Abstrak : Understanding how teaching affects students' attitudes and beliefs is notoriously difficult, specifically in a quickly evolving and societally relevant field such as genetics. The aim of this survey study is to capitalize our previous research and examine how teaching relates to Finnish secondary school students’ liking of, self-concept in and experienced utility of genetics, attitude towards gene technology and belief in genetic determinism. In this unique setting, we used as explanatory variables their teachers’ teaching emphases and learning materials, and as student-related factors, we used gender and the number of biology courses attended. Item-response theory with exploratory, confirmatory, and explanatory analyses were carried out to model the data. Teaching explained students’ attitudes and beliefs: if the teacher’s emphasis was Hereditary or the textbook with stronger Mendelian emphasis was used, students tended to havemore negative attitudes towards learning genetics and stronger belief in genetic determinism . Our results also suggest gender differences: male students had more positive attitude towards gene technology, higher self-concept, whereas as utility of genetics and belief in genetic determinism were higher in females. The results suggest that teaching’ approaches as well as learning materials need updates to fulfil the needs for genetics literacy.

The effects of cooperative flipped learning on science achievement and motivation in high school students

Abstrak : In this study, we compared the effects of cooperative flipped learning (CFL) on science achievement and learning motivation with those of simple flipped learning (SFL) and traditional lecture (TL) using a mixed-methods design. Three classes containing a total of 65 first-year high school students in South Korea were randomly assigned to the CFL, SFL, and TL conditions and taught the chemistry content of an Integrated Science curriculum in 12 lessons over about 4 weeks. In our research design, we paid particular attention to controlling the overall learning time in both the pre- and in-class contexts of the three groups. Our quantitative analysis confirmed that CFL positively affected motivation, but it negatively affected achievement. SFL showed the opposite results. In qualitative analysis, video watching in FL was rated satisfactorily in most cases, but some students reported that they lacked time. CFL inherited both the pros and cons of cooperative learning with regard to in-class interaction, and the effects of SFL depended on individual students’ learning abilities. As a consequence, the balance between pre- and in-class learning should be considered carefully when implementing FL, and lab sessions are suitable candidates for this instructional system.

Students’ attitudes toward chemistry, environmental protection and information technology in a bilingual vocational secondary school in Budapest, Hungary

Abstrak : Students’ attitudes toward science are complex phenomena depending on numerous factors. The factors studied in this work are students’ interest in science, their enjoyment of science lessons and career interest in science. Our objective was to investigate the attitudes of students based on these factors. The main question was whether the students enrolled in a bilingual vocational secondary school for chemistry, environmental protection and information technology had chosen the institution and their professional field according to their personal interests and whether this interest was independent of age and gender. Surveys were conducted in two academic years (2015–2016 and 2017–2018) among students from grade 0 or 9–12. Three factors of the Test of Science-Related Attitudes (TOSRA) questionnaire and self-constructed questions were used and analysed in our research. The results for the self-composed factors of our questionnaire provided evidence to state that the choice of school and that of profession is based on personal scientific interest of students. We have found a negative relationship among TOSRA items and age; regarding gender, there are differences among chemists and IT specialists.

Exploring thinking as communicating in CSCL

Abstrak : The use of the term group cognition for referring to the discursive methods that small groups collaboratively use to accomplish cognitive tasks like solving problems often raises misunderstandings because readers apply AM when they see the noun cognition. They wonder where the acquired cognitive objects are possessed and stored, since there is no individual physical persisting agent involved. If one applies PM instead, in line with Sfard’s theory, then it makes much more sense that discursive objects are being built up within a publicly available group discourse.

Assessing quantitative modelling practices, metamodelling, and capability confidence of biology undergraduate students

Pengarang : -
Nama Majalah/Jurnal : International Journal of Science Education
Volume / Edisi : 43 (No. 10)
Halaman : 1685-1707
Abstrak : Quantitative modelling plays an important role as biology increasingly deals with big data sets, relies on modelling to understand system dynamics, makes predictions about impacts of changes, and revises our understanding of system interactions. An assessment of quantitative modelling in biology was administered to students (n = 612) in undergraduate biology courses at two universities to provide a picture of student ability in quantitative reasoning within biology and to determine how capable those students felt about this ability. A Rasch analysis was used to construct linear measures and provide validity evidence for the assessment and to examine item statistics on the same scale as student ability measures. Students overall had greater ability in quantitative literacy than in quantitative interpretation of models or modelling. There was no effect of class standing (Freshmen, Sophomore, etc.) on student performance. The assessment showed that students who participated felt confidence in their ability to quantitatively model biological phenomena, even while their performance on ability questions were low. Collectively modelling practices were correlated with students’ metamodelling knowledge and not correlated with students’ modelling capability confidence. Biology instructors who incorporate the process of modelling into their courses may see improved abilities of students to perform on quantitative modelling tasks.
