This may not strike us as particularly noteworthy, says Franz-Josef Steinmetz, because today`s church has to contend with manymore groups than did the community in Ephesus. But if it was possible, through Christ, for jews and Gentiles to be reconciled in one body (cf Eph 2:16), we shouldn`t we hope that people who are separated today can also be ``somatically`` united with him? Steinmetz acknowledges his indebtedness to a book by Koshi Usami, S.J., Somatic Comprehension of Unity: The Church in Ephesus (Rome: Biblical Institute Press, 1983), especially pages 29-70 and 104-108. |
