| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Rice policy has continued to claim priority in the past four months. The Government`s rice procurement plan into such difficulties in June that in early July important policy changes were announced. Rice production still dominates the scene as much as ever and will continue to play a key role in the Indonesian economy over the next few months. Opinions about short term prospects still differ substantially. In the industrial sector, output and investment in larger factories continue to expand, but this expansion is not shared by the small scale business sector. Prices in general continue to rise but at widely different rates in different areas. The Government is concerned about the rate of growth of the money supply, but rapid expansion of credit continues apace. If the present burst of inflation is not soon brought under control, it is liable increasingly to distort resource allocation and hinder effective budgetary planning and control. Final figures for the 1972/3 budget differ little from planned expenditure, but the original estimates for 1973/4 have been rendered obsolote by inflation. Exports and imports during 1973 are showing dramatic increases over 1972. Repelita I is drawing to a close. By the time the next Survey is published, Indonesia`s Second Five Year Plan period will have begun. At the time of writing, however, no plan document had yet been released. For many monthsnow, the Government`s economic advisers have been so much concerned with short term problems that long term planning has had to take second place. |
