Abstraksi Narasi : In pursuing market leadership, firm often endeavor to be first (a pioneer) in entering a market. The theory behind this is that a pioneer can erect barriers-to-entry that will make entry difficult for later entrants (non-pioneers). As a result, a pioneer could maintain market leadership and enjoy profitability higher than non-pioneers are successful in taking over the market leadership position from pioneers. In almost all cases, non-pioneers adopt a "better" strategy that beats the pioneer`s "first" strategy. This article reviews the theoretical and empirical works supporting both pioneering and non-pioneering strategies and concludes that to abtain market leadership, contrary to the belief "to be first is better than to be better" the strategy may also be successful in gaining market leadership. When to choose a "first" pioneering strategy or a "better" non-pioneering strategy depends on the characteristics of market.

Abstraksi Narasi : This paper explores whether market conditions in South East Asia are able to induce innovations that can be successfully commercialized globally. The propensity of a national market adopt innovations before other countries can be characterised as a lead market. Hitherto the competitiveness of South East Asian countries has been considered to rest in natural resources and low factor costs. Western industrialised countries as well as Japan, on the other hand, are suggested to gain international competitiveness in industries through domestic demand advantage. A demand advantage stems from demanding users and demand for superior goods. This paper argues that developing countries too can successfully foster competitive new industries based on demand advantage. Based on system of the five main factors that facilitate the lead market role of a country, examples of potential lead markets in South East asia are given in port technology, health services and hair and skin care. Multinational firms are advised to focus new innovation development (marketing, R&D) on those countries, which have a lead market advantage in order to generate global innovations.

Abstraksi Narasi : The subcontracting of production, once managerially seen as "more trouble than it was worth", has recently been experiencing a revived interest as a rich territory of studies. This paper covers varions relevant issues insubcontracting relationships between big and small enterprises, such as the advantages and disadvantages of the relations, perceived dependence and perceived satisfaction of the subcontractors toward thir respective relationships with the contractors. My findings that subcontracting relationships help accommodate the growth of the subcontractors. However, lower profit margin and increased dependence are cited as the leading disadvantage of the relations. My study indicates that there is a "critical point" which segregates subcontractors who enjoy much benefits from their subcontracting relations and those who do not. While I endorse the conclusion that subcontracting is a promising growth trajectory for small firms, such relations appear not to contribute much to their innovative capabilities.

Abstraksi Narasi : One of the most dramatic factures of globalization is liberalization of trade on goods services. Some people think that trade liberalization irreversible-the only way to the future. Those countries, those companies, those people who adjust to a changing world will do better. Those who resist will suffer. The world keeps changing. But if we cling to the ideas and models of yesterday we surely will pay a price. This study provides the comparison of possible effects of WTO and APEC trade liberalization commitments on the export competitiveness of China an ASEAN-5 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) in the United States market. Its effect on real GDP, structural adjustment, exports share, product mix, industry structure, and export growth among those contries are predicted by using a multiregion, multisector, computational general equilibrium (CGE) model. While the degree of export rivalry of competition among China and ASEAN-5 in the United States market is examined by using a conventional shift-share methodology. Findings from this empirical work show that in general China will benefit more than ASEAN-5 countries from the WTO and APEC trade liberalization, especially in its export of more-labor intensive manufactures to the United States market. Among the ASEAN-5 countries, Singapore and Malaysia will gain advantage from trade liberalization by specializing in less- labor intensive manufacture exports to the United states market. On the other hand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand will sufer some disadvantages from trade liberalization in its export competitiveness in the United States market. However, some of the possible approaches to attaining a propitious outcome of the competition, and ways to ameliorate adverse effects of the rivalry are raised and discussed.

Abstraksi Narasi : The economic development in East and Southeast Asia after 1960 is discussed in light of economic growth theory, International security politics, and Asian culture. It is argued that the East Asian growth miracle become possible partly due to very favorable combination of factors along these three dimensions. The initial growth potential was high, while the stability required for growth to materialize was encouraged by the international political situation, and possibly also by cultural characteristics of the region. The economic crisis in 1997 need not represent the end of long run growth as far as growth theory can predict, but nor does the risk of political set-backs that could have negative growth effects seem to be lower than before.
