| Abstraksi Narasi | : | More tha ever people have to understand the media world. Because of the technological evolution, TV viewers should show a sense of responsibility in their attitude towards mass media. Media education is a privileged means to wider freedom of choice, to master audiovisual clture, to strengthen democracy and develop ethical concerns. The Church has the vocation and the ability to render important service to society in this field. For a long time indeed she has developed a pedagogical competence through schools, parishes, movements, and she can contribute initiating a responsible attitude towards the media. Catechesis canot neglect the use of the visual language. But catechists should also speak about the responsibility of Christians towards the audio-visual: norms of evaluation and attitudes to be acquired in this field should become part ofthe basic training of all Christians. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The author starts with a warning: there is no such thing as ``today`s youth`` for youth does not constitute a hmogeneous sociological reality. He will thus speak from his experience with problem adolescents and marginal youth from homes in the CAen area and greater Paris. what has really changed in the values of today`s youth? The article considers three main areas and underlines the following features: a deep anguish in the face of happiness, for young people are incapable of figuring out the future which appears moving and uncertain; a relationship to others which is slowed down by individualism, fr the time of the great commitments (be it in politics, social life or in the Church) is over; a way of living in the present, in the instantaneous. However these shifts should not blind us to what remains basic: the need to get a job and to obtain a place in the production world, as well as the possibility of founding a family. Some values still run high, as for example the acceptance of differences in all areas, the need for authenticity, the resect for the environment, and finally solidarity. These values are differently lived than yesterday, especially if we keep in mind the real crisis concerning the global meaning of life. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | At the end of the encyclical Veritatis Splendor, mention is made of divine mercy towards those who do not fulfil the human duty as outlined in the Gospel message, but the text also reminds us that human weakness can never jeopardize or falsify the ethical law by adjusting its exigencies to circumstances or to human frailty. The author raises the question if it should not be possible, and evendesirable, to go further by developing what he calls ethics of the feasible, ethics which is an expression of mercy in situations marked by powerlessness and imperfections of human condition, without at the same time giving up the radicalness of the christian ethics, and thus formulate a morality of the ``full meaning``, a morality of what is humanly expected. Evil remains evil, but this does not forbid mercy towards the sinner. Moreover a sinner is not always subjectively culpable. There is no question for the author to do away with the Gospel demands. On the contrary if the author wishes to offer an ethic of mercifulness it is in order to lead people to salvation and to foster what is humanly possible, in concrete situations of dependency and vulnerability. The author proposes to use the category of minus bonum to develop his argument, analyzing the cases of non marital cohabitation, divorce, homosexuality. How does one accompany people in their ethical efforts, without rigid authoritarianism and without taking a lax attitude? By offering ethical guidelines or orientations which are based on what is concretely possible. The first word of the Gospel is not morality or law but grace and redemption. Such an approach of what is cocretely attainable, even up to accompanying the illicit, is a difficult task, but one which, in the secularized and pluralist Western society, is most important for the Church today. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | During three years, representatives from various Christian organisations (gathered in the CGAL, an assembly of about a hundred Catholic institutions, movements and services) came together to discuss issues concerning bio-ethics. The article describes the process of reflection which pursued three aims: 1). to help reaching grounded convictions on difficult questions where no ready made answer is available; 2). to publish widely the result of this reflection as the expression of the opinion of the people f God; 3). to confront the viewpoints of lay people engaged in the pastoral field with the texts of the Magisterium. An interesting and original contribution to the ethical debate. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | For the first time, thanks to the researches f te European Value Study Foundation, we are able to follow changes in values in most of the countries of the Western World. From the ethical viewpoint, not everything is black or white. As one would expect, freedom and equality are two of the basic values underlined. The stress on freedom implies also individual fulfilment. Thetrends towards greater permissiveness but alsoas a sig of a new consciousness and an awareness of the complexity of individual conscience. Permissiveness in the field of bio-ethics and sexual morality is growing, but the family as a value is rated high. In western Europe, great importance is still given to the police, the school system, and social security, while institutions-like the army and the Church-are less trusted than before. One can also notice a change in attitudes towards faith content and beliefs in God. Age is an important item in the attitude scales but one must also take into account the cultural and historical context: national identity plays a significant role in the shaping of values, as well as religious affiliation ( Catholic or Protestant tradition). Globally religion is on the decline but values fostered by the Churches (such as the family, justice, altruism, anti-racism,...) remain important. The gap is reater concerning sexuality and traditional beliefs (resurrection, belief in a personal God). |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | In a postmodern society, the place of ethics and of morality is not easily perceived any more. These areas do not enjoy the stability which was theirs in traditional society, or even in the recent past. In such a context, the author provides a few guidelines to help us to consider ethical issues. He examines what the ethcal debate is about and the manner in which principles, norms and a particular rationality are produced. Concentrating on the question of foundations, he shows how this question is dependent on the images of God and on his relationships with human beings. He finally considers the way in which a rational debate can be built up in the ethical field along the model offered by scientific development. He thus opens a path which enables an understanding of ethics and its historical relativity, without falling into relativism. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Lipovetsky is surely one of the best analysts of modern society. Already a few year ago, in his book L`ere du vide, he foresaw that triumphant individualism would not necessarily generate anarchy, or the loss of any moral reference but would rather generate the advent of a new society. In a recent book, Le crepuscule du devoir, he takes up again and deepens his analysis. The twilight of duty, of abnegation and of obedience ( especially in the field of sexuality) does not mean the end of morality. New rules are coming up, taboos are transformed, ancient values rediscovered. The book deserves to be noticed for its original perspectives and wide documentation. The subtitle, ``Painless Ethics in New Democratic Times``, expresses well that far from leading to an opaque and endless night, morality surfaces again and restores new values. Yet, wonders the reviewer, does not Lipovetsky underestimate true dimensions of the human heart and of his earthly condition? Does he sufficiently tae into account the tragic side of human life? |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Our pupils live in a complex world, but as educators we realize that they are sensitive to the question of morality and that they want to discuss ethical issues. The article comments on ethics at school under three aspects. - First the author discusses the aim and training objectives which the school should define, cosidering that its educative role also concerns the awaening of moral conscience. Three aims are considered: care for self (linked with esteem), care for the other (solicitude), and care for the institution (the ability to live together). In the classroom, one could discuss otions such as law, norms, values, conscience, but in any case oe should consider among the training objectives the undersstanding of the various facets of moral life as well as its complexity. -Second, the author offers a frame of reference ( according to the see-judge-actpattern) which should help one to analyze a given situation, to perceive the references underlying moral behaviour and perhaps to draw orientations for action. -Third, he examines the specificity of the CAtholic school by discussing the link between our behaviour and what we say about the God of Jesus Christ, especially during religious education classes. Religious education should not be mistaen for moral education, but unavoidably incldes an ethical dimension. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The article, a transcript of a lecture delivered on the fourth anniversary of the murder of Fr Ellacuria and his companions, centres on the theoretical contribution to the study of human rights made by Ignacio Ellacuria. Fr Ellacuria wanted human rights to be verified in concrete reality as soon as they were proposed, then only formulated and organically arranged from a correct epistemological locus, and finally realized in a subsequent and gradual way in our conflictive historical praxis. For him, the question of human rights coul thus be studied along three axes: 1) the epistemological problem of truth without interested mystification, for too often theories and declarations about human rights do not take into account the real condition of people; 2) the ethical problem of justice without undue privileges which is linked with the question of the common good of humankind; 3) and finally the political problem of the possibility of their gradual and just application, i.e.the necessity and the means of putting into practice what is theoretically proposed. Through his violent death, the theory developed by Fr Ellacuria was put into practice and transformed into a prophecy of his life. But, concludes the author, the death of those who fight for liberation is perceived as a source of hope by all those who witness their martyrdom. |
