Enduring Cognitive Effects of Public and Private Schools

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Educational Researcher
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 5-11
Abstraksi Narasi : Recent research by Coleman and his associates on the effectiveness of public and private schools has evoked a heated debate on the role of private schooling in U. S. Education. All of the existing studies, however, have examined the short-term effects of school type-at most over a 2-year period. This study extends the dabate on the effects of private schools to a longer term perspective. It appears from the present analysis that the enduring influence of school type on vocabulary achievement is nearly nonexistent, whereas the enduring influence on mathematics favors public school students. These results conflict with those of previous studies, and may be due to the longer term perspective of the research reported here. Examination of the enduring effects of private education should therefore be given a high priority in subsequent follow-ups of the High School and Beyond (HSB) study. Until that happens, it seems clear that any policy decisions based on HBS analyses to date are premature.

Nama Pengarang : Jan Nespor, Gene V. Glass
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Educational Researcher
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 12-19
Abstraksi Narasi : It is suggested that the raw data of educational reseaarch have important uses that are not presently being exploited. Reasons for preserving raw data and opening them to general scruting are presented. These include the avoidance of misrepresentation and error, the value of data for secondary analysis, and the potential uses of data as teaching tools. Difficulties with the idea of archiving are also examined: the social problems within the research community that would result from increased scrutiny, the problems involved in maintaining confidentiality, and the practical problems of storing the data and making them accessible.

Abstraksi Narasi : The support for educational research in Canada has historically lagged far behind the support for educational research in other similarly developed countries. In this paper, the steps taken to redress this situation are briefly described. The effect is dramatic; since 1979-80, federal support for self-initiated, non-contractual research in education has increased from C$126,000 to more than C$1.7 million.
