| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The democratic reputation of the French Protestants of the reformed tradition has long been established. However, it is useful to analyse this reality in greater depth. Jean-Francois Zorn first delves into the history of the Reformation in Europe, an din particular in France, to show that though it is not inherenttly democratic, the Protestant notion of universal priesthood paved the way for the pinciple of universal suffrage, which is a lay (or secular) concept that is fundamental to democracy. Since the time of the Reformation, the realtionship of French Protestants with democracy and republicanism has grown ever deeper and has become an integral part of their culture. The author shows how, by means of three forms of involvement, namely the public school, social outreach (or diakonia) and overseas missions, french Protestants introduced their democratic principles into their evangelical way of thinking, believing, and acting. |

As a result, the ``Interdiocesan Council of Laity``, which brings together the several different strands within the Catholic world in french-speaking Belgium, decided to issue a `` Manifesto for a new citizen culture``, aimed at expressing a voice inspired by the Gospel and Christian tradition. The questions of how this Manifesto came to be drawn up, its eneral themes, and the impact it may be expected to have, are the subjects of this article, which, it is hoped, will inspire similiar measures elsewhere. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Regardless of way of life, the dignity of each human being is inalienable. Sometimes, crushed by misery, people take refuge in drugs or in alcohol. They gradally detach themselves from the society around them, and forget their dignity as human beings. The non-profit oranization Thermos, by means of a night shelter and a meal service, seeks to meet these marginalized people. Its goal is to restore teir self-confidence and their awareness of their human dignity. The organization also seeks to give people within mainstream society the opportunity, by means of contact and dialogue in a setting of mutual respect, to become consciious of the distress of those who are exluded from daily life. In addition, it wishes to challenge public authorities on the matter of ``exclusion``. The organization includes more than 200 volunteers who, by means of these activities, have the chance to rediscover the fundamental values of our humanity. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The author proposes a rearticulation of ``democratic values`` and of Christian memory. In the first instance, religious education is presented as an effective communication of a democratic culture by means of a few major challenges that must be faced: risisng intolerance and fundamentalism, a certain conception of the laity, the lack of religious culture, and the plurality of religions. In order simply to face these challenges, religious education must be an edcation in democratic values. However, even if the objective of a religion course does not consist solely in educating people for democracy, religious education necessarily encounters democratic values when it proposes a reinterpretation of the world in light of the Christian message. The author goes on the develop this argument. Finally, he shows how religion courses, insofar as they are vehicles for transmitting a living memory, honour the requirements of democracy by opening students to uderstanding and participation in ``creating a tradition``. |

They receive a salary from the state by virtue of their position as ministers of a religion recognized by Belgian law. It is important to take stock of this new reality. The author first outlines the theological foundations of ``lay`` ministry and parish assistants. then, with his customary rigou, he discusses its principal canonical characteristics in order to then make certain reflections with regard to the church`s civil law. He ends with a discussion of a number of lessons that are necessary for a good ``reception`` of this new ministry. |

He note that this type of organization seeks to linnk two ecclesiological principles: the hierarchical and the communitarian, and that the socio-political context affects the modes of organization within the church. | Abstraksi Narasi | : | The process of requalification for the laity in the church raises a number of new questions about the participation of the laity in chuch governance, and calls for an examination of the institutional structures which makes their collaboration possible. As a result of several experiments, we are now in a better position to assess their success and to evaluate their potential. Among the questions raised by this process, there is the question relating to the impasse in which many proposals end up when they depend on more than the sole authority of the bishop. The question arises, then, of the consistency between, o the one hand, the synodal nature of the local church and of the communication between churches, and on the other hand the institutional shape that is best suited to ensure collaboration betwee the churches. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The new General Catechetical Directory, published by the Congregation for the Doctrie of the Faith, follows the structure of the previous Directory of 1971, but expands on it considerably. Among its new emphases are the following: catechesis within the dynamics of evangelisation, the adult catechumenate as the basic model underlying all catechesis, catechesis as an integral formation, therevalorisation of Tradition and of catechisms, and the requirements, nevertheless exhibits certain weaknesses. Its understanding of the socio-religious development of secularised societies lacks an analytical foundation or dialogical perspektives. Ambiguities concerning the function of the CAtechism of the Catholic Church remain unresolved. The Primary place of Scripture in catechesis is affirmed, but its implications for catechetical methodo-logy are not spelled out. The unity of the three sacraments of Christian initiation is given due emphasis, but the specific problems that currently surround the theory and practice of the sacrament of Confirmation are not addressed. |
