Abstraksi Narasi : In 1989, European churches assembled in Basel for the first ecumenical meeting oof its kind, an important moment in the World Council of Churches journey to enter into a process of mutual commitment for (JPIP). Four years after the meeting, the author, a Catholic lay representative at Basel, examines the teaching, the shortcomings and the follow-up of this ecumenical assembly. The article considers both the main points of the Basel final document and of the 19909 JPIC Convention in Seoul. Several interventions of the Seoul convention (E. Castro, Cardinal Kim, Fr. Chikana,...) as well as the main affirmations of the seoul document are examined. Both in Basel and in Seoul, the Churches committed themselves to begin to search for concrete ways to promote justice, peace and the integrity of creatio. The response, however, has been poor. At the European level, exteral events and internal issues have slowed down the collaboration started in Basel. More seriously, dialogue among the Churches is threatened by a growing surge of nationalism. Some even speak of an ecumenical winter. In such a dificult context one can but rejoice at the work of the mixed group CEC-CCEE which met in Brussels at the end of 1992. But in spite of the declarations of the leaders, the various Churches ad congregations have not yet taken hold of the opportunity to commit themselves to the major issues and challenges of humankind. After the UNCED`92 summit in Rio, JPIC remains an invitation launched to all Churches: faithfullness to the Gospel as well as the credibility of the Churches are at stake.

Abstraksi Narasi : The article studies present-day difficulties in Poland under three headings: training in democracy, shift towards market economi, religion and State in new surroundings. The progressive instauration of democracy gave rise to enthusiasm. Yet the burden now lies on the new authorities who are blamed for everything. Social initiatives are few. There is a lack of interest for the commond good. The whole society has now to learn the rues and the reality of democracy. In this learning process, the role of the school, and of catechesis, is of prime importance. Changing over to a market economy is a challenge, which the article describes not from an economist`s viewpoint but from the side of the people`s reactions in front of a process in which they are already engaged. Industrial leaders have received marxist training and are not prepared to face a new situation. There is hardly any work ethics. Unemployment is rising, and the appearance of private enterprises widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Former habits of expecting everything from the governement, while at the same blaming it for all evils, are still prevalent, while trade uunions neglect their work of cooperation and education. Faith and life values form a thid area where drastc changes are taking place. The author draws the attention of many points in his analysis: the role of the Church in this process, from 1984 till today; the place of religious education; colaboration between priest and laity; the role of Church in civil matters; theological training; the difficulty for the Church to adjust to a completely new situation, with the rediscovery of freedom, and the surge of anticlericalism. In this context, the model to be encouraged is an , a Church of interpersonal and community relationships. We have to change our thought patterns in politics and economy, concludes to author, and give the State its rightful place in these matters. We also have, priests and laity together, to revise our value systems and manners of living the faith.

Resistances Aux Changements Dans la Slovaquie Actuelle

Abstraksi Narasi : The Slovak society has been deeply influenced by the recent past. There is first of all a deep division of the nation into two groups, believers and unbelievers, and resistances are still being propped up against the Church at the official level, in the media, in the schools. The Church is confronted with a lack of means, and a lack of priests, and suffers from a slow and partial implementation of the orientations of Vatican II. The tools of social analysis are not made use of and committed lay people are few. Slovak people have been, and are still, living in enclosed walls, often invisible but effective. There is a real difficulty to know the true history of the antion. There are damages also in the inner being of the persons. Personal initiatives and individual responsibility, especially regarding common good, are absent. This spiritual and social depression has had repercussions on the life of the Church: Reapperance of clericalism, passiveness in pastoral matters, mistrust towards anything coming from the West. Yet in spite of the shadows, signs of life are visible. We can truly speak of crisis, but it is a growth crisis.

Pourquoi Changer? Pourquoi Resister?

Abstraksi Narasi : Sociologists have always been devided on the question of change, some stressing continuity, others placing the emphasis on transformation. We find the same difficulty in daily life. Are we not people who have to conform but who can also be creative? We often overlook that what appears today unchangeable was at first something spontaneous. What has become custom and is considered as common opinion has one day been invention, innovation. Change is related to transformation but often implies the idea of progress. No one is willing to stop the flow of life, for in the eyes of our contemporaries new is better the old. Generally speakking outside the field of marketing and political propaganda) any change is rooted ina aproblem. Change, or resistance to change, results from the interaction of factors and groups confronted with a problem. In his answer to the question, , the author considers four elements: - 1) social control; - 2) need for security; - 3) protection of established interests and - 4) the incapacity to change The author concludes with a few reflexions, as a member of the Church ad not as a social analyst (for sociologists avoid value judgements). He underlines that two types of questions will have to be answered. First, within the Church, what place is to be given to change and to change and to permanence, i.e. what is absolute and what is relative? Second, what is the form of chage that has to be undergone: adaptation to the changing realities of the world or prophetic attitude towards the world? In the answer to these questions, it is better to go by complementarity rather than by exclusion.

Les Sectes, Nouveaux Mouvements Religieux, et la Nouvelle Religiosite en Europe

Abstraksi Narasi : The article first describes the new religious landscape in Europe, noting the general trends, distinguishing groups issues from Catholicism and movements linked with esoterism and occultism. The New Age is also considered and seen as an expression of a new religious consciousness. NRMs represent only the tip of the iceberg and are but the visible side of something larger, a religious search going in all directions. Why is there such an upsurge today? Many factors have their part to play: secularization of Society, a geneal trend towards withdrawal and spiritual narcissism, etc. The social context surely favours this unprecendented religious boom and modern society provides fertile ground for new religions and cults. A great challenge is addressed to the Churches. How far are pastoral projects adapted to this new situation? Today, believers have to take into account not only unbelief and secularism, but also new religious demands and experiences. Blanket warnings about the dangers of NRMs are of little value. What is required it a better understanding of what these movements are offering and the way in which Christians can respond. Is not the Spirit telling something to the Churches through this new religious consciousness, even under wild and pagan forms? An urgent invitation to rediscover the place and value of the Good News.

Abstraksi Narasi : In this article (published in two parts), the author gives a few orientations and reflexions concerning the problem of evil in the light of the theologies of liberation. At what conditions can we go further and progress in our theological reflexion and fight against evil? The author takes into account six dimensions. First of all, he invites us to safeguard psychic health, for everyone has the right to be happy even those who are deeply involved fighting in justice. The author underlines the importance of the aesthethical dimension, not to dampen our action but to help to see better. Liturgy has similarly to be develloped and be given its full place and value. Eschatology should not be neglected for human history is trans-historical. We are also invited to redefine theo-logy, our discourse about God, and remember that ``pathos`` plays an important role for we are persons with feelings. these are six conditions which allow us to progress in our reflexion on the problem of evil.

La Nouvelle Distinction...: Stereotypes et Perceptions Respectives des Chretiens et Des Athees

Abstraksi Narasi : The article first deals with a few aspects of our social representations and ideological constructions, as well as with resistances to change in order to protect this inner world. The article takes into account the social and the individual aspects along with the cognitive and the conative dimensions. The weaker the identity feeling, the stronger the resistance to change, and conversely. similarly, the more our thinking is informed and equipped, the more it can become independent from shared values and norms, from prevalent ideologies. In the second part of the article, the author shows how this psychic mechanism is being exercised in a particular field: religious representations and reciprocal images of believers and unbelievers. He deals first with stereotypes about atheism (assimilating atheism with amoralism; agnosticism as a static certitude, given once and for all, while it deepens... like faith; etc.), then with stereotypes about belief (the believer`s quest seen as intellectual comfort or consolitaion). For the author, prejudices are dirested less towards faith as such or religius convictions than against clerical institutions and the ideological apparatus, a general mistrust which can be understood in the light of historical circumstances. If the Church is undergoing changes, the free-thinking worlds is also envolving. Fundamentalisme knows no borders, neither does bigotry. Ancient compartmentations are toppling, with the fading of traditional monopolies. Free thinking has no monopoly on free inquiry, neither the Churches on genuine spirituality. Borders are vanishing... to be reconstructed elsewhere.l

Esquisse d`Un Project Culturel: Une Societe Performante Pour Tous

Abstraksi Narasi : The so-called free market is not only destructuring economics and finances but society as a whole. What matters is production, competitiveness, efficiency. Human bengs ae considered as resources for the functioning of a world economic system, a system which excludes the wewakest. However, wonders the author, should it not be possible to move over from a rejecting society to a truly performing society, for the benefit of all. All citizens should be actively involved and we can notice a democratic awakening in different areas:consumption, teaching, ecology, peace movements, information, human rights,... Through their commitment in base groups, citizens refuse to become mere instruments. We live in a ready made world, an off-the-peg society. Human beings however can not live without a cultural project, without taking initiatives or making choices. In one sense we all need utopias. A new field is opening up and it is urgent to start working along the following linves: attention to new initiatives; links between various associations and networks; critical distance from traditional political parties and social organisations; contact with public opinion and sensitization campaigns; maturing and development through action with subsequent readjustment to the real situation; basic questioning of our modern society. The Church herself should be opened to questions by those who raise concrete issues rather than constantly repating moral principles. Sensitivity to social problems remains a must as is a Christian presence in social initiatives. The Churches will develop along their own calling inasmuch as they too learn from the victims of society. It not this right direction for a New Evangelization?

Abstraksi Narasi : The world around us is changing.. and so is catechesis, not without resistances however, at the institutional and personal levels. The article wants to track down resistances to change in catechesis, resistances overhanging as it were the new cultural environment. It does not deal with the content of catechesis-which is another matter-but considers its organization. In the first part of the article, the author tries to size up today`s cultural changes which transform the attitude towards religion and the set-up for handing on faith (religion being considered now as a freedom platform; indecision and wait-and see attitude; the God question; autonomy of the religious field; recognition of the Church`s place; christian symbolic rites, etc). The second part of the articles sketches; to accept gracefully not to be in control of everything; to plan for long-term policies). Finally the author underlines a few fundamental orientations to overcome a triple inertia (to promote the practice of religious freedom; reinforce community catechesis and give due place to adult Christian initiation).
