Transforming discussion in general chemistry with authentic experiences for engineering students

Abstrak: Undergraduate engineering education in the United States is in need of reform that addresses the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students. Change Chem is a curriculum reform model that has been created to address this issue for freshman students. This article reports on a mixed method efficacy study of Change Chem, which uses collaborative problem-based learning with model-eliciting activities to transform the discussion section of general chemistry so as to better retain freshman who are engineering majors.
Traveling waves in a reaction-diffusion system describing smoldering combustion

Abstrak: Combustion is a fast oxidation process and exhibits diverse behaviors according to experimental conditions. When there is no natural convection of air, such as in experiments aboard a space shuttle or in a vertically confined system, an unexpected finger-like smoldering combustion develops. In this paper, a reaction-diffusion-advection system that describes smoldering combustion is studied from the viewpoint of computer-aided analysis. In particular, we focus on the traveling wave solutions of the system, which represent the characteristic propagation of combustion. It is revealed that the existence or nonexistence of stable traveling wave solutions determines whether or not a combustion front propagates in a self-sustained way in one space dimension. In two space dimensions, we numerically suggest the existence of a traveling spot solution in which the flow rate is too low to support planar traveling wave solutions. Uji Karakteristik Fisis dan Pelepasan Diklofenak Dietil-Amonium dari Berbagai Basis Suppositoria

Abstrak: The physical characteristics and the release of dietylamonium diclofenac suppositories have been studied. The suppositories were made with 3 different bases: oleum cocoa +10% cera, Suppocire A and a mixture of PEG 400 and PEG 4000. The physical characteristic determination of the suppositories included weight variation, melting point, liquifaction time and mechanical strength. The results were compared with the standard requirements. While the release of the active ingredients were observed by determining the kinetics and amount of diethylamonium diclofenac that could diffuse from the bases in 90 minutes. The results showed that oleum cocoa + 10% cera bases is less suitable as dietylamonium diclofenac suppositories bases, suppocire A bases is suitable as dietylamonium diclofenac suppositories bases specially for local effect. PEG bases is suitable as dietylamonium diclofenac suppositories bases especially for systemic effect. Displacement factor of dietylamonium diclofenac in oleum cocoa + 10% cera is 1.84, in suppocire A bases is 0.09 and in PEG bases is 2.41
Variasi diurnal dan musiman kemunculan lapisan E-sporadis di atas Sumedang tahun 2015

Abstrak: Gesekan angin (wind shear) telah lama dipercaya sebagai mekanisme penyebab kemunculan lapisan E-Sporadis pada ketinggian 90-120 km. Kemunculan lapisan ini berkaitan dengan gelombang gravitasi, gelombang pasang-surut, serta gelombang atmosfer skala global (planetary wave) dengan perulangan yang berbeda. Hujan meteor yang terjadi setiap tahun juga dapat mempengaruhi probabilitas kemunculan lapisan E-Sporadis, sementara aktivitas Matahari dan geomagnet tidak banyak memberikan pengaruh. Pada artikel kali ini, data E-Sporadis hasil pengamatan di Balai Pengamatan Atmosfer dan Antariksa Sumedang, Jawa Barat sepanjang tahun 2015 telah dipelajari. Tujuan utamanya adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik dan pola kemunculan lapisan E-Sporadis di daerah lintang rendah. Beberapa kesimpulan dapat dideduksi dari analisis yang dilakukan. Persentase kemunculan lapisan E-Sporadis (P) cukup tinggi pada bulan Mei-Juli serta DesemberJanuari. Persentase kemunculan lapisan E-Sporadis dengan frekuensi kritis lebih dari 2 MHz dapat mencapai 97%. Variasi diurnal yang teramati adalah peningkatan nilai P menjelang tengah hari yang diikuti penurunan sekitar pukul 12:00 waktu lokal. Nilai P kembali naik dan memuncak pada pukul 16:00 waktu lokal lalu menurun seiring berkurangnya laju ionisasi oleh radiasi Matahari. Pada bulan Mei-Juli, lapisan E-Sporadis dengan frekuensi lebih dari 6 MHz juga muncul pada malam hari. Pemeriksaan lebih lanjut perlu dilakukan untuk mengetahui kaitan antara kemunculan E-Sporadis pada rentang waktu tersebut dan aktivitas hujan meteor dengan fluks tinggi. Selain itu, variasi diurnal dan musiman yang diperoleh dalam studi ini dapat menjadi rujukan bagi proses ramalan cuaca antariksa yang diperlukan bagi sejumlah stakeholder

A BILINCUAL CHILD'S ACQUISITION OF MANDARIN AND ENGLISH: SAME OR DIFFERHNT RATH?

Abstrak: This paper is descriptive in nature. It looks at the utterances of one Malaysian-Chinese bilingual child who was specifically spoken to in Mandarin and English from birth. The aim of this paper is to highlight the different speech components present in the two languages. There is some evidence to show that the child's preferred language is not necessarily the dominant language. The child was observed closely by the researcher cum mother over a period of seven months. Initial utterances were tape recorded but later discarded due to impracticality. Subsequent utterances were then spontaneously recorded into journals as and when they occurred within the child's home with details such as time, date, place and participants indicated. Transcribed orthographically, data were then categorized according to the languages heard and then the speech components (see Hoff, 2009; Foster-Cohen, 1999; Crystal, 1997) respectively. A frequency count of all these utterances suggests that 59o/o of the child's utterances were in English while 19% were in Mandarin (dominant language) with smaller percentages subscribing to the various environmental languages. Data also indicate that more nouns were used in English and but slightly more verbs and noun phrases were used in Mandarin. This phenomenon was also used as a determinant to gauge the rate of acquisition of the two languages. A very small percentage of the child's data were also articulated as complete sentences but this was done in mixed languages, which could be a typical phenomenon of bilingual language acquisition at the early stage
A conceptual guide to natural history museum visitors` understanding of evolution

Abstrak: Museum visitors are an ideal population for assessing the persistence of the conceptual barriers that make it difficult to grasp Darwinian evolutionary theory. In comparison with other members of the public, they are more likely to be interested in natural history, have higher education levels, and be exposed to the relevant content. If museum visitors do not grasp evolutionary principles, it seems unlikely that other members of the general public would do so. In the current study, 32 systematically selected visitors to three Midwest museums of natural history provided detailed open-ended explanations of biological change in seven diverse organisms. They were not told that these were evolutionary problems. Responses were coded as: informed naturalistic reasoning, featuring some understanding of key evolutionary concepts, novice naturalistic reasoning, featuring intuitive explanations that are also present in childhood, and creationist reasoning, featuring supernatural explanations. All visitors were mixed reasoners, using one or more of these patterns in different permutations across the seven organisms: 72% used a combination of informed naturalistic reasoning and novice naturalistic reasoning, while a further 28% added creationist reasoning to this mix. Correlational analyses indicated that for many visitors these reasoning patterns were coherent rather than fragmented. The theoretical model presented in this article contributes to an analysis of the developmental and cultural factors associated with these patterns. This could help educators working in diverse educational settings understand how to move visitors and students toward more informed reasoning patterns.

A Meta-Analytic Review of Social, Self-Concept, and Behavioral Outcomes or Peer-Assisted Learning

Abstrak: Meta-analysis was used to examine social, self-concept, and behavioral effects of peer-assisted learning (PAL) Interventions with elementary school students. An electronic search of PsycINFO and ERIC databases resulted in 36 relevant PAL studies. Overall, effect sizes were small to moderate across the 3 outcome variable domas. Both social and self-concept outcomes were positively correlated with academic outcomes. Specific PAL components student autonomy, Individualized evaluation, structured student roles, interdependent group rewards, and same-gender grouping-were related to effect sizes. PAL interventions were more effective for low-income versus higher income, urban versus suburban- rural, minority versus nonminority, and Grades 1-3 students versus Grades 4-6 students. Results suggest that PAL interventions that focus on academics can also improve social and self-concept outcomes.
