Looking Up: Observational Astronomy for Everyone

Pengarang : Michael Noble Farney
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 226–228
Abstrak : Physics teachers are sometimes asked to teach an astronomy course for non-majors. One can’t make that class dance and sing without the starry night, but on a brightly lit campus viewing deep sky objects may seem impossible. Hence instructors often opt for planetarium shows. However: 1) Planetariums aren’t the real thing. 2) People living in large swaths of the United States cannot access one. Nevertheless, thanks to binoculars and small wide-field telescopes, those who teach the heavens can provide both show and substance under light-polluted skies. This article presents a dozen “pitfalls” to avoid.

Comment on “Tilting Motion and the Moment of Inertia of the Smartphone”

Pengarang : Peter F. Hinrichsen
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 223–225
Abstrak : The measurement of the moment of inertia of a smartphone using the internal MEMS gyro to record its angular velocity as it topples over from rest in a vertical position ϑ (0) ≈ 0 to a horizontal landing has been described by Kaps and Stallmach (see Fig. 1). The analysis of this experiment is presented in terms of the conservation of energy, with the implicit assumptions that the edge of the smartphone does not slip

Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 220–222
Abstrak : In the last decades spectroscopy began to play an essential role in physics education research with the recognition that atomic spectra constitute a good occasion to study the concepts of quantum mechanics. Moreover, activities in which atomic spectra are studied in order to understand star structure and evolution have proved particularly engaging for students. In this sense, the hydrogen atom spectrum is especially important in astronomy. Other researchers showed how interdisciplinary experimental activities involving interferometry and applied optics offer a good occasion to teach fundamental concepts of radiation-matter interaction.

New Measurements on the Faraday Generator and New Questions About Induction

Pengarang : Hermann Haertel
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 218–219
Abstrak : The question of how the processes around the Faraday generator with its rotating magnet should be interpreted has been controversial since its discovery by Faraday. Does the magnetic field rotate together with the rotating magnet or does it remain stationary? Furthermore, does one only need Faraday’s flux law to interpret inductive processes, or are there processes in which this law fails and a satisfactory explanation can only be found with the help of the Lorentz force? This question seemed to have been re-solved recently in favor of Faraday’s flux law, which has been described as a universal law that applies without exception to every conceivable case. The measurements presented here raise doubts as to the validity of this interpretation.

Understanding Aristotle’s Wheel Paradox from the Viewpoint of Motion Decomposition

Pengarang : Huiling Xu
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 212–214
Abstrak : Aristotle’s wheel paradox is a fascinating example of a classical puzzle that can pique a student’s interest. The existing explanations in the literature are limited to discussions of the wheel trajectory; in this paper, we study the paradox from the viewpoint of motion decomposition, an approach we consider more intuitive. The motion of the point at the wheel edge can be resolved into a uniform rectilinear motion and a uniform circular motion. By analyzing the velocity of the point on the edge of the small wheel, we conclude that when the large wheel is rolling at a constant speed without slipping, the small wheel does actually both roll and slide.

Demonstrating Mechanical Beats on Phosphorescent Foil in Real Time

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 207–210
Abstrak : The interference pattern between two harmonic oscillations with slightly different frequencies are called beats. The beats, as a combined motion, have two different periods, one approximately equal to the period of the original oscillations, and another that is significantly longer and is related to the variable amplitude of the motion. The main objective of this presented work is to engage students’ attention and demonstrate in a simple way the concept of mechanical beats as a resultant motion of combined oscillations, but also to experience it through a visual projection. The proposed experimental setup is constructed in a way that satisfies both objectives and it consists of two parts that allow us to demonstrate in real time the combination of two harmonic motions. In the first part, the resultant motion is generated by the oscillations of two parallel rulers equipped with mirrors, and in the second part the visual demonstration of the beat occurs on a phosphorescent rotating foil by using a blue violet laser beam.

Exploring Historical Scientific Instruments by Using Mobile Media Devices

Pengarang : Aurelio Agliolo Gallitto
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 202–206
Abstrak : We describe an educational activity that can be completed with mobile media devices in order to understand the working principle of a pair of tuning forks, from the Historical Collection of Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo, and how they were used to explain acoustic interference and beats with the Lissajous optical method. This approach can be used with any tuning fork and it is a valuable teaching strategy that does not require specific laboratory equipment.

Measuring the Magnetic Field Vector of Earth

Pengarang : Leonid Minkin
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 200–201
Abstrak : The magnetic field of Earth, Be, is an intriguing topic in the introductory physics curriculum that engages students’ curiosity and inspires numerous speculations about the nature of this phenomenon. There are several methods for measuring Earth’s magnetic field. Probably, the most widespread and visual method of measuring the field in student lab experiments utilizes a tangent galvanometer. Recently, PASCO scientific suggested to use a magnetic field sensor for this goal, in a procedure where a magnetic field sensor combined with a rotary motion sensor is rotated in a 2-D plane containing the magnetic field vector of Earth. In this case, the magnetic field detected by the magnetic field sensor is a component of the magnetic field vector oriented relative to the direction of the magnetic field sensor probe (radial component of magnetic field). This means that the detected magnetic field considered as a function of the angle of rotation of the sensor will be a sinusoidal function. The amplitude of this function is the magnitude of Earth’s magnetic field. In conducting this experiment, initially the sensor is set to zero by placing it in a Zero Gauss Chamber (mu-metal). The equipment setup of the experiment is depicted in the figure shown in Ref. 9. The described experiment requires the use of a dip needle that is a compass pivoted to move in the plane containing the magnetic field vector of Earth. The dip needle shows the dip angle θ (inclination) that Earth’s magnetic field makes with the horizontal. Besides the previously mentioned devices, this experiment requires the use of an aluminum table clamp, adjustable angle clamp, and angle indicator to ensure proper alignment of the rotary motion sensor in a 2D plane containing the magnetic field vector.

A Skateboarding Experiential Learning Activity for Introductory Physics

Pengarang : Liang Zeng
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Physics Teacher
Volume / Edisi : 60 (No. 3)
Halaman : 196–199
Abstrak : Instructors of introductory college physics courses are in a unique position to explain the physics of skateboarding and its associated risks. A field trip to a skate park to explore the law of conservation of energy and measure the impact forces can enhance student analytical thinking skills and their appreciation of physics in everyday life. Through the measurement of the impact forces and student discussions of their own skateboarding experiences, students are better prepared to protect themselves from skateboarding-related physical injuries.
