating discussions. Recent interest has spurred more international networks. |
