Abstraksi Narasi : Fear can be a good starting point for reflection in the ethical field. Such is the insight of Hans Jonas in his book das Prinzip Verantwortung (the Principle responsibility). Indeed many data from life are recognized as values when they are threatened or in danger of being suppressed. Then fear for engenders responsibility. This is not just anxiety or pusillanimity. Far from being a fear that paralyses, it provokes action. A fear which is not just imaginary or pathological but is founded on seriouus prediction and which can help in such fields such as ecology, biology, medical research, economical trends. In all these fields, it clear that when we perceive that something is at stake, we also become conscious of what is at stake. Often values are hidden but they reveal their price when the are endangered. The ethics of Hans Jonas does not cover the whole of ethics but it is a firm foundation for moral reflection.

Abstraksi Narasi : The Gospel mentions the temptation of Jesus at the beginnning of his ministry. As other Gospel passages confirm (Lk 11, 29; Mt 16,22-23; 22, 17-21), the temptations are eal and underline the basic options and orientations of his ministry: Jesus refuses a social messianism which would answer the immediate need for bread; he also rejects the royal messianism which would establish the Kingdom of God through political power and a religious messianism based on wonders and prodigies. Three main areas are thus covered (``every temptation``): economy, politics, culture. three basic needs-to stay alive, to have relations, to find meaning-which can be linked to basic fears, all rooted in the fear of death : fear of lacking the needful, fear of violence from the others, fear of one`s own human limitations. Reading through the Gospel, one discovers that on all these points, Jesus takes the opposite of generally shared values. But he also helps people to overcome fear. Jesus fights against temptation by a new relationship with God. Liberation from fear come from utter confidence in God, a confidence which does not allow one to temp God. Fear is thus mastered, but not necessarily dispelled. And if fear does not vanish, it does not imprison any more.

Abstraksi Narasi : Mass media often project images of ourselves. At times they offer images of a certain type of reality, but hey also set the stage for our most imagnary dreams and aspirations. What place should we give the media in our lives? The question has been the suject of many debates. The article discusses how media affect and modify our identity. In a media world, space, time and social links are modified. Moreover one has to take into account the expectation of the viewers. Experience also tells us (see the Timisoara events or the Gulf war) that the line between information and manipulation is thin. The Interational Federation of Journalists had nonetheless ratified the Chart of Journalism (Istanbul, 1972). Mass media not only provide information but also intertainment. The author examines a new type of entertainment: reality shows. What are the links between reality and fiction? Finally some suggestions are sffered so that the audience does not remain a passive consumer but becomes a critical user.

De la Peur Qui Enchaine a la Crainte Qui Delivre Catherine de Sienne (1347-1380)

Abstraksi Narasi : The article does not speak about the great Italian mystic n general terms, neither does it recall the historical circumstances of her life, but discusses the theme of fear in the Letters and in the Dialogue. For Saint Catherine, freedom from fear flows from a mystical experience. Catherine of Sienna knew fear, in herself and in the others. But for her there is a basic difference between servile fear and holy fear. She invites all, civic and religious, leaders to reject servile and blind fear but at the same tme to retrain filial and true fear. How to go beyond fear? For Catherine, the answer will be found in Christian anthropology. Everything else is an alibi, a temporary measure. Catherine invies people to go beyond, to be free from self-love and to open to the love of God opens up the human heart to strength from above.

Abstraksi Narasi : At first sight, the book of Amos is not the place where one would look for Old TEstament references about fear. Yet Amos foretells the coming of an important evet in the history of the chosen people: the destruction of Israel and its exile in a foreig land. The fall of the Northern Kingdom is the historical ad theological moment when the people and its institutions are not only confronted to a death threst but are actually undergoing a radical and ultimate trial. To read the short book of Amos with the particular viewpoint of fear gives a good idea of what fear means to the people of the Bible. The role of the prophet is to raise fear (with various images such as lion, trap, earthquakes, plagues, war, death) and to lead them to the conversion needed to escape from danger. The drama of the prophet lies precisely there: Israel does not want to listen to him. Through God`s punishment however the people shall understand and discover the fear of the Lord, through which one can overcome all fears.

Nomor Halaman : 39-49
Abstraksi Narasi : The sacraments of initiation are an important aspect of the work of high school (Lycee or College) chaplaincy. For the last few years the sacrament of confirmation has been given special emphasis. The reception of the sacrament is being proposed to youth who have attained a certain level of Chriatian maturity and many students coming to the Chaplaincy have not received baptism or have not been catechized. Preparing for the sacrament is an important aspect of the work of the ``Aumonerie``. The author describes how it is being done in the diocese of Laval (France) and offers reflections on the objectives, the choices made, the place of the accompanying adults. The programme comprises seven successive steps and spreads on a school year: getting acquainted; understanding the person of Christ; God the Father; acknowledging the presence and the work of the Holy Spirit; discovering the Church; the Creed; preparing he celebration itself.

Nomor Halaman : 23-26
Abstraksi Narasi : One might think that in a war situation pastoral life is being silenced or played down. The example of Maya communities, who have joined armed resistance in the Guatemala mountains, shows us that it is not so. On the contrary, sacramental life-in this case, children`s baptism-takes on a new meaning. The sacrament received in time of trial and tribulation purifies the faith and restores man in his dignity as son of God.

Saint Domingue: Une Quete d`Identite

Abstraksi Narasi : Would the Santo domingo Conference remain in the line of Medellin and Puela or call a halt, and possibly lead to a pre-conciliar drawback? The question is vital for the future of pastoral practice and heological reflection in Latin America. Before answering, the author places the evet in its historical cotext. One can measure with him the particular weight of this 500th anniversary. The preparation as bben long and laborious. Two different aproaches to the issues were soon ad laborious. Two different approaches to the issues were soon noticed. Clearly, the approach from the Vatican curia would start from doctrine and principles, while the Latin-American episcopate was more inductive, leaning on pastoral practice. Critical of the procedures during the meeting, the author thinks nevertheless that the content of the document eventually carries a message of hope. Indeed it encourages new evangelization in our land as well as the integral promotion of the Latin-american people and of the Caribbean people. It also promotes the inculturation of the Gospel. In continuity with the pastoral options of Medellin and Puela, and the preferential option for the poor, ``evangelical and renewed``, is reaffirmed.

L`Initiation Flottante Chez les Jeunes: Tension Entre le Formel et L`Informel

Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Lumen: A Journal of Catholic Studies
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 29-38
Abstraksi Narasi : In half a century, the social context has been modified, to a such point that family, school, work are not seen any more as places and times for socialization. A new model replaces the ancient one: it is not any more hierarchic, strongly structured and authoritarian but flexible and based on negotiation. The emergence of the autonomy of the individual and the mosaic character of culture have deprived traditional institutions of their normative traits. Yesterday, initiation was very rigid and formal, today it is more supple. It has shifted, specially in a time when adolescence is being prolonged and always spent in a school environment, towards the peer group. It has also been diluated under the omnipresent influence of the media. In these few pages, the author offers rich sociological data, with nuances and accuratess. Each paragraph, be it about family, school, or peer group, can nourish personal reflection and give rise to discussion. Suggestions are being hinted at and an access is being opened to the often disconcerting youth culture. The adults, considered as references, are given an important role in new ``interstitial``spaces.

L`Initiation

Nomor Halaman : 11-21
Abstraksi Narasi : Today one can be initiated into anything and everything: into the mysteries of computer science, of French, of Buddhism, etc. To reflect on initiation on has to learn from history and replace instances or procedures into their context. The term ``initiation`` and its practice come from antiquity, more precisely from the mystery religions. in its widest meaning, initiation means a passage, a change which affects the person thus initiated in his/her innermost being. The person beig initiated has to pass through threee main steps. First, there is a break: one leaves the ancient world. there is also a time of trial: confrontation with fear, suffering and death, out of which one emerges stronger. Through the final step, rebirth, one enters into a new world. The author shows that, in western societies, initiation works according toa different pattern. What is prevalent in our functional universe is a learning process. While the initiatory process tends to unify and to incorporate the person into the community, our idea of belonging is plural, our commitments are fragmented. Nevertheless, there remains in the heart of our contemporaries a nostalgia. Such a desire allows us to affirm that initiation is resilient, haunts our imagination and finds new forms. A reality which pastoral workers should not disregard.
