L`Apport de l`Experience Avec Ceux Qui ne Peuvent Pas Suivre

Abstraksi Narasi : In 1987, an international colloquium was held in Quebec on the contribution of the catechesis with children ``who can not follow". This was an occasion to take stock of achievements in this field and also to shed light on the transformations taking place when one works with such childrens. Indeed, one does not remain unaffected in the relationship process. It is not just a question of renewing one`s notions but of discovering the self in order to meet the other. Encountering the disabled can lead either to domination or to disintegration. In order to avoid these pitfalls, one must take three dimensions into account. First, the quality of attentiveness given to experience, itself leading to the discovery of the value of each person. Second, the ability to express the meaning of such an experience, meaning inscribed on the consciousness under the impact of this very experience. We are thus led to take into account the whole person (body, heart and spirit), to give pride of place to the symbolic dimension and to let come to consciousness the meaning and import of what is experienced. Third, the mentally handicapped person questions the fact that, in our world, conceptual meaning is being substituted for symbolic interaction. But the conceptual expression of faith is not its first and most essential language. What comes first, on the contrary, is life, experience, practice. dogmatic systems should not obfuscate the symbolic dimension of experience, which is the point of reference.

Abstraksi Narasi : Appointed Archbishop of Chicago in 1982, Archbishop Bernardin wanted the people of his diocese to become aware that developmentally disabled people need nourishment for their spiritual life as well as opportunities to give glory to God. These people, says the Archbishop, have the right to live in, and to be welcomed into, all areas of life. In particular they have the right to be baptised and welcoming attitude, Cardinal Bernardin issued, on All Saints Day 1985, pastoral guidelines for the Archdiocese of Chicago regarding ``Access to the Sacraments of Initiation and Reconciliation for Developmentally Disabled Persons``. Copies of the text may be ordered from Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60622, U.S.A.

La Sensibilite Religieuse de la Personne Handicapee Mentale

Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Lumen: A Journal of Catholic Studies
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 165-174
Abstraksi Narasi : The article is based on the work and reflections of a pastoral team in a residential facility. Very quickly one gets confronted with developmental disability and questions come up. Is it really worthwhile? Are the handicapped persons open to the religious dimension and, if yes, how to proceed? The author mentions first the necessary conditions for faith experience and spiritual life, stressing the religious quality of the environment and the necessity to go to the core of faith. One has to take into account certain limitations on the cognitive level and be aware that their spiritual understanding is of an affective-intuitive type. The ususal means of evoking the spiritual are recollection and dialogue coupled with the use of symbols. Even if the understanding remains limited on the cognitive level, yet the religious experience of the developmentally disabled persons is not without value. To work along these lines can not be done without active and -personal involvment of all those concerned, for a lot depends on the persons who, as it were, makes God present.

La Personne Avec un Handicap Est Source de Vie

Abstraksi Narasi : From exlusion to presence, such was the theme of the 25th anniversary of the foundation of L`Arche. Giving a personal testimony, Jean Vanier shows how much developmentally disabled persons force us to revise our ideas about being human, to discover that competition and agressiveness must be subordinated to love, solidarity, communion. disabled persons are not just the receivers of our philanthropy or of our professional competence. They are not a problem to be solved. They are persons who have their place in our society. Without them,an imbalance is created. The rest of the body is cut off from an important, even a necessary. It is something necessary. These eyes, the heart, the body of the disabled, their cry for tenderness awaken what is best in us. They introduce us to a new world. Yet, this is a conscious choice, an option to be made a new everyday. In this choice, an option to be made anew everyday. In this choice we can rely on the God of mercy and life who wants to lead us from exclusion to presence.

Droit des Enfants et des Adultes a Une Education Religieuse

Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 175-182
Abstraksi Narasi : Normally religious education is given to children because of the parent`s wish and under their responsibility. Here and there however difficultties can arise. What happens when the parents disagree amongst themselves? What to do, when there is conflict between the parents and the children on such a question? What happens when father and mother are separated and the child is placed in an institution? What are the rights of handicapped people living in group homes or residential facilities? Situations differ greatly from country to country, according to religions and cultures. The article gives a few guiding principles. The author first discusses the religious freedom of the children? Is there such a thing as the right of the child to freedom of thought, religion and conscience? He examines the existence of a ``religious majority`` on the line of the ``civil majority`` and whether legal provisions should be introduced. The existence f conflicts between parents and children is discussed and also the religious or moral education of adolescents in residential care. Finally the author recalls some principles with regard to appropriate religious life and spiritual services.

Bouleverse-moi Par ta Vie: Le Rencontre Entre Jeunes et Personnes Handicapess

Nomor Halaman : 183-192
Abstraksi Narasi : The article gives a fefw converging testimonies: for young people to have the opportunity to meet and to live with physically or mentally disabled ppersons is undeniably a trying as well as an enriching experience. These reflections are made by young people and young adults who are concerned to give the disabled their place in the Church and in society. Their reflections are based on personal encounters, beacause the person comes before the stereotype. They want to share what they have received on the personal, relational and spritual level. On the personal level, because meeting the handicapped person helps to discover one`s own weaknesses and resources. On the relational level, because the disabled person, like any of us, is crying for relation and invites us to go beyond differences to meet the other in truth. On the spiritual level, for the true and intense relationshipn with the disabled person had led some, mysteriously and paradoxically, to a foretaste of God`s love for each one of us, to the discovery that life is truly a gift. Yet it is not ``revealed truth`` for all and there are many ways to make similar discoveries.

Affectivite et Relation en Catechese

Nomor Halaman : 155-163
Abstraksi Narasi : Affectivity is an important element in catechesis because catechesis is relational and every relationship has an affective aspect. However if the affective dimension is at times downplayed by catechists, it is often given undue emphasisn with disabled children. Affectivity gives original colouring to the buiding of personality. It is important to recognize the role and importance of affectivity in order to adopt the right educative attitude and to be attentive to the quality of the relationship which is established with the children. A right balance must be found: if the relationship is based only on the affective element, it will waver between love and hatred. If the affective connotation is evacuated, how can sharing and transmission of faith take place? If not mastered, affectivity can lead to dead ends or to illusions, like symbiotic relationships, overprotection, lack of autonomy, infantilism. To recognise the role and place of affectivity does not prevent the adult setting educational demands, with disabled children and with the others. In catechesis as much as in other areas, disabled children lead us to take into account the whole person: heart, body and spirit. Such an encounter with disability is not without trials and dificulties but handicapped people often help us to discern what is essential in our life as well as in our faith.

Acceueillir Xavier, Notre Enfant Trisomique

Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 131-141
Abstraksi Narasi : In a personal manner, the author relates what the arrival of Xavier, their third child, has meant for her and the family. Having a child with Down`s syndrome at first shatters all dreams. Gradually however she discovered that happiness is still possible, thanks to unity and love in the couple, to the presence of the other children, but also thanks to Xavier himself. Xavier has not only transformed their lives, but transfigured them. Yes, says Xavier has not only transformed their lives, but transfigured them. Yes, says his mother, we need Xavier because he taught us to go straight to what is essential, to discover a new the beauty of life, to live in the present moment. Who can really judge the value of human life? Without making us change values, the handicapped child sheds another light on human existence in as much as he invites us to go deeeper into our relationship with God. This does not mean that everything is without problem and that difficulties vanish. All the worries and troubles remain present but life nevertheless appears full of promise. Xavier himself has guided but life nevertheless appears full a promise. Xavier himself has guided us on the path as much as we have helped him.

``Passer`` Par le Doute

Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 91-98
Abstraksi Narasi : Doubt is part of the life of faith. Yet it is often perceived as something bad or shameful, something that should not happen. For young people, doubt is seen as a time when faith is being lost, while faith is always received. The article helps catechists and reminds believers that such a critical moment is unavoidable given the paschal dimension of life. Doubt is a meeting point with oseself, with God, with the others, a challenging moment. In the elucidation process the author distinguishes four steps: 1. To spot exactly were the trouble lies, the dangers and ferars. What is meant by doubt? 2. To evaluate what is happening and to try to discover adequate answer and not just transquilizers. 3. To place oneself in the midst of a people which knows its frailty and the ``nights`` of faith, a Passover people. 4. To go beyond individualism: not simply look at oneself in a looking glass but join the family of those who have place their trust in God, those who go from uncertainly not to certitude but to faith.

Science, Foi et Societe Aujourd`hui

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Lumen: A Journal of Catholic Studies
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 29-40
Abstraksi Narasi : For a long time, science and faith were not distinct. But gradually, in order to avoid conflicts, a clear distinction came to be made between the two realms of science and faith which were then considered as two different, if complementary, views of the same reality. Such a situation however was not without difficulties and oppositions were more frequent than alliances. Today, in terms of content, the relationship between science and faith remains connflictual. The necessary distinction should not prevent us working out an articulation within certain limitations and in such a way that science and faith can complement one another. The limits of science (especially the reductive character of its methodology, the provisory nature of its affirmations,...) open uo a space for faith and if we consider religious discourse at the level of symbolic and performative language, this attitude gives scope for the development of science. The respective limits of science and faith lead to several types of articulation: the distinction of discourses and domains but also mutual and dynamic interpellations and above all the sharing of a common situation and destiny. For science and faith share the same responsibility and hence the articulation is not epistemological but rather practical and ethical. Scientists and believers are thrown into the same adventure; they are called to build a common future. In this endeavour both the scientist and the believer are first of all human beings called to search for and to create a better world. In practise, this type of interrelatedness is already at work for there is nothing like ``pure science`` (there are scientists doing scientific work, of whom some are believers) and similarly ``pure faith``, i.e. a faith without content, is impossible. There is a constant interplay and in many ways we find is science and faith the same objective approach. Working out the relations between science and faityhy today should not be done in an abstract theoretical way but by examining the way people, believers and scientists, think and act.
