Abstraksi Narasi : The authors of this article retrace the years spent by Raden Saleh in Paris between 1845 and 1848, as well as his relations with France. Thanks to the aid of Dutch living in Paris, such as the Ambassador Fagel: The former Governor of the East Indies, van der Capellen; the General Le Bron de Vexela; and the family connections of Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha, etc., the Javanese painter Raden Saleh enjoyed a warm welcome from Parisian high society and was even reveived at the court of Louis-Philippe, who acquired two of his paintings. Raden Saleh entered into contact with the well-known artist Horace Vernet, in whose stidio Raden Saleh worked for a while at Versailles, but whith whom he never travelled to Algeria. Raden Saleh was apparently a prolific painter during his time in Paris, accomplishing 12 paintings in two and half years, as well as participating in the Exhibitions of 1847 and 1848. During his time in Paris, he focused mainly on paintings depicting wild animals. He presented two of his works to the Emperor Napoleon III. In the Appendix, is included a list of his paintings completed in France.

Abstraksi Narasi : Following the expedition of the brothers Jean and Raoul parmentier from Dieppe to Sumatra in 1529, it was not until a little over sixty years later that a new expedition from Britanny was sent to the East Indies. One of the ships was shipwrecked off the Maldives (and thanks to one of the survivors, Pyrard de Laval, we have an excellent account of Male, capital of the Maldives, and India). The other vessel would make it to Aceh and, thanks to Francois Martin de Vitre, we have an interesting account of the trip. First published in 1604, his memoir was republished only one time in1609. It is accompained by Malay-french dictionary (the first of its kind...), a description of the diverse lants and animals encountered along the way, as well as . the most interesting part of Fr. Martin`s account is that which he tells us about the of society Aceh itself, such as the fact that at this time many of the inhabitats were still > (i.e.Hindus), that Turkish broers travelled there frequently and that we owe the introduction of firearm techniques to Aceh .

Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 243-252
Abstraksi Narasi : through a reading of the excerpts of te unpublished correpondence of Ouis-charles Damais, stored in Jakarta, the author attempts to reconstitute the life of a researcher working in Indonesia at the crucial time when the country was making its transition from Dutch colonisation to independence. This short essay points up to problems, both professional and material, which Damais had to face in a country dislocated by the rapid succession of political changes. This article also considers the humanist view of a Westerner for a people trying to regain its dignity by struggling against a colonial system, which Damais himself held to be morally unjustified.

Nomor Halaman : 207-224
Abstraksi Narasi : In 1930, Henry Fauconnier was awarded the Goncourt (Literary) Prize for his novel, Malaisie. It takes place within the context of a Selangor plantation, which he himself had opened at the beginning of the century. This article draws upon his family archives to understand better the personal journey of a writer born to a bourgeois family in Charente. An analysis of several critical reviews of his novel resituates his work within the literary context of the time. If his novel is known for its extreme sensitivity to the Soul Of Malaya (the title of the English translation) and is considered one of the best FRench texts on the subject, the impressionistic picture the author paints of his Malasian experiences places this novel outside of hystory and the first breaks within the colonial empire.

Abstraksi Narasi : The Europeans did not truly kow timor until the publication of the results of the Baudin expedition. Before the First consulate sent a scientific mission to explore the coasts of New Holland (Australia), it was rare that the French travelled to timor. Of the twenty-three learned persons who embarked on the Geographe and the Naturalistte only 5 returned to France. Nonetheless, this deadly expeditions gave us the publication of Voyage de decouvertes aux Terres Australes (The Discoveries of a Voyage in the southern Lands) (2 volumes, paris, 1807 and 1816 and Atlas) and rich documentation on all aspects of the island of Timo, visited by the travelers on two occassions in 1801 and 1803. Working in difficult conditions, Francois Peron, the only naturalist on the expedition, and his friend and collaborator, the drawer Charles Lesueur, realised considerable results, with an attention and zealousness to which Cuvier paid hommage. The author sets out to reconstitute faithfully the events and the conditions of the hunt which the two young erudites made in order to obtain a sample of a species of crocodile then unknown in Europe. They succeeded in bringing a skeleton of one such crocodile to Paris, which they left to the Natural History Museum and where it is still conserved today. Cuvier used >, which he named crocodilus biporcartus (two-boned crocodile), to write his monograph on this type of crocodile (1807). Peron and Lesueur can also be credited with having collected a quantity of useful information for the schools of and , scientific domains and words still unknown in 1800. Thanks to their hunting trip, they provide specific information about the attitude of the Timor people towards the crocodiles which they venerated as a sacred animal and which they were careful not to kill.

Abstraksi Narasi : Missionaries from the congregation of the Missions-Etrangeres de Paris arrived in the Malay world following their expulsion from Siam by the political authorities there in 1783. In 1786, Francis Light invited one of them, Garnault, to settle along with his christian followers on the Island of Penang. This was the beginning of the Mission could not rely on only one language for the purpose of religious propagation, but had to use Siamese, Portugese, Chinese, Latin and other languages. Nevertheless, the missionaries recognised the roe that Malay played as a regional lingua franca. in the late 1820s, the missionaries published their first catechisms in Malay, followed later by the translation of other religious works. Active in Penang from 1831 to 1839, the missionary Francois-Antoine Albrand undertook the elaboration of a Latin Malay dictionary, which appears to ha ebeen finished in 1844. For unclear reasons, this dictionary was never published, but a manuscript version of it may still exist in the archives of this congregation. Some thirty years later, a longtie colleague of Albrand, Pierre Favre, would be the first Frenchan to publish a Malay dictionary.

Abstraksi Narasi : To a large extent to the relationship between France and Indonesia is determined by their respective expatriate communities, which in turn are affected by the state and evolution of the realtionship. the French community in Indonesia (some 3000 people) is basically engaged in business activities. But the FRench expatriates find it difficult to expand due to a lack of continuity in France`s strategy towards Indonesia community is even more limited (around 1000 people); its members are deeply involved in pursuing higher education and training in technological fields, within the framework of a number of doctoral programs between both countries. Data about both communitiew are presented and discussed, as well as developments in the French-Indonesian relationship with its major emphasis on business and training; however a large mental cultural gap remains between both communities, as their respectives cultures and motives differ widely.

Recently, the author (re-) discovered an important collection of fifty-five opaque water colours (gouache) drawings in the Bibliotheque de l`Arsenal, paris, formerly in the possession of Antoine rene d`Argenson, marquis de Paulmy (1722-1787). This find at once greatly multiplies the number of known works by Beeckman. The charming series of drawings portray a great array of peoples then living in Batavia, such as a Javanese, a Mardijker, a mestizzo, several Chinese, a Japanese, slave women engaged in menial tasks, and an ambonese in war dance. This Preliminary article anticipates a work of greater length on Beeckman, his whereabouts in Batavia, and the Paris collection.
