Accounting Faculty’s Motivation to Engage in Academic Citizenship: Evidence from Australia and New Zealand

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Issues in Accounting Education
Volume / Edisi : 40 (No. 2)
Halaman : 1-21
Abstrak : Academic citizenship, encompassing service and broader community engagement, is declining despite its pivotal role in the academic ecosystem, largely due to being underrecognized and underappreciated in university reward systems. This study identified factors that support and inhibit faculty engagement in academic citizenship so that initiatives to reverse this trend can be designed. We interviewed 24 accounting faculty from 11 universities across Australia and New Zealand. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study identified personal factors such as faculty self-efficacy, goal commitment, and self-evaluation of progress as drivers of engagement. Our findings underscore the urgent need for university management to support academic citizenship, particularly among junior faculty, and to formally recognize it in institutional workload models, performance evaluations, and reward systems, to ensure the sustainability of the academe ecosystem.

What Role Has the Concept of “In-Betweenness” Played in Explaining Turkey and Indonesia’s Foreign Policy?

Volume / Edisi : 52 (No. 4)
Halaman : 383-411
Abstrak : As global geopolitical tensions rise, more states find themselves caught between major power blocs, particularly between Western liberal democracies and authoritarian regimes. Countries like Turkey and Indonesia embody this “in-betweenness,” navigating different governance models, trade partners, and cultural identities. Since the 2000s, both nations have developed distinct patterns of in-between states: Indonesia adopts a pragmatic equidistance approach, while Turkey struggles for recognition in global governance. Domestically, Indonesia has democratized since the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998, despite oligarchic setbacks, while Turkey has shifted from EU integration to presidentialism and Islamization, marked by the 2016 coup attempt. In terms of partnerships, Turkey has distanced itself from NATO allies and abandoned EU aspirations, while Indonesia has skillfully balanced relations, especially in the South China Sea and with China’s infrastructure projects. As a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Indonesia’s foreign policy remains defined by the principle of Bebas Aktif (free and active). Amid growing global competition, understanding how “in between” states like Turkey and Indonesia maneuver through geopolitical dynamics is crucial. This article investigates how in-betweenness characterizes Turkish and Indonesian foreign policy balancing acts and how such behavior shapes relations with the EU and Japan respectively.

Rethinking Indonesia’s Defense Strategy: Aligning the Total People’s Defense (Sishankamrata) with Contemporary Defense Challenges

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Indonesian Quarterly
Volume / Edisi : 52 (No. 4)
Halaman : 357–382
Abstrak : Indonesia’s defense strategy, rooted in the Sishankamrata which stands for Sistem Pertahanan Keamanan Rakyat Semesta (Total People’s Defense), faces significant challenges in addressing contemporary security threats. This study aims to analyze Indonesia’s defense policies, particularly its acquisition strategies, and compare them with contemporary security threats surrounding Indonesia. Despite Sishankamrata’s historical success in mobilizing national resources for internal security, this article argues that its inward focus and fragmented implementation have hindered its effectiveness in dealing with regional power competition and modern warfare demands. Through the use of a qualitative approach, this article examines official defense documents, historical analyses, and case studies of military procurement from other country. Our findings reveal that Indonesia’s diversified acquisition strategy, which includes primarily the strategy to source weapons from 33 countries, has resulted in severe interoperability and logistical challenges which contributes to systemic inefficiencies in Indonesia’s defense system. The study argues that Indonesia should adopt a more cohesive defense policy, emphasizing Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) as a national defense strategy that is shared among all defense stakeholders not just exclusive for specific services. Lessons from other countries highlighted that a country’s military modernization will require not just resources, but also political will and strategic clarity. Addressing these gaps would enable Indonesia to enhance its military effectiveness and align its defense policies with contemporary security challenges.

Indonesia’s Information Governance: New Nomenclatures, Same Old Problems?

Pengarang : Rachman, Rifqi,Krisetya, Beltsazar A.
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Indonesian Quarterly
Volume / Edisi : 52 (No. 4)
Halaman : 337–356
Abstrak : Indonesia’s information governance landscape is undergoing a new transformation phase with the new nomenclature of the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komunikasi dan Digital/Komdigi). This structural shift should be able to answer the real challenges they previously faced and what lies ahead. In this regard, those challenges will be discussed through a four-way framework of digital infrastructure: data, intermediaries, content, and access. It evaluates existing policies and identifies implementation gaps that would lead to a more inclusive and effective digital ecosystem. Several challenges remain in data protection, platform governance, and content moderation. The enactment of Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law has its enforcement problem because the sub-regulation is yet to be stipulated. On the other hand, the growing influence of digital platforms demands a proper response in balancing innovation, security, and user rights. Meanwhile, content moderation policies still carry the same problem of ambiguousness with the government intervention that is always waiting at the corner. Accessibility gaps also demand a continuous effort to ensure equitable internet access nationwide. The article sees that information governance requires a more holistic approach to avoid regulatory fragmentation. Komdigi should also enhance trust from the public, ensuring an impartial law implementation. By guaranteeing transparency, accountability, and a rights-based approach, Indonesia can foster a resilient and sustainable digital environment aligned with its long-term vision, Visi Indonesia Digital 2045.

The Role of the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar (2021–2024)

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : The Indonesian Quarterly
Volume / Edisi : 52 (No. 4)
Halaman : 313-336
Abstrak : Myanmar’s political crisis since the February 2021 military coup has presented a serious challenge to ASEAN’s ability to mediate conflicts and uphold regional stability. The appointment of the ASEAN Special Envoy was envisioned as a diplomatic mechanism to facilitate dialogue and humanitarian assistance under the Five-Point Consensus (5PC). However, over the past three years (2021–2024), the role has faced significant limitations due to ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship, lack of institutional support, and the junta’s resistance to inclusive engagement. This issue matters because Myanmar’s prolonged crisis has exacerbated humanitarian suffering, regional instability, and ASEAN’s credibility as a conflict mediator. As over 6,000 civilians have been killed and 3.5 million displaced, ASEAN’s response—or lack thereof—has drawn international scrutiny. The study of the Special Envoy’s role is critical to understanding the constraints within ASEAN’s diplomatic framework and assessing how future mediation efforts can be more effective. The article argues that ASEAN’s Special Envoy mechanism has been largely symbolic rather than substantive, constrainedby the non-interference principle, inconsistent priorities across ASEAN Chairs, and the absence of a clear mandate. It highlights key challenges, including the lack of access to Myanmar’s opposition groups, reliance on humanitarian aid as a diplomatic tool, and the failure to establish a long term political roadmap for Myanmar’s future. The analysis examines the evolving approaches under Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Laos, each reflecting different levels of engagement, transparency, and effectiveness. While Indonesia’s silent diplomacy approach allowed for better crisis mapping, Laos has leaned toward a more pragmatic, neighboring-country-led initiative, signaling ASEAN’s waning influence over the situation. Key policy recommendations include: (1) establishing a permanent ASEAN Special Envoy office with a dedicated support structure to ensure continuity across chairmanships; (2) expanding the Envoy’s mandate to directly engage all relevant Myanmar stakeholders beyond the junta; (3) leveraging partnerships with external actors like the UN and neighboring countries to strengthen ASEAN’s role; and (4) developing a clear political framework beyond the 5PC to guide ASEAN’s long-term engagement with Myanmar. Without these changes, ASEAN risks diplomatic stagnation, further diminishing its ability to influence Myanmar’s trajectory and regional stability.

Hiposubjektivitas Timothy Morton: Sebuah Tawaran Filsafat Manusia di Era Antroposen

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Diskursus
Volume / Edisi : 20 (No. 2)
Halaman : 293-327
Abstrak : This article proposes a new alternative account to anthropocentric explanations of the philosophy of man through Timothy Morton’s view of ‘hyposubjectivity’. Anthropocentrism is a paradigm that privileges human beings in cosmology, epistemology, and axiology. An alternative view is important because large-scale changes are threatening and may lead to the extinction of life in the biosphere, which results in a new proposed geological time classiÞcation that shifts the Holocene epoch to the Anthropocene. Ironically, while the anthropocentric view proves its premise on human dominance over non-human conditions, this change has in fact made humans powerless in the face of the change itself. Through the concept of hyposubjectivity, Morton offers an explanation of the relationship between humans and nonhumans as a symbiotic collective that should work together through solidarity between ‘species beings’. This article wants to emphasize the meaning that human being does not constitute the totality of the universe.

Dari Sultan ke Santri: Konsep Kuasa dan Perubahan Otoritas Keagamaan dalam Masyarakat Jawa

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Diskursus
Volume / Edisi : 20 (No. 2)
Halaman : 274-292
Abstrak : Despite having been successfully “Islamized” since the XVII century, the way Islam was practiced in general during that period undeniably differs from the current. In this essay, the shift from a society that leaned stronger on the side of adat (custom) towards one that is more orthodox and orthopraxical is connected with the change of religious authority in Javanese society. This essay argues that the traditional religious authority based on the notion of Power (as defined by Benedict Anderson) declined along with the weakening of the Javanese courts during the colonial era, thus making it possible for a new Islamic religious authority based on Scripture and prophetic teaching/tradition to take over.

Ritus Pewartaan Injil dalam Misa: Komparasi Missale Romanum Pius V (1570) dan Missale Romanum Paulus VI (2008)

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Diskursus
Volume / Edisi : 20 (No. 2)
Halaman : 238-273
Abstrak : This study explores the evolution and history of the rite of proclaiming the Gospel as found in the Ordo Missae of the Missale Romanum of Pius V (1570) and the Missale Romanum of Paul VI (2008). The objective is to facilitate a deeper understanding of how this rite has been celebrated in different contexts over time. The liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council has brought changes to the rite, simplifying some elements and removing unnecessary repetitions from the old Ordo Missae. Therefore, a comparative study of these two Ordines is necessary to fully comprehend the changes that have occurred in this rite. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach, focusing on comparative and historical analysis. It concludes that understanding the current rite of proclaiming the Gospel in the Ordo Missae is best achieved through comparison with the previous rite. The new Ordo Missae was not created abruptly or in a completely new way, but was compiled based on extensive liturgical study while retaining the essentials. Although the rite is expressed in two different forms of Ordines Missae, this does not mean that the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist using “two rites,” but only with one rite, namely the Roman rite.

Hermeneutika Kesaksian dan Keterbacaan Transendensi dalam Filsafat Paul Ricœur

Pengarang : Setyadi, Fransiskus Wawan
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Diskursus
Volume / Edisi : 20 (No. 2)
Halaman : 206-237
Abstrak : Transcendence plays an important role in Paul Ricœur’s philosophical reflections. In the philosophy of the will that marks the beginning of his career, Transcendence serves to reconcile the conflictual relationship between human freedom and the inherent conditions that limit it and to offer liberation of man from his fault. The same theme persisted in his later works, in his exploration of the role of Transcendence for forgiveness in the book on memory, history and forgetting. However, Ricœur never systematically wrote this role of Transcendence in a work because the third book of the trilogy of the philosophy of the will that was meant to elaborate on the role of Transcendence was never written. This provides an opportunity for Ricœur’s commentators to interpret the presence of Transcendence in Ricœur’s philosophy. This article argues that the hermeneutics of testimony is one of the gateways to understand Transcendence in Ricœur’s philosophy.

Does Ethics Presuppose Religion? A Levinasian Perspective

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : Diskursus
Volume / Edisi : 20 (No. 2)
Halaman : 171-205
Abstrak : Levinas’s fundamental thought about ethics as the questioning of the I by the other earns him a unique position among moral philosophers who usually analyze the good-and-bad principles of a moral action. Levinas places such questioning on the idea of metaphysics as desire for the InÞnite that leads to the responsibility for the Other. With such an idea about ethics, one may ask whether Levinas’s thought is rooted in religion. This article purports to analyze the question by analyzing how Levinas understands the relationship between ethics and religion and whether his ethics is nothing but religion. Using the phenomenological method and textual analysis, the author shows that the answer to these questions is inherently complex. For Levinas, true ethics is fundamentally religious, and conversely, a true religion is fundamentally ethical. All this is manifested, among others, in the acknowledgment of the transcendence of the Other and the refusal to all forms of totalization.
