Nomor Halaman : 13-29
Abstraksi Narasi : After the war, Steinbeck had many experiences which in turn caused him to change the nature of his writing and his viewpoint. The concept of phalanx he had established before the war seemed irrelevant when compared with the changing world. In his pre-was novels, Steinbeck expressed his belief in coopertion among men in order to achieve their own betterment. By the time war was over, morals had also changed because of the uncertainties created by the impact of war. In The Wayward Bus, one of his post-war novels, Steinbeck shows some changes in his concept of phalanx. He does not employ the concept in his novel. Instead, he creates a story which actually questions and doubts his own concept of phalanx. In The Wayward Bus, the concept of phalanx, indicated by three parameters, i.e. the union of purpose and cause, the holistic view of life, and the development of chracters thinking, cannot be seen. Not only does Steinbeck put aside the concept of phalanx, in The Wayward Bus he also fails to restructure a new concept. As a result, The Wayward Bus does not say anything significant.
