| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Analysis of Japan-South Korea security interaction shows a solidifying security relationship rooted less in threats from North Korea and more in shared economic interests. Remarkable as the ongoing security relationship is, it is limited in operation and narrowly focused. This has implications for regional security organization and proponents of the U.S.-Japan-South Korea ``virtual alliance.`` |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Preliminary data show that Hong Kong`s poor suffer increased exposure to air pollution. People in lower-class areas may be up to five times as likely to be hospitalized for respiratory illness as their counterparts in high-income areas. In addition, variation in household income may explain up to 60% of Air Pollution Index (API) variation between districts. Despite this, air pollution has not been seen as a class issue because of the invisibility of Hong Kong`s poor, the nature of environmental activism, and a relative lack of class tensions. Two of Asia`s most significant trends are deepening income inequality and increasing environmental degradation. Yet, these two trends are often examined separately, as parts of entirely different spheres. Using air pollution in Hong Kong as a case study, this article argues that environmental issues and social class are intimately intertwined. Environmental burdens, such as air pollution, disproportionately affect the poor. Social class-who is generating pollution and who is affected-also determines how environmental issues are perceived and addressed. However, little combined analysis of social class and the environment exists outside the United States. Hong Kong`s struggle to improve air quality in the post-handover period provides an unusual opportunity to examine the relationship between social class and the environment in Asia. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This article examines Chinese institutions designed to funnel citizen opinions to leaders. It argues that the dynamic between individuals hoping to solve grievances and officials hoping to scout out problems strengthens higher-level control over subordinates. The process, when done well, may promote regime legitimacy. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | East Timor`s statehood was launched with two U.N.-supervised elections, one in August 2001 to elect the Constituent Assembly (which became the parliament) and the second in April 2002 to elect the head of state. Analysis of district-level returns from the Assembly election reveals two types of strategic voting, three lines of political cleavage in the electorate, and two legacies of Indonesian rule. This article analyzes East Timor`s first two elections, with particular focus on the bases of voting choice and on the nascent party system. There are three main findings: (1) a higher level of political savvy among the citizenry than expected, given their poverty and lack of formal education; (2) three political cleavages, one generational and two regional-one that divides the eastern from the western region and one that distinguishes the central mountain region from the rest of the country; and (3) areas that under Indonesian rule had voted heavily for the ``opposition`` party have now switched to FRETILIN, the new predominant party. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Civil society and the Internet energize each other in their co-evolutionary development in China. The Internet facilitates civil society activities by offering new possibilities for citizen participation. Civil society facilitates the development of the Internet by providing the necessary social basis - citizens and citizen groups - for communication and interaction. These arguments are illustrated with an analysis of the discourse in Qiangguo Luntan [Strengthening the Nation Forum] and an ethnographic study of Huaxia Zhiqing [Chinese Educated Youth], . |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This article examines the role that ``civil society`` in South Korea has played in promoting the rights of transnational migrant workers in an era of globalization. The analysis concludes that the nexus between the country`s civil society and transnational workers has been critical in the process of slowing the ``race to the bottom.`` |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This article evaluates the prospects for democratic transition in Myanmar by looking at the environment under which dissident leader Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in 1995 and 2002. It argues that while her release in 1995 was mainly based on the regime`s overconfidence in its future political stability and Myanmar`s economic prosperity, the absence of these expected outcomes in the early 2000s has forced the military government to develop a more conciliatory position toward the opposition leader. This analysis draws broader implications from current political and economic affairs and assesses their impact on Myanmar`s transition to democracy. |

Thus, controversial issues such as Asian values and Confucian capitalism need to be re-examined in this globalized age. |
