| Abstrak | : | When there is aquatic life in the river, then both animals and plants that live in that river will need certain amount of dissolved oxygen in order to stay alive. If some waste is disposed into the river with certain condition, then the river will tray to retain its condition to its initial one by self-purification and this process need oxygen. Because of this oxygen demand, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the river will decrease near disposal point and will increas back after passing through the critical point. Therefore, the amount of dissolved oxygen depletion must be known with certain waste condition, so that the pollution in the river can be avoided. The Calculation of this amount of oxygen can be done by using Streeter Phelps equation derived from oxygen mass balance in the river. For more detail, we can not only consider Streeter Phelps equation but also other factors such as photosynthesis, respiration, aeration and sediment oxygen demand that all depend on the condition of each river. The model can be simulated by FORTRAN computer program to figure out the amount of dissolved oxygen depletion in the river for certain condition of waste disposal. A curve of distance from disposal versus dissolved oxygen concentration (Oxygen sag curve) then can be made for each river profile, either with one or more point of disposal. |

| Abstrak | : | Template matching is one of the methods commonly used in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) due to its simplicity. The method tries to recognize the character by comparing the already known pattern with the unknown. The unknown character will be guessed as a certain character when the comparison between both objects generate a high procentage of equality. This research tries to find out the feasibility in the usage of the method for recognizing characters especially the computer generated character. As the result it can be concluded that the method is very sensitive to the existance of noise. Therefore a preliminary processing to the image has to be performed to remove noise. The method works well for image with little noise and same font type and size. Therefore the method only appropriate to convert the online-read only text to the ordinary text. |

| Abstrak | : | Desalination process is a critical step in water supply planning because there is limited fresh water for our consumption today. Desalination can be done using different methods. One of such method is electrodialysis. Electrodialysis is a membrane process using electrical potential difference as driving force for ions movement. This research has done an experiment to desalinate NaCl solution using an electrodialysis stack, which has been equipped with monopolar ion exchange membranes, i.e. cation exchange membranes and anion exchange membranes. The purpose of this research is to determine voltage and time effects in the desalination process. Electrical voltage and time were varied during operation using different feed concentration (i.e. 100 ppm – 500 ppm). From the experiment it has been found that at a longer time, desalination process was become effective. The limiting current for electrodialysis processes couldn't be observed. But it can be recommended that the optimum voltages for various feed concentrations were around 35 - 45 volt. |

| Abstrak | : | This study proposes a teaching approach to promote conceptual understanding for undergraduate students who are learning introductory physics. The students are divided into groups, each of which is assigned to study and present a topic describing the mechanism of a physical phenomenon or instrument. They are also required to relate the topic with the relevant concepts that have already been taught. This method has been implemented to a small sample of students. It showed that the students understanding was increased. The students also expressed positive comments about this approach. |

| Abstrak | : | Advances in Information Technology (IT) have reformed business, industry, entertainment, government and also education. IT deployment is evolving in four phases: automation, rationalization, reengineering and new business model. IT investment should not be justified on the financial returns only, but also intangible returns. A framework of IT investment distinguishes eight types that are related to different potential returns. Another framework proposed four types of IT investment that is distinguished from strategic objectives and technology scope dimensions. In education sector, IT deployment has a wide range application from administrative system, service for student, campus teaching - learning, to distance learning and virtual university. Higher educations institution must make serious action to plan and manage its IT investment for better operation, better service, growth and survival. |
