| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This study is designed to know the problems faced by elementary school teachers to get a promotion by the credit points system, their abilities in doing activities evaluated by the system, and their suggestions on its implementation. The population is elementary school teachers in Depok, Sleman. A sampel of 246 teachers is drawn randomly from the population. Data are collected by administering a questionnaire, and analyzed in percentages. The result shows that there are internal and external-bureaucratic problems faced by the teachers. According to the teachers, it is easy to teach, to guide, their pupils, and to do other supportive activities. Professional development is supposed to be a difficult activity. They suggest that there must be a deregulation in promotion proposal and automatic promotion system. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The purpose of this study are to discover the learning styles, and the language learning strategies most preferred, correlation among the variables exists, and the degree of influence each independent variable exerts on the dependent variable. For data collection, the Barsch Learning Styles Inventory and the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning were distributed to 156 students of English at the University of Sriwijaya, Palembang. The results showed that : (1) visual is the most preferred learning style, whereas metacognitive and affective are the most preferred language learning strategies. (2) certain independent variables have a significant correlation with certain dependent variables, for example, visual with memory, auditory with cognitive, tactile with affective, and semester with compensation; (3) females use a greater variety of language learning strategies than males; and (4) semester has a significant correlation with compensation but not with other strategies. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The purpose of this study was to investigate the leadership roles and practices of the principal in improving school effectiveness. This descriptive study involved the principal, counselor, and 11 teachers from the Tonsley Park Primary School in South Australia. The findings showed that all respondents generally regarded team leader as the most important role, while supervisor was rated as the least important. Of the 20 tasks observed, generelly revealed that a principal should work cooperatively with staff to ensure more effective use of their skills. While, the task of a principal in making decisions on staff development programs was not necessarily expected by the practicing teachers. All respondents considered organization/coordination as the most important area within which a principal should provide more leadership, while curriculum or instructional improvement and innovation was regarded as the least important. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The 1994 English curriculum has been implemented since the 1994-1995 academic year at the secondary schools. In order to implement the curriculum well, teachers and others concerned should understand the principles underlying the development of the curriculum. Implications of implementing the curriculum should also be considered very carefully so that optimal results can be expected. Four areas of implications will be discussed in this article, namely: teaching and learning activities, the training of English teachers, the teachers` lesson plans, and the evaluation procedures. In addition, two of potential problems of implementation will also be discussed. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | Reader-Response Criticism proposes a new way of looking at literary text. One of the writers of this criticism discusses about `literary competence` which entails the idea of `ideal reader`. The writer proposes the idea of `ideal audience` to work with fields of art other than literature. In an attempt to give the proper appreciation of art, norms are required, and norms in art can be arrived at using the concept of `ideal audience`. It is a fact that norms are normally contextual, not universal, and change according to the change according to the change in the concept of art creation. Then the question is why take the trouble of forming norms if they keep changing? |

There are attitudes and strategies that teachers may display or use to promote multicultural perspectives in Indonesian social studies curricula, i.e. the integrity of all cultures across eras, the equivalence of cultures, the celebration of cultures, the selection of cultural heroes, and the inclusion of children`s cultural values. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | This research was aimed at knowing the effectiveness of providing journal writing in supporting the students` skills in writing English essay. The subjects were English department students who took Writing III course in the academic year of 1995/1996. This study involved two intact groups of students. The experimantal group was given weekly journal writing, while the control group followed the regular writing. At the end of the treatment, writing tests on free topics were assigned and the students` works were scored using ESL Composition Profile. The result of analysis using t-test indicated that journal writing scores of the students from the two groups were not significantly different. However, students` responses indicated positive evaluation on the application of journal writing. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The vital role of English as an instrument to speed up national development justifies substantial efforts to improve the instruction. Learners of English in Indonesia suffer from difficulties since the language environment does not support them. Compensating the lack of environment support with good quality of English instruction in the primary and secondary schools would need a huge budget that the Government could not afford. Therefore, the target of the efforts should be limited to a smaller but more prospective population: university students. |

| Abstraksi Narasi | : | The objective of the study was to know the academic and administrative personnel`s perception on the decision making style of madrasah ibtidaiyah negeri (MIN) principals at Malang municipality. Employing the descriptive design, the study involved the academic and administrative personnels in MIN. Data were collected by questionnaire and statistically analyzed in descriptive measures. The main findings of the study were that the academic and administrative personnel`s perception on the MIN principals decision making included all of the decision making styles: participated, concultative, instructive, and delegative styles. |
