Effects of Dynamic Assessment on Teachers` Expectations of Handicapped Children

Nama Pengarang : Victor R. Delclos, M. Susan Burns, Stanley J. Kulewicz
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Educational Research Journal
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 325-336
Abstraksi Narasi : Dynamic assessment is a method of examining a child`s approach to learning and response to instruction on a novel task. The feature of dynamic assessment that distinguishes it from traditional approaches to the assessment of intelligence is an extensive teaching phase during which the examiner observes the child`s response to a variety of instructional techniques. This study examined the effects that viewing dynamic assessment situations would have on teachers` expectations of handicapped children as learners. Results were discussed in terms of the overall goals and functions of dynamic assessment.

Children`s Mathematics Achievement in Hawaii: Sex Differences Favoring Girls

Nomor Halaman : 437-461
Abstraksi Narasi : Most reviews of the literature have concluded that boys have surpassed girls in mathematics achievement at some point in their schooling. In Hawaii, however, some studies have suggested that sex differences in mathematics achievement have favored girls. In this paper, norm-referenced mathematics achievement test results for Hawaii public school students in four ethnic groups and four grades are examined for sex differences. Results are examined for sex differences varying by mathematical skill, among high-achieving students, and among ethnic groups. The findings show that the Hawaii public school girls have higher achievement levels than the boys. The boys achieve their highest scores in mathematical reasoning, and the girls achieve their highest scores in computation. High-achieving girls outperform high-achieving boys. Sex differences favoring girls among Caucasion students are less than they are among Japanese-American, Filipino-American, and Hawaiian students. The relationship of the sex differences to sociocultural factors is examined, and the practical consequences of the differences are discussed.

Adolescent Self-Concept: Testing the Assumption of Equivalent Structure Across Gender

Nama Pengarang : Barbara M. Byrne, Richard J. Shavelson
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Educational Research Journal
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 365-385
Abstraksi Narasi : This study tested the invariance of a multidimensional, hierarchical self-concept (SC) structure for adolescent males and females. In a covariance structure analysis of data from a sample of 832 (412 males, 420 females) grade 11 and 12 students, with multiple measures of general, academic English, and mathematics SC facets, SC structure differed for males and females. Although the number of SC factors, pattern of factor loadings (except for one), and hierarchical structure were invariant across gender, relations among the factors differed. These structural differences derived largely from the differential way in which English and mathematics SC related to the other SC facets, and to grades, for each sex. In addition, significant gender differences were found in the reliability of certain measurement scales, and correlated errors of measurement were more prevalent for males than for females. The study has important implications for substantive research that focuses on the comparison of SCs across groups and, in particular, across gender.

Teacher evaluation With Multiple and Variable Lines of Evidence

Nama Pengarang : Kenneth D. Peterson
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Educational Research Journal
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 311-317
Abstraksi Narasi : Teacher evaluation is key to understanding effective teacher practice, rewarding excellent performance, and improving training programs. Yet the current practice of principal visits and report does not promise to promote reforms for teachers or teacher educators. In this study six lines of evidence of teaching impact or value were developed and tested with 281 K-12 classroom teachers. Teachers selected a minimum of four lines for promotion in a career ladder system. Administrator reports, parent variation and correlations with other measures. Professional activity and years of experience showed erratic relations. In general, the lines of evidence showed independence, suggesting that multiple measures may have tapped different constructs of quality.

Student Access to Guidance Couseling in High School

Nomor Halaman : 287-310
Abstraksi Narasi : The advice students receive on selecting a high school curriculum track or planning an appropriate course of study is likely to come from both home and school. The primary mechanism in America`s public high schools to assist students in making informed decisions about these important choices is guidance counseling. Using data from the first and second follow-ups of High School and Beyond, including student self-reports, test scores, and high school transcripts, we found that guidance counseling services appear to be unequally available to all public high school students. Students from families of lower socioeconomic status (SES), of minority status, and from small schools in rural areas are less likely to have access to guidance counseling for making these important decisions at the beginning of their high school careers. Moreover, students who lack access to guidance counseling are more likely to be placed in nonacademic curricular tracks and to take fewer academic math courses. It appears that students who may need such guidance the most, since they come from home environment where knowledge of the consequences of curricular choices is limited, are least likely to receive it in their schools.

Salary Equity: Similarities and Differences in Outcomes From Two Common Prediction Models

Nama Pengarang : Candace Garrett Schau, Vivian H. Heyward
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Educational Research Journal
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 271-286
Abstraksi Narasi : Stepwise multiple regression was used to develop salary prediction equations, one from each of the two faculty samples most frequently utilized in this type of research (males only, all faculty). These equations were developed using faculty information from an American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Category I institution showing typical sex- difference patterns in salary and other professional characteristics. Sex did not enter into the all-faculty equation. However, an analysis model using residuals showed that women, on the average, were paid significantly less than men. This sex difference was larger using the male, rather than the all-vaculty, sample. Higher percentages of males than females were both overpaid and underpaid. Efficacy of the analysis model and differences in results from the two salary prediction equations are discussed.

Research Note: Dimensions of Program Quality in Regional Universities

Nama Pengarang : Denise L. Young, Robert T. Blackburn, Clifton F. Conrad
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : American Educational Research Journal
Volume / Nomor Edisi : -
Nomor Halaman : 319-323
Abstraksi Narasi : This study replicated and extended research by Conrad and Blackburn on program quality in regional universities. The sample doubled the number of departments, increased the number of institutions and programs, and added and additional state, for a total of three states in this study. The same general variables emerged as the strongest predictors, but strengths were lower. When "state" did not load in the regression analysis, the inference was that generalizablity is warranted.
