Modeling academic dishonesty: The role of student perceptions and misconduct type

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 4-21
Abstraksi Narasi : The authors explore academic misconduct in various forms and consider the role of student perceptions. They gather data from students in introductory economics courses regarding 31 types of misconduct. They estimate the relevance of various determinants of misconduct, acknowledging that they may vary across misconduct type and that students' perceptions may influence their behavior. Their estimates reveal that although there are determinants that influence student behavior across misconduct type, some types of misconduct have a unique set of determinants. They find that a student's perception of what constitutes misconduct is an important component of this behavioral decision. These results imply that to reduce a particular type of cheating, one must consider its specific determinants and ensure that students believe that the act is misconduct. In addition, students must believe that the probability of being caught is high.

Master`s in Economics programs: Comparing Canada and the United States

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 92-99
Abstraksi Narasi : The authors compare various characteristics of terminal master's of economics programs in Canada and the United States. As far as they know, this is the first article to present results from a survey of Canadian master's programs in economics. Using a Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, they found significant differences between the Canadian and U.S. programs. All of the Canadian master's of economics programs in their sample are in public institutions, and the majority of their programs are located in colleges of arts and sciences. Canadian programs seem to have higher admission standards and are more likely to offer teaching and research assistantships. A higher percentage of the graduates of Canadian programs are placed in careers in government, whereas a higher percentage of U.S. programs graduates are placed in the private sector. In addition to these and other statistically significant differences, the results also illustrate that in a large number of areas the Canadian and U.S. programs are similar.

Economic education in the middle east: Are the determinants of success in Introductory economics any different?

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 22-40
Abstraksi Narasi : The author examines the eterminants of success in introductory microeconomics, in the context of a Middle eastern society but within an American educational setting. The data set is rich and covers over 3,500 students in one regional campus, allowing control for a wie range of stuent and class characteristics, one of which, nationality, is novel. Many of the results are consistent finds that, overall, students in the Middle East share the ame experience in an economics course as do North American students. One result unique to this article is that nationality significantly explains stuent performance. Nationality is a good proxy for unobserved effort. Because students face different labor market conditions upon graduation, depending on nationality, the value of education is higher for some nationality groups and, therefore, is worth greater effort.

A simple geometric approach to approximating the gini coefficient

Nama Pengarang : John Golden, Michael C. Lovell, Samer Kherfi, McCoy, James P., Milkman, Martin I., Timothy O. Bisping, Hilde Patron, Kenneth Roskelley, Samer Kherfi, Stephen Buckles, Stephen L. Cheung, Scott R. Steele, David Johnstone
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 68-77
Abstraksi Narasi : The author shows how a quick approximation of the Lorenz curve's Gini coefficient can be calculated empirically using numerical data presented in cumulative income quintiles. When the technique here was used to estimate 621 income quintile/Gini coefficient observations from the Deninger and Squire/World Bank data set, this approach performed better than a popular alternative, the trapezoidal rule.
