Abstraksi Narasi : The small port of Honfleur (situated to the southwest of the Seine estury in Normandy) was in times past a point of departure for numerous expeditions going to Canada and the East Indies. The ancient, wooden church of Sainte Catherine in Honfleur contains a stone inscription commemorating the beatification in 1900 (by His Holiness Leo the 13 th ) of Pierre Berthelot, a native of the region. The inscription reads: . there is also a painting representing the maartyrdom of Pierre Berthelot. A famous regional artist, A. Voisard-Margerie, painted it in 1926 (and not without some imagination). These sources provide us with a fascinating personality, Pierre Barthelot (about whom we still know very little), who left for the East Indies with Augustin de Beaulieu (1619). Berthelot travelled to Goa (where he became a friend of the Portugese Governor). The Governor sen Berthelot on a mission to the Sultan Iskandar Thani in Aceh. There he died 1638 in circumstances which have yet to be adequately explained.

Abstraksi Narasi : Although a large body of literature has been produced on the Chinese of Java, there are very few studies of the history of their various settlements. We present here a detailed study of the Chinese community of Surabaya whose historical development appears to be specific to East Java. In the first part, we discuss the sources concerning the beginnings of the community and briefly allude to an early Islamisation process which allowed the settlers to intermingle with local society. In the second part, we single out three big Peranakan families (the Han, the Tjoa and The), whose history (which lasts from the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century to the early 1930s) may be regarded as representative of the different ways the Chinese and their descendants adapted themselves to the host society. In the third part, we put the attempts of the community to re-establish its Chinese roots into relation with political issues on the Mainland and in Java. The first attempt started in Surabaya in 1864 with the foundation of the Hokkien Kong tik Soe or ``temple of the Merits of Fujian``, which was aimed at reviving Chinese funeral and mariage customs and curbing the process of Islamisation. The second attempt, much broader in scope, was aimed at promoting Chinese education by the foundation of various private schools (one of them, the Hoo Tjiong Hak Tong, 1903, was closely linked with Mainland revolutionnaries), reviving Confucianism as a reaction against Westernization (foundation of a temple dedicated to confucius in 1898), establishment of a Chinese Chamber of Commerce (1906) intended to help the local Chinese merchants to promote their enterprises both in the South Seas and in China. Since the last decades of the 19th century there has been a continuous stream of migrations from the Mainland that gradually modified the social and economic structure of the Chinese community and finally caused it to split up. In the fourth part we deal with the Totok (or newcomers) who started to organise themselves into a great number of smaller associations (on the basis of geography, profession of linneal descent); we also pay attention to the Peranakan who resented the competition of the newcomers decided to struggle separately. This restructuration was distrupted by the recession of the 1920s, the depression of 1930, which affected the Chinese of Java and aspecially of Surabaya, and was finally stopped with the occuation of the Dutch Indies by the Japanese. The conclusians of Chinese descent in Surabaya cannot be dissociated from that of the city as a whole.

Abstraksi Narasi : In September 1995, while doing archaeological research in the province of Aceh, the author and his team discovered funerary inscriptions permitting them to advance new hypotheses concerning the sites of the kingdoms of Lamuri and Barat. The first, often cited by traveller, might be found near the present village of Lamreh (50 km to the east of Banda Aceh), where at least one of the stele found, delated 608 AH (1211 AD) would be several decades earlier than the previously known oldest inscription. Another tomb dated 790 AH (1388 AD) would allow one to hink that the kingdom of Barat (cited by the Nagarakertagama in 1365) would be found in the vicinity of Lammo (93 km to the east of Banda Aceh). The author thinks that these discoveries attest to the presence of kingdoms coverted to Islam 8 decades before the date up till now considered valid.

Abstraksi Narasi : After reviewing the circumstances and results of the first congress of Javanese in Semarang (1991) and relating the proceedings of the second congress held at Batu in 1996, the article synthesizes the principle questions debated concerning the politics of language, usage, teaching, the press and puublishing, literature and the arts, spirituality and values. In general, the evidence of a certain decline in spoken usage and the lack of interest in literature calls for concrete measures, which put strong emphasis on cultural and spiritual values connected with language, can been from the point of view of its function in reinflecting identity. It seems as though Javanese must respond more and more to a need for symbolic and ideoloogical `` retraditionalizing of linguistic communication properly so called, bound to Indonesianizing.
