Abstraksi Narasi : Portraiture is a creative qualitative approach to engaging in research of leaders and groups in action in telling the stories of individuals in life. It was first employed to great effect in Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot`s 1983 AERA award-winning book, The Good HIgh School. In an effort to expand and explain the application of portraiture as a method of scientific research, Lightfoot coauthored a second book with Jessica Hoffmann Davis entitled The Art and Science of Portaraiture, released in 1997. This article critically examines the assumptions and methods of potraiture. It questions the authority of the portraitist in arbitrarily and unilaterally creating portarits, pointing out there is no external, in dependent referent for ascertaining the truth-telling capacity of the portraitist because the definition of truth is circular. Furthermore, the objective of portraiture to capture the "essence" of the subject is implicity a quest for a foundational and stable truth, which in turn requires the portraitist to become omniscient or else the resulting verbal canvas contains only a half or three-quarters truth. Portraiture represents an example of grand theory in the social sciences when such theories are on the decline. The article suggests that the problem with portraiture as a research method is to be found not in technique, but ib its failure to interrogate what it conceals. i.e., the politics of vision.

Discretion in theTranslation of Research to Policy: A Case from Beginning Reading

Abstraksi Narasi : Today, when information spreads like wild fire through the media and a cross the web, we argue that the standards for reporting and interpreting educational research should be raised. The need for a higher standard is urgent in fields such as beginning reading, in which public interest in intense, becuse finding can quickly become distorted or misinterpreted and enshrined through misinformed policy decisions. Researchers investigating beginning reading should exercise extra caution to delimit findings from their own studies. They should take special pains to show how studies contribute to a larger picture of literacy development which policymakers and educational leaders, in turn, need to consider. We examine one recent, and uncomonly influential, reading methods study as an example research that has been overly promoted by the media and misused by some policymakers and eductional leaders to support a simple solution to the complex problem of raising the literacy of young children in high-poverty neighborhoods.

Abstraksi Narasi : The program of reseach on reading sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is one important source of information for practitioners choosing best practices for early literacy instruction. On the basis of evidence from both normal and disabled readers, this research indicates that multiple factors are critical to early literacy success and that phonological knowlegde and skill is one such element. The utility of this body of research was called into question by Allington and Woodside-Jiron in a November 1999 Educational Research article titled "The Politsic of Literacy Teaching: How `Research` Shaped Educational Policy." This response to that article is writen to examine policymaking activities that are misrepresented, to correct mistakes made by Allington and Woodside-Jiron about the range and utility of NICHD research, to correct possible misperceptions of the NICHD-supported research effort that might arise in the minds of those who read the Allington and Wooside-Jiron article, and to present new evidence that clarifies the utility of much of this research.
