| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper reports new data on patterns and trends in concentration in Indonesian manufacturing from 1975 to 1983. Seller concertration is found to be remarkably high, exceeding that of most other sizeable developing countries for which data are available. Manufacturing activity is heavily concentrated around Jakarta and neighbouring areas and in East Java; moreover, the six most industrialised provinces account for well over 80% of industrial output. In terms of ownership, private (domestic) firms are by far the most important group, and their share has been expanding. For various reasons, the significance of these firms is overstated in the statistics. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The paper examines the impact of the new rice technologies in Klaten, Central Java, a region considered the cradle of the Green Revolution in Indonesia. It is argued that the changes which have occurred since the 1960s should be viewed not as a dramatic transformation of a formerly static rural economy but rather as part of a continuous process of socio- economic change which has occurred over many decades. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The purpose of this paper is to outline the salient features of the Indonesian coffee industry, and to examine the economics of smallholder coffee production on Sumatra and the other Outer Islands. The evidence presented demonstrates that the return to smallholder coffee production on these islands, both real and relative, has been very favourable throughout the last twenty-five years and it is suggested that significant economic rents are accruing to smallholders. The paper argues that it is the availability of these economic rents which stimulates the growth of coffee output. The conclusion is that coffee exports are a promising source of foreign exchange for Indonesia, and that in the light of the recent rise in coffee prices on world markets and suspension of ICO quotas, Indonesia should embark upon a vigorous promotion and extension campaign. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The months following the 12 September devaluation have seen a spate of policies directed at reducing the uncertainty faced by the business sector in the wake of the devaluation as well as at restructuring the economy, especially the trade regime. The period has nevertheless been marred by some decline in public confidence. Two very important policy packages, those of October 25 and January 15, removed or relaxed quantitative import controls on a number of goods, mainly inputs, and reduced tariffs on other goods. The devaluation should not be seen as part of these trade reform packages since it was undertaken primarily for balance of payments reasons, while trade reform is part of the long term, post-oil boom restructuring strategy which the Government has been following for several years. Of course, one cannot deny the wisdom and appropriateness of announcing the trade reforms after the devaluation. But their impact on business confidence and performance, especially in the manufacturing sector, will inevitably take time to become apparent. At the beginning of January the President announced another contractionary budget. Development expenditures are budgeted to fall again in nominal terms, while more reliance is to be placed on foreign aid and borrowing to finance development expenditures. Revenues from oil and gas at Rp 6.9 trillion will only just cover projected debt service charges. The debt service ratio is now running at over 30%, and is expected to rise further. On the brighter side, the impact of the expected to rise further. on the brighter side, the impact of the devaluation is already being felt on the balance of payments. Without the devaluation, the 1986/87 current account deficit would have been about $6 billion; official estimates now put it at $4.2 billion, and the deficit in 1987/88 is expected to be about $2.6 billion. Prospects for GDP growth in 1987 are also better than for the past two years, although the most optimistic projection is just 3%, and even that is only likely to be achieved if the present deregulation policies are continued. |

This paper explains this pattern in terms of the interaction between competitive pressures from the modern sector and the impact of the Depression. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This article presents the main results of a survey of the utilisation of existing productive capacity in the Indonesian manufacturing sector. It was found that although prevailing levels of capital utilisation in Indonesian manufacturing do not appear to be out of line with levels observed in other developing countries, there is scope for improvement in some sectors. The paper suggests some policy reforms which would improve the competitive environment for Indonesian manufacturing and increase the price ratio of capital to labour, thus promoting more intensive capital utilisation in the manufacturing sector. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This paper examines monthly wage data collected by the Agro Economic Survey from seven villages in the Cimanuk River Basin of West Java, where data on agricultural and non-agricultural wages and prices of nine essential commodities were collected twice monthly between 1977 and 1983. Movements in money wages deflated by both the rice price and a weighted index of basic commodities are analysed in detail and differences between lowland and upland villages are discussed. |
