| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The basic agronomy of government-sponsored transmigration areas in Indonesia`s Outer Islands has often not been well understood. The soils are commonly fragile podzolic soils which quickly break down once the forest in removed leaving low levels of nutrients. Farmer experience in these areas suggests that the requirements of high labour inputs and the lack of adequate transportation and marketing infrastructure make a continuous food crooping strategy difficult to adopt. From the standpoint of soils management, input requirements and operator time costs per hectare, perennial crops, peanuts and livestock offer the best returns. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | this article analyses the economic development of Southeast Kalimantan for the year 1880-1940 within the context of the international debate on economic dualism. From about 1900, Southeast Kalimantan experienced a spectacular economic expansion due to the enlarged exports of oil, rubber, in particular. The total export production, wich also included forest products and coal, is described in terms of a parallelism between Western and non Western dynamic. The repercussions for the regional economy and society were characterised by the pronounced insularity of the Western enclave. The combination of parallelism and insularity did not prove the ideal basis for further economic growth. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | A model of a padi-producing household is developed permitting effects of changes in exogenous variables to be traced through simultaneous changes in household production and consumption behaviour. The model, applied to a village in Central Java, incorporates both a Cobb-douglas function to represent production of padi for a representative household, and a linear expenditure system tom describe the household`s consumption behaviour. Assuming a perfect labour market, the model is used to estimate some elasticities of policy significance. An important finding is that padi output, market surplus, employment and rural wages are all positively related to padi price. |
