| Abstrak | : | A compact derivation of the fact that the arc-length-weighted average Sun–planet separation in a Kepler orbit is exactly equal to the semi-major axis is developed. The derivation is self-contained and serves to emphasize that averages over different variables can yield different results and that one must always be clear about what is being averaged over. |

| Abstrak | : | A variant of the apparent depth method to determine the refractive index of solids is proposed. This method is simple and can be easily implemented in a lab with minimal equipment, or even at home. The experimental setup involves a rectangular prism, a ruler, a sheet of paper, and a pencil. To demonstrate the technique and the accuracy of the method, the refractive index of three different materials was measured. |

| Abstrak | : | We present an experimental analysis of the magnetic field generated by a square coil. In contrast to the usual circular coil, an analytical expression is easily derived over the whole space. This allows quantitative comparisons not only along the coil axis but also in the coil plane, where we demonstrate a smooth transition from the infinite-wire model to the dipole model. Unlike the 1D Hall probes usually found in teaching laboratories, we use a smartphone whose 3D sensor allows precise alignment with respect to the coil's symmetry elements. |

| Abstrak | : | The Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin and bounce (path integral) answers for the rate of escape from the ground state of a metastable potential well are both reduced to an expression involving only functionals of the potential, without the need for solving any auxiliary problems. The results are extended to low-lying excited states, and they are applied to the classic cubic parabola and other model potentials. A numerical calculation is done of the escape rate from the ground state of the cubic parabolic well for a variety of barrier heights, and is found to compare well with the WKB result. |

| Abstrak | : | We present a simple experiment on thermal diffusion in metal rods that can be used to integrate computation into the advanced lab. An analytical solution exists for the transient heat conduction in an infinite rod with a delta function heat input, but no analytical solution exists for short rods or for long duration heat inputs. Our apparatus is a copper rod with a heater and thermometers attached to the rod. The temperature of the metal rod due to transient heat conduction can be modeled using a simple numerical simulation and the finite centered difference method. Using a 22 cm long copper rod with the ends thermally sunk in aluminum blocks, we show poor agreement between the experimental results and the infinite rod analytical model, but excellent agreement between the experimental results and our numerical simulation. This experiment shows the power of a numerical simulation but also the limitations of the chosen model, which can be used as motivation for further exploration. |

| Abstrak | : | There are many barriers keeping undergraduate physics students from pursuing research. Insufficient exposure to the process of scientific research is one such barrier. We assigned second year physics students a project familiarizing them with physics literature. The project involved reading a scientific paper from a professor at their university and reaching out to the authors of that paper. We also incorporated coding exercises into the curriculum to increase awareness of (and access to) research tools and prepare students for research careers. Both of these initiatives can be adapted and implemented in other introductory science courses. |
