| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Beginning with a discussion of the sources and quality of Indonesian age data by sex, this paper examines the changes in the functional age groups of the population of Indonesia from 1971 to the year 2005, and the implications of these changes for education, labour force participation, dependency ratios and fertility. Data for the period 1971 to 1985 are based on actual enumerations, while those for the period 1990 to 2005 are based on projections. Although the provisional totals of the 1990 Census had been released before the publication of this paper, their breakdown by age was still not available. The functional age categories discussed in the paper include the pre-school years, the primary and intermediate school ages, the teenage years, the reproductive ages of women, the principal working ages and the post-work years. It concludes with a discussion of various policy and planning implications of these changes. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Deepening and strengthening of the industrial structure remains one of the priorities of industrial development in Indonesia. In this article, data from input-output tables have been used to examine the interindustry structure of the Indonesian non-oil manufacturing sector. Analysis of structural changes in manufacturing shows that exports have become the main engine of growth for the non-oil manufacturing sector. It is also found that this development is not inconsistent with the integration of the manufacturing sector in the economy, as manufactured exports on the whole are characterised by strong backward linkages. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that manufactured exports make significant contribution to employment, because both direct and total labour intensities of Indonesia`s exporting sectors are relatively high. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Of all the western economists with a research interest in Indonesia, Bruce Glassburner has had arguably the longest and most sustained commitment. As he remarks in this invited contribution, his first visit in 1957 marked the beginnings of over three decades of research, teaching and consulting work in the country, spanning the difficult years before 1966 and 25 years of the New Order. Owing to this breadth of experience, he is in an unrivalled position to comment authoritatively on development over this period (Ed.). |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper provides an estimate of the value of fixed capital stock in 22 industries, distinguishing three types of capital goods (domestically produced and imported machinery and equipment, and construction works). The estimates of capital stock heve been built up with the help of the Perpetual Inventory Method, whereby the allocation of investments in early years was based on relative Incremental Capital Value Added Ratios computed for a more recent period. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Around the mid- 1980s, Indonesia`s protectionist regime supported an industrial structure in which inductries were mainly oriented towards producing for the domestic market. Since then, trade policies have shifted to a more outward-looking strategy, stimulating the growth and diversification of non-oil manufactured exports. This paper attempts to quantify the nominal and effective rates of protection resulting from trade policies at the end of the 1980s. After an introduction in which the 1989 trade policies are discussed, estimates of nominal and effective rates of protection are presented. It is shown that though the level of protection has declined since 1987, it still varies widely across economic sectors. Furthermore, despite the more open trade strategy, the paper`s findings show that the trade regime remains biased against exports. Finally, by examining some trade policy issues, the paper presents further ways of rationalising the structure of protection in Indonesia`s industrial sector. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | In 1987 the Indonesian government introduced a new rice intensification program, Supra Insus, because production was not keeping pace with demand growth. This paper examines the operation and effectiveness of Supra Insus in West Java and South Sulawesi, and identifies some constraints to the program`s success. These include inadequate resources and heavy administrative workloads which hamper the efforts of agricultural extension personnel; consequent slow development of necessary skills among farmers; delays in implementing organisational improvements to the program; complex procedures for formulation and ratification of credit proposals; institutional and other barriers to the adoption of some technologies; and conflicts between program administrators and regional governments on credit policy. The practice in South Sulawesi of harnessing traditional forums to the purposes of the program may offer a model for other areas. Further research is needed to evaluate the program`s economic performance. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Despite almost universal primary education in Indonesia, and increasing female educational participation, gender differences remain in access to Indonesian education. This paper attempts to measure and explain these differences at primary and secondary level in Indonesia`s provinces between 1980 and 1985. It examines the relationship between provincial school enrolment ratios for males and females and four factors: school availability, formal sector employment, `drop-out` patterns and marriage patterns. School availability is found to be a strong predictor of enrolment levels, and stronger for females than for males. Relationships between enrolment patterns and the other three factors appear less clear cut. |
