| Abstraksi Narasi | : | When one company acuires another company, based on the economc substance of the acquisition, the transaction should be recorded following either the purchase method or the pooling of interests method. The use of pooling accounting will normally produce higher reported after tax income than that of the use of purchase accounting. Purchase accounting requires that the invesment be recorded at the fair market value of the acquired assets. The objectives of this study is to investigate whether there is a significant difference on the stock price of public companies involved in merger and acquisition, as between the period before and after the first publication of consolidated financial statements. More important, is that the study also investigates the accounting method used, and the type of acquisition selected in merger and acquisition, an how market reacts to accounting method selection. The study analyzes 57 cases of merger and acquisition in the period of Janusry 1990 to June 1997. The result of the analysis shows that there is a significant decrease in the average stock price as between the periods before and after the date of consolidated financial statement publication. The result of the study provides empirical evidence that the activities of merger and acquisitions affects significantly the investment decision made by the investor as reflected in the stock price. The result of further abalysis shows that the use of purchase mathod is more common than that of pooling is interest method. The study also shows that there is no dependency relationship between the method of accounting and the type of acquisition. Finally, the study concludes that there is no significant difference in market reaction between that of purchase nethod and that of pooling of interest method. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The impact on information technology (IT) adoption on firms` activeties has been assessed in many studies. Measures of the benefits are commonly grouped into three categories: efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness. However, there is little empirical evidence that the adoption of IT innovation is capable of creating benefits for very mall firms (i.e those employing below five people). This study examines the impact of the adoption of Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale (EFTPOS) on the activities of very small firms in a high-technology region of Australia. A survey approach was used to gather data from 291 small firms. It is argued that the adoption of EFTPOS produces benefits for small firms` efficiency and competitiveness. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The risks and rewards of a proposed investment are measured by projecting financial performance of the invesment in an assumed business environment. The validiity of the assessment of the project`s performance can be evaluated by examining the appropriateness of the investment in such a modeled environment. This article descibes the application of simulation approach to measuring of rewards and risks in a decision making process for new investment. Specifically, this article provides a model that simulates condition in which a worst condition may threat a company to bankruptcy and the way to reduce such risk. Hypothetical data representing typical situations in investment dcisions were used to illustrate the power and benefits of simulation. This simulation approach is intended to show how the conventional iinvestment decision process can be improved through simulation. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Firms seeking to compete favorably in this era of stiff competition and constantly changing market-place have turned to their human resources as "a source of competitive advantage". In a bid to harness this advantage, they have resorted to employee empowerment programs. However, most of these programs have been disappointingly unsuccessful. Since available literature on the topic has mainly focused on its benefits, causes for its desired outcomes have not been widely exposed. This article therefore attempts to explore challenges that largely account for the high failure rate of empowerment programs, and suggest strategies for their successful implementation. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper provides an insight into the multivarious issues confronting international businessmen in an open environment of hyper-global competition. Shifting political, economic, social, and technological realities demand corresponding paradigmatic shifts in strategy, management and operations. In the new paradigm, change and survival are synonymous. Understanding what is changing helps future focused corporations to anticipate and manage challenging issues and emerging trends to strategize for profitable business innovations in the next millenium. Section 1 of the paper is an attempt at scenario analysis ti identify key issues and trends impacting global competition. section 2 discusses the strategic issues in international business with a focus on innovating core competencies for new products and markets. Section 3 discusses the management issues of production and human resources in the context of organization control structures. These are extraordinary times for international businessmen. The key task is to create differential advantage. To do this, they would need a model of business excellence framework. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Business process reengineering is changing the way employes work, both collectively and individually. Reengineering is reunifying the tasks ti each job, reducing functional specialization of jobs, moving decision making down to the lowest levels of the organization, installing multiple process paths, and organizing workers into teams. Reengineering means that jobs will be more fluid, more complex, and less predictable. Jobs change, roles change, job preparation changes, values change, and compesation and performance measures change (Hammer and Champy 1993). This blurs the functional sructures and concentrates on process driven organization in the hope of aiding effectiveness for break-through gains and dramatic performance. yet many reengineering projects either fair or do not produce the desired results as the people issues are not addressed satisfactorily. This paper proposes a botttom line=Quality of Work-life/employee involvement Model which argues that reengineering can learn from the Quality of Work-life and employee involvement paradigm in handling the emerging dissonance from the change initiative. Specifically, the paper assesses the implied shift in mode of performance appraisal, the emerging roles of human resource development and the subsequent implications on training, compensation, and general employee satisfaction for the success of BPR |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper reports the findings of a questionnaire survey of “knowledge gap” and “deficient performance gap” conducted in Malaysia on auditors and corporate managers. A total of 47 auditors and 72 corporate managers in Klang Valley responded to the survey. The aims of the study are two folds. Firstly, it ascertains the knowledge of the auditors and corporate managers of the auditors’ duties as required by the Malaysian Companies Act 1965 and the Malaysian Approved Standards on Auditing. Secondly, it elicits the perceived performance of auditors in relation to these required duties. The results of the study indicate the existence of “knowledge gap” and “deficient performance gap” between auditors and corporate managers. Overall, the results indicate that: (1) the auditors in Malaysia are knowledgeable about their duties and (2) the corporate managers have limited knowledge of auditors’ duties and they are less satisfied with some of the duties performed by the auditors. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper examines shifts in pattern of specialization of China’s and India’s exported groups of products defined in the three-digit Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 2. This paper applies Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantages (RSCA) index and Spearman’s rank correlation. Some conclusions are withdrawn. First, on average the comparative advantages of both China and India increase, except in the case of China for the period of 1998-2003. Second, China’s pattern of comparative advantage changes more dynamically than that of India. Third, the China’s and India’s patterns of comparative advantage show different trends (divergent/more complementary). |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This study has two research objectives: (1) to find evidence whether investment decisions (allocation of funds in each asset in a portfolio) of Indonesian investors in the short investment horizon diverge with their investment decisions in the long investment horizon, and (2) to examine the belief of Indonesian investors in the mean reversion. This study analyzes the investment horizon from a behavioral point of view by examining the influence of investment horizon on investment decision and mean reversion in Indonesia. We employed the students of Master of Science, Master of Management, and Doctorate Programs at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia as the sample in this research. Of the 217 questionnaires delivered, 172 questionnaires were completely filled and utilized in this study. The main findings of this study are as follows: (1) it is significantly proved that Indonesian investors are inclined to assume higher portfolio risk in the longer investment horizon than that in the shorter investment horizon; (2) it is very interesting to see that on average, the investors are inclined to increase their allocation in the risk-free asset in the longer investment horizon although the difference between the risk-free asset holding in the short investment horizon and that in the long investment horizon is not significant; (3) the framing effect significantly influences the investment decisions, both in short investment horizon and in long investment horizon; (4) there is a tendency for the respondents to show a willingness to assume higher portfolio risk when they received the questionnaires that provided the historical five-year returns on the first page; (5) investors predict an asset gaining 50 percent in the first year to continuously gain in the next four years while expecting an asset losing 25 percent in the first year to continuously loss in the next four years. |
