Differentiable Technology, the curvature of the profit function, and the response of supply to own-price changes

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 222-228
Abstraksi Narasi : The author establishes a property of supply for a competitive firm: Assuming differentiability of the production frontier, linearly independent price vectors have disjoint image sets under the supply mapping. This property supports the main results. First the author drew a simple proof of Mc Faden's proposition that differentiability of the production frontier is necessary and sufficient for strict quasi-convexity of the profit function. This proposition rules out linearity of the profit function on any subset of price domain, In turn ruling out supply and input-demand functions that are constant and have zero values for all price effects. Second, for discrete price changes, own-price effects in supply are strictly positive, assuming a differentiable technology. In this context, strict convexity of the production set is irrelevant. The author indicates implications for cost and demand theory.

An instructional exercise in cost-raising strategies, and perfect complements production

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 215-221
Abstraksi Narasi : The author presents an account of the 1993 contract negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Ford Motor Company to assist students in developing facility with perfect complements production and cost functions and cost-raising strategies. The author seeks an answer to why the UAW targeted Ford of contract negotiations to establish a benchmark for subsequent negotiations with Chrysler and Generals Motors. Contrary to assertions of the popular business press that "Ford drew the short straw" in being the first of the "big Three" automakers to negotiate with the UAW, the author believes it is not implausible that this arrangement served the economic interests of both Ford and the UAW. The UAW targeted Ford because it was more likely to go along with a liberal wage and benefits package given its investment in robotics. In turn, Ford was able to raise, albeit indirectly, its rivals costs.

A classroom demonstration for Teaching network effects

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 153-159
Abstraksi Narasi : The introduction of the concept of network effects is useful at the principles level to facilitate discussions of the determinants of monopoly, the need for standards in high-tech industries, and the general complexity of real-world competition. The author describes a demonstration and an extension that help students understand how consumers make choices affect market outcomes. He then provides an outline for a classroom discussion of the results.

A beginner`s guide to the solow model

Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 187-193
Abstraksi Narasi : The solow model is widely regarded as the workhorse model of the theory of economic growth. Although at one point this model was first encountered in graduate school, it has since filtered down to the intermediate and, occasionally, to the principles of macroeconomics course. Many have commented on how difficult it is to teach the solow model to undergraduates, especially to students in the principles of macroeconomics course. The author demonstrates that under the assumption that the level of savings is autonomous, the essence of the stock-flow adjustment of the solow model becomes much easier to comprehend.

To save or to consume: linking growth theory with the Keynesian model

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 109-123
Abstraksi Narasi : In the neoclassical growth theory, higher saving rte gives rise to higher output per capita. However, in the Keynesian model, higher saving rate causes lower consumption, which may lead to a recession. Students may ask, " Should we save or should we consume?" In most of the macroeconomics textbooks, economic growth and Keynesian economics are in separate, sometimes unsequential, chapters. the connection between the short run and the long run is not apparent. The author builds a bridge between the neoclassical growth theory and the keunesian model. He links the Solow diagram and the IS-LM curves and depicts the sort-run to long-run transition of the economy after changes in saving and other macroeconomic policies.

Teaching microeconomics in wonderland

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 44-57
Abstraksi Narasi : Authors of intermediate microeconomics textbooks devote relatively more space to imperfectly competitive markets than can be justified by their relative occurrence in actual markets. This gap has persisted for at least 40 years, even with an almost complete turnover of authors between the decades of the 1960s and the 2000s. This portrayal gives students a distorted view of the presence of market imperfections throughout the eonomy. It appears that many authors have strong beliefs that noncompetitive behaviour permeates most markets even though concentration statistics fail to support these views. Authors may overly stress noncompetitive industry analyses to enlarge their advocacy role in public policy discussions and analyses of firm behaviour in antitrust cases and consulting.

Self-reports of student cheating: Does a definition of cheating matter?

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 3-16
Abstraksi Narasi : The author examine student cheating based on implicit and explicit definitions of cheating. Prior to being provided a definition of cheating, studnets reported whether they had cheated. students were then provided a definition of cheating and asked to report their cheating behaviours. results indicate that students do not understand what constitutes cheating and are much more likely to report cheating postdefinition. in addition, both pre-and postdefinition cheating behaviors are more prevalent for students with lower GAs and for those who perceive more cheating by student peers. Alcohol consumption, seeing another student cheat, fraternity/sorority membership, and athletic membership also increase the likelihood of cheating. These findings are consistent with previous studies. on the basis of a sample of students who provided cheating data after a definition of cheating is communicated, the authors find that students who believe that punishment for cheating is relatively severe are less likely to report cheating and that students at institutions with well-publicized honor codes are less likely to admit to cheating compared with students at nonhonor code institutions.

Overemphasis on perfectly competitive markets in microeconomics principles textbooks

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 58-77
Abstraksi Narasi : Microeconomic principles courses focus on perfectly competitive markets far more than other market structures. the authors examine five possible reasons for this but find none of them sufficiently compelling. they conclude that textbook authors should place more emphasis on how economists evidence. This requires a more even treatment of market structures and less emphasis on perfect competition. greater emphasis on imperfect competition would also allow textbook authors to address the neglected topic of dynamic efficiency.

Modeling financial innovation and economic growth: Why the financial sector matters to the real economy

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 78-91
Abstraksi Narasi : The author devises a simple way of incorporating the financial sector into a growth model that is pedagogically useful. Financial innovation raises the efficiency of financial intermediation by increasing the variety of financial products and services, resulting in improved matching of the needs of individual savers with those of firms raising funds for expanding future production. the resulting capital accumulation leads to economic growth. he discusses the comparative statics and simple dynamics of this model and uses the model to study the effects of financial liberalization as well as changes in patent laws and accounting standards. the model may be extended to include real research and development as a symbiotic sourcee of endogeneous growth.

Interactions between personality type and the experimental methods

Nama Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Journal of Economic Education
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 18-35
Abstraksi Narasi : The authors bring together two research streams in the literature that examine separately the effectiveness of using experiments in the principles classroom and the relationship between different personality types and student achievement. using a sample of 255 principles of microeconomics students, 48 of whom were enrolled in sections that relied heavily on classroom experiments, they estimate the effectiveness of experimental teaching across personality types defined by the Myers-briggs type indicator. Although studnets enrolled in the experimental sections generally outperformed students in lecture-oriented classes, the authors ask whether students with certain personality types 9and corresponding learning styles) would have performed better under traditional pedagogy. The experimental approach appears to benefit, or be neutral with respect to, most personality types and learning styles. Some evidence indicates that students in the experimental classroom whose thinking tends to be more concrete and factual may not perform as well as more abstract thinkers.
