La Catechese des 8-12 Ans en France: Quelques Grands Axes

Abstraksi Narasi : Children`s catechesis in France is based on the official Reference Text (RT), written for the authors of text-books and catechesis directors. The article emphasises five key-ideas of the RT, and also a few inevitable limitations and questions. 1. There is a great variety of itineraries (Parcours) all f which conform to the RT. They give a general frae of reference and act, as it were, as a tourist guide. An is not a textbook. The book Pierres Vivantes (Living Stones) does not only offer ready-made material but a set of documents for an active use by teachers, parents and children. The variety corresponds to the different needs and situations. 2. The RT also emphasises the importance of the place of catechesis. Catechesis cannot be divorced from the experience of a Chistian community. Incidentally, we can note that catechesis has been an opportunity for the parents to get involved and to rediscover their own faith. 3. Our world is evolving and catechesis takes place in a given cultural context. Catechists know this, but are they attentive enough to the importance of cultural change in the perception of faith and morals? 4. The RT insists that religious education must be based on an active pedagogy, so that faith reaches the child in all the dimensions of his life: intelligence, memory, feelings, body,... 5. Finally, the RT gives an important place to prayer and liturgical celebration, in small groups-but also in larger ones with parents and other adults. A good survey of catechesis in France today.

Abstraksi Narasi : Ferdinand Verbist is little known. Yet the rich personality of this Jesuit missionary has caught the attention of the official Chinese Dictionary of Social Sciences. Born in Pittem (?west Fladers), Verbiest left for China in 1656. After an eventful journey, he reached Macao in 1658. Two years later he was in the capital where his competence as an astronomer was quickly recognized. Appointed director of the Imperial Observatory, he produced an incredible amount of publications on physics, medecine, astronomy (including his Kang Xi Perpetual Astrolnomy in 32 fascicles, giving the movements of the moon and the planets, including the ellipses for the next 2000 years), geographical maps, and also a Manchu grammar and any religious works about the Christian faith. As can be seen from a letter sent to the Pope-requesting permission the say the Mass with head covered, as a sign of respect, and to have the liturgy in Mandarin-, he had clearly understood that evangelization does not mean westernization. He also invited other Jesuits to join him in China and, in this endeavour, worked to find a route to Peking via Moscow. When Verbiest died in 1688, the Kang Xi Emperor made a public eulogy of the catholic priest. Four years later the Chinese were afficially allowed to become Christians and to open places of worship.

Abstraksi Narasi : The article presents the RE programme prepared by a Diocesan group from Namur (Belgium). There are four stages to the programme (3-7yrs, 7-8`s, 8-0`s and 10-12`s) as follows: 1. To open the child to the presence of God, by using Bible storiesand through a firstm initiation into prayer. 2. To assist the children to regard things and beings in anew way thanks to the World who gives meaning and becomes a source of action. Four pointers are to be found on the way: the lives of the saints, the cultural setting in which Jesus lived, the practice of sacramental life-especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation-, an introduction to the art of living. 4. To focus the attention of the child on the person of Jesus Christ, , to help the child to hear the call of this same Jesus Christ who leads us to the Father in the Spirit, both in his personal life and in the Church. Four terms sum up the stages briefly described: to open, to assist, to lead, to focalize.

Abstraksi Narasi : Symbolic biblical catechesis starts from the Bible as history and story. It speaks to our experience. It is oriented towards the prayer of the Church in the sacraments and the liturgy. In the first part, the authors try to uncover a welath of experience through three key words; imaginative narrative, exploring the link which exists between a speaker and what he tells; word level which examines the deep impact of the narrative on chidren and adults, the semi-conscious link we have with words an images; exiatential appropriation through which the narrative sheds light on life, the Bible is related to our experience and becomes truly the Word of God. In the second part, five steps are recognised in the child`s listening to the World. 1. In the discovery of faith, the role of memory is a crucial importance for the child (from age 4 onward). 2. Very quickly the child learns to cmpare stories which are using similar images. 3. Around 9, he develops a critical spirit and wants to know the of the inspired texts. This critical step isessential for a maturing of faith. 4. The child also learns to understand the double meaning of words and the figurative use of language. He has to discover this on his own, through a learning process which must be given in religious education, and to gradually understand the symbolic dimension of human existence. 5. Finally, the adolescent is helped to discover a correspondence between what he hears from the Church and what he perceives and says on his own. Symbolic biblical catechesis, as presented by the authors, wants to do precisely this: while taking into account the data of psychology and the chil`s experience, to communicate the Word through a progressive discovery of its essential quality.

Abstraksi Narasi : Considering that a teaching relationship is established around three terms-knowlwedge, the teacher, the pupils-the author describes three main pedagogical models. The expository model centers on the knowledge of the teacher and its transmission. The animation model gives first place to the experiences and ressources of the children. The learning model considers the active relationship of the pupils to a knowledge or a know-how which they must make their own. The better teacher is the one who makes the pupils work best. This last model is best suited for religious education. It also takes into account Tradition and its personal reappropriation by the children. Using this model, the teacher must be attentive to the fact that the child is full of images and ideas through which he perceives and interprets everything around him: God, the world, the Church, others, etc. The teacher should be attentive to the expression of those images, their analysis and possible shifts of emphasis, because of the appearance of new images, gained from the cultural environment as well as from Scripture and Church tradition. Four steps are proposed in this process: expression, analysis, confrontation, re-expression.

Abstraksi Narasi : We have only been speaking of for the last forty years. In the beginning, the expression meant religious instruction given by the parents. Gradually it became faith education of the children through and within the family. Family catechesis refers to a great variety of situations, according to the age of the children and the involvement of the parents, often the mothers. To help the parents, structures have to be set up. Indeed, if the parents are left alone they quickly give up. So there are resource groups, written documents, parents` meetings, prayer celebrations. There are difficulties: some parents are not ready to get involved (due to lack of time, qualification, matrimonial status, etc.) and find it difficult to discuss religious issues with their childen. In this case, it is possible to organise a kind of sponsoring by another family. There is no denying that family catechesis is firmly established and gradually spreading. In order to keep the trend alive, we must be attentive to a few points: take into account the charging family patterns and establish new modes of collaboration, keep in touch with order educational networks (schools, youth movements), maintain the link with and receive support from the Christian community. Catechesis in the family is slowly becoming catechesis of the family.

Abstraksi Narasi : Francoise and Pierre pray regularly with their seven children. The impact of prayer on their life is such than in spite of the many difficulties they are not ready to do away with a daily family prayer. The family is not a monastery, but prayer and the sacraments help us to live under God`s care. Wednesday is kept for the parents while Friday is reversed for the family. Next to those two high points, there is also place to meet others and to remain open to the langer dimension, while always keeping in one`s heart the desire to share Jesus Christ. For Cecile and Hubert, faith must be breathed in the home like the aor around us. They answer the questions of their children, they with them every evening following the liturgical year. They are persuaded that much of the faith they would like for their four children is given them by the tesmony of their life as Christian parents (with timely remarks from the children: >). Their children are still small but they hope that in this way they are laying the foundations for a genuine and full Christian life after the difficulties of adolescence.

La Transmission de la Foi au Sein de la Famille

Abstraksi Narasi : A series of reflexions on the transmission of faith, without concealing the questions and difficulties. Many parents(or grand-parents) and Church leaders are ipressed by a general disinterest in faith and the inadequate response of the believing community. But faith transmission is a complex process. One should not insist too heavily on the role of the family. Yet if Christ means something to the parents, they are called to awaken their children to faith and prepare them to be ale to give a personal faith response. In our reflexions, we have to take into account new models and structures of the family. The parents cannot leave aside their own faith and life: many things are shared with the childen through the simple events of daily life. Parents should also keep in touch with the greater community the Church. The ecclesial dimension is often neglected because it raises questions specially on two issues: the value and meaning of the sacraments, the idea of a new evangelization. To put too much stress on the place and role of the family in the new evangelization can be misleading (too great an emphasis on individuaistic trends? a desire on the part of the Hierarchy to keep some power over families?). Yet undoubtedly the family remains a place where the Gospel is heard and lived, even if it not the only place.

Abstraksi Narasi : Founded by Jean Vanier is Trosly-Breuil (France) in 1964, l`Arche has grown to include many communities world-wide representing over two hundred family-like homes. The aim of l`Arche it to welcome persons suffering from a mental handicap. L`Arche, the Ark-Noah`s Ark-, is a symbol of refuge, diversity and hope. Many who come to l`Arche as assistants, come for its community spirit, to help the mantally disabled or for the simplicity of its life. Soon hey discover or rediscover the Gospel. How is it that such a life style also opens wide the door to the Good News? Perhaps because in l`Arche the abnormal becomes normal. Here welcoming everyone makes you realize that you also can love and be loved. In these communities, it is the disabled who welcome the assistants and give them what we all need: reasons to live, to believe, to hope and to love. The Good News is proclaimed to the poor. This Goespel sentences is a call, yes, but much more-a gift. More and moore, concludes the author-who has been living in a community for the last ten years-my eyes are opened to the privilege of being welcomed personally among the benficiaries of the Good News, the poor. .

Abstraksi Narasi : Confronted with changing family values and patterns, the Church in Latin America draws suggestions from the Bible for a new evangelization of the family. The experience of family life with its joys and difficulties becomes the heart of our catechesis and one discovers the family dimension of the sacraments. The author proposes new resources for a first Christian initiation of the children at home and suggests a better collaboration between parents and teachers with regard to Christian education in the early stages. A special effort is being made successfully on the occasion of the first communion, through a family catechesis which involves the parents direstly. Similiarly at the time of adolescence, catechesis should involve the parents in an appropriate way. Finally, the author gives several suggestions for celebrations of the Word (on biblical themes) to support family catechesis.
